Is it worth cutting dovetails on pallet wood? I think it kind of depends how nice the wood is. But even when the wood is nice there will still be some typical pallet wood related problems to overcome!

Very nice project Keith, you might win! I reckon the "dodgy" dovetails were entirely due to using a pencil rather than knife, but let's be honest, those joints were excellent! All the best
@stevebettany8778

I can’t believe you got the dovetails as good as they were using a pencil to mark up. Sometimes the wood used dictates how perfect the end product should be and given what you were using the job was spot on.

They were ridiculously solid regarding the intial process. Very good job by him. I was more surprised that there were no gaps on the bottom of the tails, I always mark those with either a knife or a gauge, but for the dovetails themselves I use just a pencil and saw tails on the line, then i mark the pins a saw them right next to the line on the waste side, for me it works better than a knife line and I mostly get perfect fit, ocasionaly I have to clean one or two a bit with a file.

I worked in a factory for awhile after hearing friends that worked there talking about the pallets they get in from Africa Asia etc. So I started working there and the first day a pallet came in ot purple heart. By the time I left I had a nice stack of pallets from everything from purple heart to black walnut to padauk and ebony

I've just started listening to the 'workshop banter' podcast. In episode one, you mention how you don't do dovetail joinery because it took you over 6 hours to do 1 😆 Looks like you've matured away from that. Love the channel, love the podcast. Keep up the good work Keith and Matt.

Great job keith. Can't beat salvaging some free hard wood. I wouldn't worry about not being a perfectionist, it's a curse. Nothing is perfect so your never quite happy with your work and are permanently left with a slightly disappointed feeling 😢

That came out really well Keith, nice to see you indulging in a little hand tool work on the dovetails. It's interesting what you said comparing your dovetails, clearly you have become a more skillful craftsman and this shows in your more recent projects and even without practising you have produced better dovetails. You do yourself an injustice though, as in many ways you are a perfectionist, but you spread yourself over a very broad skill base and perhaps because of this you don't get the time to focus on your hand tool techniques, practice is the key of course, but hey, those dovetails came out pretty good, better than most could manage I'm sure, we're all on a journey !

I recently retired after 33 years of sharpening and repairing saws in a SYP sawmil. Ive gotten into wood working using old reclaimed wood because of price of new as well as the beauty of such wood. Your dove tails are awesome. Its not easy to cut from scratch I know. There are jigs for cutting them with a router you prob already know. I like using chisels to mortise and cut where ever necessary. The blue wood is called blue stain and typically comes from a fungus that a bark beetle infected the tree and while its not pretty nor removable , it doesnt affect the integrity of your wood. Im listening while commenting and lol , Im not a perfectionist either but enjoy the challenge of what I make. Great job , thanks for sharing and good luck.

I may be on my own here but I really liked the different colours in the wood. I know that's why a lot of old furniture was stained dark to hide it but I've developed a real taste for variations in tone and natural wood colour. Some of my own YT videos don't quite show that though so maybe I need to follow your lead on better videoing. I love the finished box!

I'm surprised you found Rubber Wood in a Pallet. Ours are usually cheap pith pine. I pick up quite a lot of Rubber Wood furniture from the verge, and re purpose/ recycle. The grain can be very temperamental and as you found out. Very thirsty. You did a good job and very nice result.

A little tip if you worry about detail like me. Instead of using wood filler: sand some of the scrap wood offcuts and mix the filings into some PVA glue, then use that like filler. This will match it to the exact colour of the wood you're using, and takes stain as if it was that material too!

First and foremost love the mix of hand tools and power tools. So many makers seem stuck on one side of that fence or the other. Beautiful box. Love the use of India ink. Great tactic using super glue to hold the top hinge in place. There is a phrase a picked up from Rob Cosman, “training the hand”. The more times we do something the easier it becomes because our hands have learned how. Personally I think your dovetails are fine and in the final product look great. Thanks for sharing this build with us.

Don't under estimate your improvement. A footballer might play midfield for years but doesn't mean they're a good goalkeeper. Same applies. A woodworker might improve loads over a vast range of skills, but doesn't mean that'll help with everything. Bloody good job from where I'm sat mate 🤘

Interesting you use the table saw rather than the router to cut the base groove. I do find using the router table is easier and accurate to drop the work onto if you’re not going right through the end. Lovely finish on the box and I might have a go at dovetails given how well yours have come out. This project is a great tutorial.

That is one nice looking box. I am by no means a wood expert, but that wood looks a lot like melina, a wood that is quite popular here (Mexico) currently and that I'm working with extensively at the moment. It's also known as white teak. It's fairly cheap (almost as cheap as pine here), but durably and nice to work with.
