Hand Cut Roof- Setting Common Rafters #shorts

2x12 rafters nailed to a 5 1/2" x 15" Glulam ridge beam. We rip ridge blocks out of our scrap with the bevel of the roof slope for sheathing nailing. This is required by our structural engineer. The notch is for air flow. We'll frame the interior walls later and then add the collar ties under the ridge.
Who doesn't love a hand cut roof?

From a purely technical point of view and being a carpenter myself..the strength of the roof comes from the triangulation of the timbers, the downward force " load" is transfered by the wall plate to the ground. Therefore the feet of the rafters are notched over over the wall plate "birdsmouth cut ", as we call it in the UK The nails are purely to maintain the position of the rafters, and do not add any structural support. As this appears not to have been done, in years to come when the nails corrode and the timbers shrinks could lead to structural failure. .

I know this comment is a year old by now, but for people just tuning in, they are using structural hangars in the lower glulam to catch the bearing. It'll be fine. 👍

@@Valixstone Hi, Your reply just randomly poped up on phone, and yes you are correct regarding the use of hangers to carry load. But at the same time and with respect if the carpenters or however posted clip, should be mindful of showing the complete methodology should it be copied. If I may also add that if one is gonna flex on you tube regarding " carpentry skills" then look no further than the Chinese builds centuries ago, which are still standing, they would have stub morticed the foot of the rafters into the load bearing beam.

What carries the load of the roof at the bottom of it is not sitting on the wall? Hangers ? So the load is now pushing against the wall instead of the wall carrying the load. I don't know where this is common l have not seen such a thing in 50 years. It is not structurally sound.
@charlesbrigman7333
@charlesbrigman7333 2 жыл бұрын
When stick building a structure if you have floor joist the walls are laid out down the wall the joist land on at the same layout then rafters fall on same layout on top of plate the load is then carried not only by the wall but the stiffest part of the wall. Roofs are heavy they need to be supported.

I don't think its "code" here either, but because the house is "irregular" and doesn't meet the prescriptive requirements of the code, it requires an analysis by a structural engineer. The top row of sheathing requires blocking for the roof diaphragm and then the blocking at the eaves. In order to get our ventilation we have just chosen to tackle it this way with the notched and beveled blocks. Often we have vaulted ceilings with insulation in the rafter bays, so this notch works the best for air flow. Sorry for the longwinded answer :-)
