This was a "thing" before embossing folders and machines. I have many brass stencils for dry embossing. I also have taken inexpensive store bought cards, and outlined florals with a ball tipped embossing tools. First I embossed from the front of the card, then flipped the card over and embossed just inside those lines to make it stand out.

To use the Bonefolder was a great idea, it goes much smoother to the paper then iron tools. Thanks a lot.

Thank you for a great tutorial. I have never thought of making my own template. To make life easier, rub the back of the paper with a tumble dryer sheet before you emboss it as it makes the tool move easier on the paper. If you are not using a light box then rest the paper on something soft like the soft side of a mouse mat. You can buy ball tools for embossing in lots of sizes, although the tip of the bone folder worked well.

Wow. I love that you made and shared this. I have a Cricut and while it will emboss/deboss, I'm a believer that your method is what crafting is truly about -far more personal and thoughtful! This will put heart into the card. Thank you very much! Subscribed.

Thanks for the fun tutorial. If you don’t have a light box, you can tape the paper to a window. Rubbing the back of the paper with wax paper helps the bone folder move smoother.

In Germany 20 years ago we exclusively embossed like this. At some point there were metal stencils with motifs. But they all had a lightbox and an embossing tool with a ball.

Now, that tutorial video is excellent. I have viewed & followed the instructions on very many embossing tutorials. I was always unsuccessful & disappointed; so I abandoned [put on hold] projects such as personalized stationery for my niece; until now, that is. I understand where, & what, I was NOT understanding previously. Thanks to your simplified tutorial explaining the purpose of each step I clearly see what I had not. So, I'll take the stationery project off the back burner & get on with it. First thing is simply my design. Thank you so so very much.

You are right. This would take way too long and honestly probably cause too much pain to your hand to do for a small business. The investment in machinery would be needed!

You can buy stencils! I have metal stencils, alphabets, numbers and little shapes like hearts, balloons, etc. I also have a 2 light boxes. They are so much fun. The mouse pad is a great idea. Anna Griffin they to or did for yhe old cuttlebug. Your can find embossing and die cutting machines for cheap. You can embossing with the rubber mat even plastic stencils, cutting dies. Long if you have a rubber mat. Discount stores like Tuesday Morning and other carry older models for low prices. Thank you for sharing you video. It brought old memories. If you go on line, you may still find older metal stencils. Oh, I use to use a rolling pen but you have to press ready hard. Good Luck! Many Blessings. From Texas.

Great idea, if you need a special piece, but I have to say when making as many cards as I do. I use a embossing machine my small machine is wonderful, as is my large one . They really don’t take up much space.. plus there hand crank.. not electric , I take it on camping trips too!

Thanks for Sharing. I think I would have more control with the ball tools for smaller items. Never thought of using the bone folder for something like that. Can you use regular stencils? I saw some time ago, having embossing folders, using a rolling pin. I tried it,not bad. But have learned now,to went paper before using the embossing folders. So I think that would work better. Just info to share. Glad to know you can do this. Thanks again.

It is not a bone folder, it is used to score not fold. Scoring is the line you make to fold. It is called a Whale Bone because they used a bone to get a good score.
