Hand Embroidery- Recreate Totoro and his Friends☂

Hello Everyone, Winnie here. I made this piece few weeks ago, but took long time for editing. It’s going to be a long video, as there are many details, I just thought someone might want to watch some parts, so I kept most of it, but in timelapse mode, as it’s just simple satin stitch.
This piece is kinda easy but still took me about 40 hrs to finish, to fill in all those colors for all the characters.

It might be a stupid question, but I've never done embroidery. How do you know in what direction do the stitches when you do the big colour parts?

Even with the same color when you change directions, the color reflects differently. That’s actually quite difficult, by experience and analyse each object.

Thanks, I use 1-2 strands, for some parts with more details used 1 strand.

May I know why did u work with a double thread in the background but changed to single

The background has less details so I could use 2 strands, but for smaller details is better with 1 strand. My work usually has few layers.

Every time she puts the needle in, the fabric sucks the needle down automatically. I cant get mine to do that. I have to constantly reach around and manually pull it through. What am I doing wrong?

I have a newbie question. I noticed you do the color before the black outlining. I have always outlined in black first, then color in. Does it matter? Is there an advantage to doing the color first? Thank you.

The advantage of doing the color first is to have a clean outline, because it’s more difficult to keep the satin stitch neat.
