enjoyed that a lot mate. The grab hook on my bullock chain ( to get the most strength for the pull) a line drawn through the eyes centre should be incident in the centre of the major bend of the hook. The backwards bend helps to admit the chain. The width of the gap formed by the hook should be a millimetre or so wider than the chain to be used. To get the line through the eye to the centre of the hook I put another bend right below the eye to line it up. The will prevent the load from turning the hook and dropping the chain. I make mine the same as you forge the eye ut the I heat and quench part of the eye and bend from right below the eye off centre about 17, 20 degrees then taper and forge the reverse tip bend for chain access. Then forge the bend bringing back the hook to line up with the line of the pull through the eye. finally sorting the gap by closing up the eye on a sample of the chain to be used. It will grab the one link but the link in the opposite orientation ie the very next link will lock under load and release when slack. LOve this method of yours. I was shown to punch a slot and drift it round. Is there any difference in the strength of the eye punching and drifting round versus drifting a slot round. Love watching your channel here in Australia cant light the forge because of the bush fire problem we are in currently.

Hey, Glen. Excellent adjustment cooling the narrow side before continuing your drift, man. Thought I was the only one who did this! Par excellence my friend!

Nice project Glen. Came out great. It's fun to take a piece of scrap and just make something out of it instead of throwing it out.

Very nice first try, Glen! The more you make, the more the hook will improve. Projects like this show the versatility of a London Pattern anvil. I like your block anvils, don't get me wrong, but a horn is really handy in this type of forging.

I like it. Nice old school look. I wouldn't drag a log out of the woods with it, but it has it purpose. I believe the next one should have a thicker eye. Well, Glen how's that for constructive criticism? I still believe you have developed a good skill set. One only has to watch a few videos of people just starting out in Blacksmithing and compare to yours/others ... it is clear the time you put in has paid off. You developed a skill set.

@@johndowe7003 I hate to agree with you John, but it does seem many people are highly sensitive "in this day and age." I don't think Glen is one of them. Glen; I think , maybe his own toughest critic. Being your own critic keeps you improving. Heck, I do it often.

@@JF-fx2qv yep, glen is a decent guy, had commented another another "blacksmith" and the stupid pretentious fuckhead was super butthurt over it and was passive aggressive about it. like dude, get over yourself youre not some master blacksmith thats known wordwide. so annoying how some people of a community are fcking autistic about human interactions. just my opinion of course lol. but yeah this guy is top notch. humble and down to earth

For sure I wouldn't trust my hook here with pulling or lifting anything important or in a heavy load bearing situation. I'm happy enough with this first go and will improve on the design (thicker eye, for sure) in subsequent tries. I appreciate the comment and realize that my skills in certain areas are "ham and egger" blacksmith level at best. Thanks.

actually if you would have put it in the vise, and put a hammer head in the loop, that would have been an easier curvature for the hook just a thought !!!..great video Glen

Hi Glen, nice project, thanks for sharing. What is this hook used for?
@gstongs
@gstongs 5 жыл бұрын
This sort of hook is typically used for heavy pulling and lifting operations - used in conjunction with a chain or maybe heavy rope. But my hook design here needs some improving before it can safely lift anything too heavy. Just mostly a decorative piece as it stands.Thanks.
