Driving long distances without music or podcasts is the closest thing you can get to real life fast travel. You remember none of it. Give your brain as little as possible to gauge the time passing and you get out of the car hours later sore as hell but no worse off.

Give me nothing to pay half-attention to and I’ll be counting cracks in the road and thinking how it might be nice to drive off the road and into a ditch to at least feel something. With a podcast on it feels like someone else is driving and I’m just having a conversation (least parasocial andy).

@@OGSumo I do think paying half attention is the goal, so different strokes for different folks ig. If we were to wager I'd say you are less of an outlier to the norm for sure, minus maybe the call to the void. My problem with podcasts is if the episode lengths are consistent you know *exactly* how long it's been on the road on those long trips, even if from moment to moment within the episode the time can blur together. Towards that end music is worse from moment to moment but at least you can lose track over the long run.
