Fun watching Maisy get milked. I’m glad the Girl Scouts enjoyed the experience!

Why do you not chill it right away? I thought you were supposed to place in ice water as soon as possible, I’ve never milked before but would like to start soon!

We have it in the fridge within 30 mintues of starting milking, most of the time. I will have to research that a little more.

You are supposed to chill it as soon as possible. The longer it sits out, the more "goaty" it starts to taste (like goat milk from the grocery store). It stays fresh longer that way!

@@RockingCHomestead Sitting the bottles of milk in a big bucket of cold water immediately is the best form of heat exchange. Commercial dairy farms run their warm milk through a heat exchanger that is fed with running cold water, which brings the temperature down very quickly. After that, it is refrigerated to 4°C. Water has a much higher mass than cold air in your fridge, therefore it will cool the milk much faster, without the cost of electricity. Adding warm milk to a fridge increases the internal temperature for some time, and can affect other food in there. It makes your fridge work much harder than it needs to. So keeping a big drum of water nearby to sit your milk bottles in, is the most efficient, economical plan. It will have cooled down again by the time you milk next.

Do female Nigerian dearf goats need to be milked? What happens if you never milk them?

If they were never milked, they would simply dry up. We had adult goats for a couple of years before we breed them and they kidded out. Once the babies are weaned, is when we start taking over and milking. When we want to stop milking for the season, we will start stepping down the number of times for day we milk, then number of time per week, etc...

Do you worry about getting hair in the milk?

Definitely! We double strain it once we bring it inside to make sure that any hair or other particulates are filtered out.
