Watch new video about hand-over-hand steering technique: • Hand-over-hand STEERIN...
In this short video I'll illustrate the only correct way of steering, it's called hand-over-hand steering technique.
Remember that steering is the most important control of the car. Not the brakes, STEERING.
start with hands in 9 and 3 position, thumbs in
turn right until your arms are crossed
at that point move the bottom hand to the top of the wheel (12 o'clock)
keep turning, when your right reaches 3 o'clock, put left hand also to the top of the wheel (12 o'clock) and continue
to turn back the other way, repeat the same procedure, just turning left
You are probably watching this video because you are about to take one of our Race Lab Academy courses.
You are probably watching this video because you are about to take one of our Race Lab Academy courses.
If so, here's what I'd like you to practice before the course starts.
take your coat off
get in your street car, go to an empty parking lot
put the car in drive or first gear and let it coast. The car will move at about 5 km/h
start from the initial position (9 and 3), go full lock right, then full lock left
again full lock right and full lock left
then straighten the wheel
Do this again but starting from the left, like this
Do it 4 times until you straighten again
Go again starting from a different direction
I want you to train you muscle memory so that these moves are natural and you don't have to think about them at all.
And you must be able to do this fast.
Do this for 5 minutes on the parking lot, take a break, go for another 5 minutes.
If you are not comfortable after 2 sessions, go again.
After you can do this comfortably and quickly on the parking lot, start practicing it on the roads in your daily driving.
Practice it as much as possible between now and the start of your Race Lab Academy course. It will make a huge difference.
If you are not taking our course, please still get good at this. I promise that one day this will come in very handy and being good at this will make you a much better driver overall.
This technique is used in racing and rallying, but it is just as important for anyone who drives regular cars, at regular speeds, every day.
I personally know 2 people who have suffered long-lasting injuries in accidents on a very straight highways, because they couldn't correct their cars quickly enough when they started sliding.

I was taught by someone (maybe drivers' ed?) that if you grab the wheel at between 4 and 5 with your right hand, you can make any left turn on any track without having to cross over. Vice versa for right turns. I tried it, it works great even for sharp turns on city streets. Tankslappers are another story :) Another neat thing I learned...if you start at 9 and 3, quickly turn 180 to the left then 180 to the right and back to centre (without letting go with either hand) you can do an extremely fast emergency lane change at highway speed without losing control. I haven't tried it but my brother-in-law did in his E30 and it worked a treat. Apparently part of police training in Michigan or something. Also, I thought thumbs should never be in while racing? Good way to break them in a crash.

Effective technique, if it is executed in the correct way. If not, it would be pretty risky if you were unfamiliar/ not very good at driving. I personally prefer hands at 9 and 3, and just keep them there while steering. Crossed arms. It’s the way I’m most comfortable.

We have analyzed a lot of accidents, and we haven't found real cases where using this technique made it worse with airbag deployment. From what we found, your hands will be sent outwards, not into your face. Additionally, car control and safe driving revolve around driving --- not around preparation for a crash, but on avoiding a crash. Driving should be based on the best and fastest responses to maintain control of a car thus avoiding a crash. It's like wearing eyeglasses. If you have a crash with airbag deployment, they will damage your face. But it would be a very weak argument to say you should not wear glasses in case your eyesight needs correction. Believe me, you can turn the wheel every bit as fast as that, if not faster, with the push-pull method. I don't know where this guy gets the idea that this is the only way to steer a car; I can only imagine it's how he is used to doing it, not actual data or measurement. That's fair enough, but I take claims like this with a pinch of salt.

@@MSM4U2POM Hand over hand definitely allows for quicker steering than push pull. Especially for right or tight turns when the vehicle needs to be steered in one direction quickly. But I’m definitely more comfortable with push pull steering as that is what I’ve been doing since I started practicing. I did my first lesson in NY yesterday and my instructor taught me hand over hand
@MSM4U2POM
@MSM4U2POM 4 жыл бұрын
@@lefthanded5473 I have to disagree, my friend. My own experience is that push-pull is slightly faster at everything. When I was an instructor I was able to conduct some tests on Vauxhall driving simulators that gave a very slight edge to push-pull for most of the drivers who were kind enough to volunteer. Not that it really matters, because both are perfectly adequate for everyday driving. There are very, very few situations where you need to turn the wheel this rapidly, and if you can't keep the vehicle on course, then 99 per cent of the time it's because you're going too fast - not because there is something intrinsically wrong with the chosen steering method. Get the speed right, and everything else is easy. Hope that helps.

You should never have to correct so much that you have to turn the wheel a whole rotation. if you do, then youve probably already really fucked up. But in that case, sure hand over hand is the only way. But if youre taking a big corner, crossing is the best method because you always have two hands on the wheel
@RaceLab
@RaceLab 5 жыл бұрын
Even if we don't talk about correcting the slide / drift, in all forms of driving except track and oval racing, you need to turn the wheel more than 180 degrees at times. That's where hand-over-hand comes it. When you need to turn less - of course just keep hands on 9 and 3 o'clock.

In terms of road driving that is the worst technique (1) from a safety point of view it leaves driver vulnerable to serious injury from an airbag deployment (2) it causes a twist in the spine (as opposed to symmetrical steering) and (3) generally causes a lean in the direction of the turn, putting the eyes out of alignment with the rear view mirror. You have fallen into the common trap of assuming what is good for the track is equally good for the road.
@RaceLab

Car control and safe driving revolves around driving should not be done to prepare for a crash but to avoid it. Driving should be based on best and fastest responses to maintain control of a car thus avoiding a crash. It's like wearing eyeglasses. If you have a crash with airbag deployment, they will damage your face. But it would be a very weak argument to say you should not wear glasses in case you have a crash though it helps you to drive safer against bright sun. So best practices would more likely result in best outcome but should a crash be inevitable you simply move your hands to the side. Hand-over-hand technique limits accidental loss of the steering wheel control that help you to avoid crash and this is the most important point! We believe that advanced driving is first of all about to prevent and only if it’s impossible how to minimize the crash!

@@RaceLab I am afraid you have just confirmed what I originally said. Good road (i.e. safe) driving involves observation and planning (i.e with antisipation) so that you do not get to crash avoidance situations. This mentality seems typical of USA type approach to road driving and also, quite understandably, coming from track drivers. I was talking with an advanced road driving instructor in the UK who mentioned emergency evasion techniques which he teaches. i said if they were that bad I would not even want to be there.

The EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) I've taken teach shuffle steer using caster effect, with hands at 8 and 4. Not trying to argue, just trying to understand why you are doing so much work on that wheel, when it's really not needed for performance driving.

Your actually not supposed to drive this way. At least not in America. Have are always supposed to both be in the wheel at all times and you are supposed to use the push pull method. Removing your hands and crossing your arms will fail your test here. Less control if you only have one hand on the wheel as well as if theres an airbag you are going to be in trouble if it goes off when you do this. Maybe for fast racing this is good, but for regular driving and airbags no...
@RaceLab
@RaceLab 5 жыл бұрын
Dear Dawn, we would like to take exception to your comments on two levels. First premise-nowhere in the Highway Laws of the United States does it regulate how many hands must be on the steering wheel and in what position. It is recommended to have two hands in use, but it is understood that one hand will need to be removed when changing gears, adjusting car controls, when parallel parking or backing up. (The DMV actually compels you to use one handed steering when reversing due to the fact that you are not to rely on your mirrors - rather you need to twist in your seat and look out the back window. You cannot steer with two hands in this position.) And to be accurate, any time you re-position your hands on the steering wheel, whether hand over hand, or hand to hand shuffle, one hand will be momentarily off the wheel Second premise-hand over hand steering is not illegal in any of the United States of America or any of the Provinces in Canada. In fact, for many years it was taught as the best, most efficient and smoothest way to negotiate a turn. It was only with the advent of airbags that experts began debating whether hand over hand or hand to hand (shuffle) steering is ‘better’. In the absence of airbags, hand over hand has the following advantages. --- It gives a faster response, so the driver is more likely to be able to counter-steer and stay ahead of a skid and avoid fishtailing or spinning. The sooner a driver can respond, the smaller the corrective input required. --- It allows your thumb to stay in light contact with the crossbar of the steering wheel, a necessary reference point for regaining straight, essential in slide recovery. --- It makes for a smoother turn, and makes best use of weight transfer, since the turn is continuous, rather a series of disjointed quarter turns with a hand shuffle in between. This is particularly important in low grip situations, like glare ice or loose gravel. Hand to hand shuffle involves pushing the steering wheel in the direction of the turn with one hand up to the 12 o’clock position where the other hand takes over and pulls the steering wheel downwards while the first hand circles around to start to push up again. --- At the moment of switching control from one hand to the other, note that BOTH hands are positioned for a time at 12 o’clock-the very feature it is supposed to avoid. --- During the turning process, while both hands may be touching the wheel, only one is actually in control. So not preferable to hand over hand steering either. --- Shuffle steering involves a series of broken arcs, turning is momentarily halted when one hand takes over from the other at 12 o’clock. This allows small weight transfer release, which in extremely low grip circumstances can compromise what little grip is available. In the presence of airbags, there is an element of risk in that at the moment of impact causing airbag deployment, the driver’s hands may be caught high on the steering wheel. However, there is the same element of risk in the classic hand to hand shuffle method. If you do hand-over-hand properly (this comes with muscle memory, so only after practicing it quite a few times, while steering quickly) your arms are virtually never crossed, so if the airbag was to go off, it would be the same as with shuffle steering. To avoid that risk, a third steering method has been suggested, which we will call Tiny Shuffles. Here, the steering wheel is pushed a couple of inches around, at which point the other hand takes over. The hands would need to be re-positioned 3 to 4 times just to turn the steering wheel 90 degrees. While the hands are less likely to be a danger over to the side of the steering wheel, this steering method is clumsy, slow, imprecise and will not allow rapid, precise recovery. Since the goal of Race Lab is to encourage Precision Driving, we cannot encourage a less effective steering technique. We believe that the best driving involves avoiding crashes rather than preparing for a worst-case scenario, IF by doing that we hamper our ability to avoid an incident entirely. Another point to consider is that under ‘normal’ non-challenging, non-threatening conditions, all of these steering styles will work. Your car will turn and corrections mid-turn will not severely compromise your safety. However, it is the point where things suddenly go wrong-the unexpected happens, the road surface changes, a deer or moose runs into your path, the driver beside you suffers a sudden serious medical emergency-at these times, your safety will hinge on being able to act quickly and very precisely, calling for the best techniques. Why not make them second nature by using them consistently in all your driving?
