Fred Harwin is an ocularist, and the Director for the Center for Ocular Prosthetics in Portland. A former medical illustrator, Harwin currently creates highly detailed artificial eyes. A process that combines tremendous artistic talent and deep anatomical knowledge, these prosthetics are tiny works of art that can change lives.

What an inspiration! I have been an artist since a young child, trained in special effects makeup, trained and worked as a dental ceramist for 15 years and I've just started studying to become a maxillofacial prosthetist. Its my absolute dream and I start eyes next week... I can't wait! Thankyou for reminding me, whilst the academics is so very challenging, the passion is the power! :D

Thank you so much for doing this work. My 1-year old granddaughter had an eye removed due to cancer. Yesterday, 3 months later she received her artificial eye. Now when she smiles, both eyes shine!
