Hello Friends!!! I am getting a lot of questions about the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. So I am making a pinned comment to hopefully address any future questions! 1. I use the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic as a top coat, because the Crafter pick Glue still stays a bit tacky after drying. If the glue you are using to seal the bark down isn't like this, then you don't have to worry about a top coat. 2. Some people are having trouble finding Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, so a good alternative is to use any of the other Mod Podge sealing products. They come in a variety of finishes from gloss to matte. So if you can't find the Dimensional Magic or don't like the gloss then feel free to switch out the sealant. Hope this helps! Saena

Thank you for explaining how to prep these to make them long-lasting. After all the work that goes into painting ornaments, we don't want them to fade, chip, break over time.

This is a great video! I am making my own ornaments with paintings of my pets on them, but on the back of my wood round, I wanted to handwrite my pet's names with the wood grain still showing. Do you have any suggestions of a good pen brand that would work for this? I have tried a fine tip sharpie over the gac 100 but I am unsure of any long-term effects or if it will bleed over time. If I use some kind of pen to write and still want the wood to show through, do I need to use a clear gesso or can I write on top of the gac 100? Thank you for any advice!
@SaenaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can directly paint on the GAC 100! I just like adding gesso because it has a bit more tooth, and provides better adhesion for my painting style. Winsor and Newton has a clear gesso! Sharpies should be fine to use on top of the GAC 100. Sharpies are oil based and you can use oil based products on top of water based products, but not the other way around. There are also Posca Paint pens, I have never used them but a lot artists on KZbin love them. You should be able to find them at your local art or craft store! You can also use a fluid acrylic paint, that is what I use when I write on my ornaments. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching !

@@SaenaFineArt thank you!! I may use sharpie oil based markers. If I do, is it ok to put an acrylic varnish over it, or would I need a different kind of varnish? I was also wondering about the crafters pick glue for the bark. Do you know if using a mod podge sealer/glue by itself on the bark instead of the crafters pick glue will work just as good? Thank you!

Thank you for the wonderful video. I have two questions. I primed my first batch of wooden ornaments with gesso and it made them kind of rough. Did that also happen when you used the GAC100? Is there a reason you use both GAC100 and Gesso?

Thank you so much for this video! You are the only person I have found that talks about treating the bark. I've been searching for ages for this type of video. Would any glue work as well? Would clear pva glue work?

This is so great! Question will these steps help prevent cracking? I made some ornaments this year and took them to a local vendor event and 7 cracked 😞 I spent quite a bit of time on them so I wondered what I did wrong… I would feel terrible if one of my slices would crack after someone has just bought it. Also I want to paint a big wood-slice for my dad for Christmas would you prep it the same way? Best brands of ornament slices you have bought? Best brand of the big slices if you have bought any before? Thank you in advance!
@johnniemcinnis418 Жыл бұрын
I had a bunch of wood slices to crack after painting them. I looked up a recipe to make in order to totally dry out the wood so it wouldn't crack. It includes corn starch and salt. I have now treated mine and haven't painted yet. Will see what happens. It is disturbing to have them crack AFTER all the work to paint them. I had used the GAC 100 sealer before and that still didn't keep them from cracking.

you don't use acrylic varnish to seal the drawing on top? or fixing spray? For all the work you put in priming and prepping missing on the varnishing part in this video is a shame which I am sure you do though. I discovered your video through the KZbin search for acrylic painting on wood so I thought the video was going to be a complete walkthrough.

I do varnish after an ornament is done ^-^. I just didn't included it in this video since it was about prepping the wood. I have a video on how I varnish though!

Thank you so much for the informative video!! I’m gonna watch this as a guide once I get my supplies to start! I had a few questions if you don’t mind: 1. Would you still glue down the edges of the wood if you shaved off the bark? 2. I’ve never used Mod Podge before, would regular Mod Podge work in place of the Dimensional Magic you used to put on top of the glue? (Edit: just saw this one was answered nvm!)
@SaenaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
I still glue down the edges on the shaved wood, just to be on the safe side! You can also use the GAC 100 on the shaved wood if you like as well. Thank you for watching!!!

Hi Saena, how do you seal them? I have recently varnished with liquitex varnish and it was a disaster…the painting smushed all over the place….thank you
@johnniemcinnis418 Жыл бұрын
If you varnish too soon, they will smudge--at least mine do with oil paints. It takes a few months to totally dry with oils.

Can Mod Podge be used in place of the other sealants?
@Jorbuv3 жыл бұрын
The music is similar to Jurassic Park.
@SaenaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
Mod Podge states that it can be used a sealant, but I have never used it for that purpose. I would experiment with some scrape wood first before using it on a final piece.
@SaenaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
Lol it does a bit huh? I am not mad about it though. The score for Jurassic Park is one of my all time favorites.

Do your ornaments split over time?
@SaenaFineArt3 жыл бұрын
They do not! As long as they are sealed properly you shouldn't have any problem. Choosing wood in good condition is important as well. I have several ornaments about 5 years old and they a still in great condition.
@johnniemcinnis418 Жыл бұрын
@@SaenaFineArt Mine were sealed properly and several still split after I painted them. I had to find a recipe for a mixture to put on my wood first.
