Good to see how you can use the edges of the box to register the bottom surface of the plane. I imagine this would force the plane to stay coplanar to the desired surface plane and skip past any low spots on the way there. Also always good to have a visual reference for the grain direction, was it by luck or design that the grain took you round in circles?

If the sides of the box are all taken from the same board its easy to ensure the grain follows a circle. If from different boards, you have to ensure the grain follows the direction you want to go. You cant do this with grain in different directions, so theres no luck in it.

The visual reference I've done for years now, but only over the last couple of years put it onto card, oaper etc. It takes the thinking out of it. I would be in the zone, on my own and just remember which way was the right way. Now I do this for myself (sometimes) so that I can walk away if needed and not start thinking through it all over again. The grain direction can work out well like this. But you only have to turn one piece round and you lose it. You'd have to ask Adam if it was luck or design. 😉

When I plane to a line on the edge of a board, I make a chamfer first from the side that matches the line (don't really matter where it ends up at the edge). Then when you plane from the top, all you have to do is to make the chamfer disappear and you know you are done. :-) It spares you a lot of looking at the line from the side as the chamfer is clearly visible from above. If you are old and have weak eyes like me, you can enhance it by rubbing a pencil on the chamfer

That's a great method we use on pieces (at the right time) too. The angle elongates the path to the line; so you can easily see it from above. It's a great tip.

That is a good point to raise. I note the you glued the bottom to the side of the box. Could you discuss wood expansion.

We can. The wood is from a chest of drawers from around 1020s. It's very stable Pine or Spruce. The thickness of the base is about 6mm. There was some cupping. So we positioned the base board to be concave uppermost. That way the two long outer edges were fixed almost under no pressure (they were clamped). But the short ends had the hollow. This way the dovetailed frame would hold the board flat. Over time ( if) it moves; the bottom would rock on a flat surface. This could easily be planed flat. We're here in the UK, we don't get the extremes of moisture and dry like some parts of the World. The box will have a few coats to seal. That will slow down any movement as the wood won't be able to breathe and suck in the moisture. I'll do a follow up of what you've mentioned, because it is a very good point. @@twcmaker That's interesting info. There are heaps of hobby wood workers who build boxes and similar. I think your thoughts on how you worked with this issue would be quite useful .

Where in the World are you? Because while KZbin can be watched from anywhere, it doesn't mean it would suit your climate.
