I built this handsanding machine a while ago and didn't have space at the time to have it on a dedicated stand. Now I have room, and I need it for some knife projects. Really nice to be able to take some of the suck out of hand sanding.

ive always loved the idea of making a "sit down" shop where most of stations can be used with a stool or chair

That would be cool. Especially for stuff like knives where they’re smaller projects and often require a decent amount of time at a single machine. Interstate idea there….👍

That's a neat machine and the stand will be handy rather than taking it off a shelf every time you need it 👍

Awesome build! If it’s a nice day out. Easy enough to take sanding outside with the mobility of the setup! Love the video!

I think the standing arm could also be replaced with a guiding tube, like in a piston, that stabilizes the movement. Also a heavy duty arm to hold the sandpaper might make it even easier. Some nice handles and a little mechanism to roll the sandpaper and youll never hate handsanding again. Super interesting idea.

Yeah I think you think a lot without actually doing. Go ahead and build what is in your mind and let me know. Until then; you’re just a keyboard cowboy. I sure hope you become less useless than that someday 👍

First time I seen one of these in a video, and obviously he wasn’t the first either, was Ukrainian bladesmith Shurap. Great concept!

Use a scotch yoke crank the next build. You can set the stroke to suit the blade length and eliminate co planar movement. Stitch welding is alot more practical then Home gamers realise. The big benefit is crack failure resistance. you can have one stitch crack through and the others remain intact. Cracking through welds is most dominant in cyclical loading like vibrating "unbalances grinders" or off road vehicles with home made parts. Stitch welding is easier for many home gamers as heat soak and cold starts can be overcome with one current setting.

Great input. Never though about the weld cracking but it makes a lot of sense the way you explain it. I’ll have to look into a scotch yoke. I’ve never heard of that before. Cheers👍

Excellent job, hand sanding should go a little faster with that piece of machinery. Princess Auto is my favorite place to shop and their staff are always so helpful. I like your chair. I'm always standing. That is something I don't have in my shop, a chair. I'm always sitting on a box or a plastic tool case.

I think if you replace this short lever with a spring it might reduce this up and down force a little. I've seen the video from the build of this machine- It's very clever and thank you for sharing the idea👊. Nice work! Regards, David

i would suggest making a wider clamp jaw. that way you can have the knife edge on the surface and less chance of cutting yourself that way

The Shurap machine of handsanding, that‘s where I saw this first. I would make the handrests larger, if I would build one for myself. Which I won’t - not enough space in my shop.

Looks amazing and inspiring! Noob question: If you have a belt sander, why do you need hand sanding ? And not moving from belt to stones? How high do you sand in that machine before moving to the stones?

My family has had a machine and sharpening shop since the 1950's and we have rarely seen or done any hand sanding. We have a variety of grinders, sanding machines, and buffers that do that in a fraction of the time and with great results. If it were allowed, I would make a video of the processes and machines. (Company policy of no photos or videos of anything within the walls of the business.)

I am curious if anyone has ever used one of the harbor freight surface prep tools to replace hand sanding. It should work in theory.

Looks like your engineering is better than Shurap's, but I do like his side rails, which I believe he uses to get the bevels sanded at the correct angles. Nice!

this looks awesome. I'm part way through building my own just like this. I bought low RPM/High torque gear motor that runs on DC, but I haven't figured out what I can use as a slide table yet. So thank you for showing this. I'm going to give that thing a try. Yours is also running about as fast as mine will. Do you find it useful? I hand sand at about 4 strokes a second. These are running about half that. I'd like to get that up to 8 safely, or at LEAST 4, so it's the same speed i'm used to working at. As in, if it ends up taking twice the time, I'm not sure it's even worth using.
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I think it’s worth it for sure. It actually allows me to have great control when coming into the plunge line and stuff because I can focus on putting the sand paper exactly where I want it while the machine does the work. I really enjoy having this tool. I just used drawer slides for my slide and it’s working really well. 👍
