Wow, talk about night and day difference on the screwdriver. It now looks terrific. Well done. Oxalic acid is a very mild acid. Sold in most hardware stores as "Wood bleach". In my local hardware store it is with the other wood finishes. It can lighten the wood, but as you observed, it does not have a big effect. I also use this to remove rust for large items where it would be too expensive to use Evapo-rust. I was expecting the sparkled handle pokey things to be a future project with Mag Daughter. It cleaned up very well. Dave.

Incredible cleanup and restoration. On a side not when you can’t find a maker’s mark, after restoring, the tool actually becomes a “357 Magdad” original. Perhaps you should “brand” it as such so when another generation (100 years from now) is restoring it once again, they can say, I’ve discovered an original 357 Magdad screwdriver. Pass it on bro…

Okay, you've got a new fan. Love you're laid back delivery. BTW-I commented a while back on your restoration of a 1/2 inch ratchet from back in the 70's. I mentioned that I had one exactly like it that had quit working for me. I took it apart and cleaned it up. Of course, the one part that you warned us not to lose I lost. The little ball bearing that holds the direction selector. Fortunately, we have a great Ace Hardware store here that has a good selection of various ball beatings, so I easily found a replacement. Bottom line, my ratchet handle now works like new. Thanks for the encouragement.

I noticed you were using the WEN sander. Lately they have become my go-to brand for super cheap tools, they seem to be consistently one grade above complete crap. May I ask what your impressions have been? I have not used the 1x42 sander, I have their slow speed grinder and power planer and a belt sander. I have found the design of all of them seems to be set up for the end user to add a few nuts here and there to make the product significantly more rigid. More relevantly, every other Chinese brand I have had to get in the habit of taking it apart, cleaning, and replacing the grease before use. WEN has been surprisingly clean and designed to be easily strengthened.

One good trick to still be able to turn it on the drill press despite the widened head is to take a dowel, drill a hole the shank will fit tightly in and split it down the middle. You can chuck on that for a tight grip. If you're in a little bit more of a hurry, wrapping electrical tape, or better yet, a cut soda can around the shank, you can get the diameter thicker than the tip pretty easily. So much easier to polish on a lathe or drill press

I reckon it was a paint stirrer used over many years. Each time they would turn it upside down and use the other side which is why the ferrule has the most paint. Because it was always getting wet no matter which side up they used. Just thinking.

That's a great trick with the heat shrink. I bet that would really extend the life on a needle scraper. Now that I think about it, if there was a simple way to tool dip wire wheels, particularly everything except the outer half inch, I think they would last quite a bit longer and we would have less needles in our chest

I collect tap and die sets, particularly color case hardened sets. The boxes are always in rough shape and covered in greasy thumb prints. For years, oxalic acid has been my go-to product. It's very inexpensive, and it seems to work as a degreaser as well as a wood bleach. One tip I wanted to offer, I have found that a small amount goes quite a long ways when UV light is used. I typically drench the box and then wrap in Saran wrap and put it in the sun. You have to check it every hour or two, bubbles form and you will need to rewrap the saran wrap to even it out. In general, on a 75-year-old box that has been in a machine shop that whole time, two treatments with the sun have been plenty to bring it up to restoration quality
@jpsimon206
@jpsimon206 2 жыл бұрын
For what it is worth, I have never neutralized the acid. It seems to seep in about 3/16 of an inch max and then peters out. It does not make the wood brittle and stringy. Some would get a little thinner in the cambric layers, but a later of oil seems to flatten it right out. I think the UV is the main factor in its effectiveness. I think you should give it another try, I have used it for years to great effect. Also, for what it is worth, it is quite mild. I wash my hands afterwards, but I don't feel the need to wear gloves

I've been watching your channel for a while and I've always enjoyed it. I might be wrong but in this video it seems like you are doing the commentary live as opposed to in other ones it has felt more like a voice over. For what it's worth I think this approach is even better. I'm guessing the screwdriver belonged to a painter and was used to pry open a thousand paint cans and stir 100. It came out fantastic!

That’s incredible Magdad! I bet the discerning diligent duchess would definitely decide to add that wooden handled screwdriver to her sparkle handled tool collection. 😃👍🏼

That screwdriver is incredible, Magdad! It is a work of art. It belongs in the Smithsonian...or on your pegboard! I loved the pokey thing too. Great research on that.

Very timely video for me. I just found several old wooden handle screw drivers, cleaned them up and restored them. One was painted black like yours but the shaft ran all the way through the handle. Like yours there was no name and I could not get the black staining completely out of the wood around the Ferrell. I am going to get the stain remover to try on future projects. In this case the black stains actually turned into highlights when I stained it gunstock. Wish I could send you a picture, they turned out great.

Nice job. I've been selling paint for 35 years. That screwdriver looked like paint paddles we keep under the counter. They've been in hundreds of gallons of paint. Keep up the good work !!
