Addendum for Paladins: Divine Sense (Paladin 1) This will allow you to sense the nearby presence of any nasties, be they celestials, fiends, or undead within 60 feet. You can use this a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier. Recharges after a long rest. Lay on Hands (Paladin 1) You start with 5 healing points and can use them how you wish, be it giving just 1 point to wake up an unconscious being or 5 points at once to cleanse someone of a poison or disease, but multiple diseases or poisons will require multiple uses of 5 points. Your healing pool maximum will go up by 5 each time you take a paladin level. Recharges after a long rest. Fighting Style (Paladin 2) You get to choose between four: * Dueling for added damage when fighting one-handed. * Defense for +1 to AC when wearing armor. * Great Weapon Fighting for a chance to reroll low damage with two-handed weapons. * Protection to impose disadvantage against a target trying to attack anyone within 5 feet of you, IF you're wielding a shield. Spellcasting (Paladin 2) You can prepare a number of spells each day much like a cleric, the only difference is that the number is determined by your Charisma modifier plus half your paladin levels rounded down. You gain 2nd-level slots at 5th-level, and then 3rd at 9, 4th at 13, and 5th at 17. Divine Smite (Paladin 2) Costs no action to use, and you can choose to apply when you hit so you don't waste a slot if you miss. The amount of radiant damage depends on the slot level you expended. 2d8 for a 1st-level slot, increases by 1d8 for each higher slot for a cap of 5d8. 1d8 is added immediately to all attacks at level 11. Divine Health (Paladin 3) You become immune to disease. Sacred Oaths (Paladin 3) Your choice of an oath grants you a single use of Channel Divinity and Oath Spells that don't go against your spell total, all of which are thematically appropriate for each oath. And one more perk as early as level 6: Oath of Protection Provided you are conscious, you and any allies within 10 feet of you gain a bonus to saving throws equal to your Charisma modifier. The range expands to 30 feet at level 18.

With the Hexblade Warlock, I've seen so many Paladins just multi-class into that with the minimum STR requirement of Paladin to get out of it of 13. So they just focus instead on a bit more DEX to be +2 for medium armors, and just more or less go all in on Charisma due to the Hex Warrior benefit of the Hexblade. Seen most just take a 2 dip into Warlock since then those are 2 first level spell slots that recharge on a short rest, they might go 3 just to go Pact of the Blade to always have a magic weapon in the future. But that's the extent I've seen typically then they just go all in on Paladin again.

The only classes you could play if your stats were too bad were the core four, fighter, cleric, thief, and magic-user (which is what they were called in 1st edition), because you only needed something like a 9 or 10 in their primary stat.

I have an Oath of Devotion Paladin (tenets: honesty, courage, compassion, honour, duty) who is a devotee of Eldath (peace) and took the Folk Hero background pretty much for this exact reason. She's a girl from a town that was sacked by a warlord; when someone from the town militia was killed right in front of her, she felt compelled to pick up their sword and fight, thinking this was a little nudge in the right direction by her goddess. The flavour text with the "compassion" tenet of Devotion says, "Aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them." The "Rustic Hospitality" feature of the Folk Hero background notes, "Since you come from the ranks of the common folk, you fit in among them with ease." The common folk will shelter a Folk Hero who doesn't show they're a danger to them, but will not risk their own lives... for a Paladin of Devotion, I feel like this can also be swung around to the fact that they will also protect the common folk, from the smallest hamlet to the biggest metropolis. The other option, of course--as someone else mentioned--is just to take the Oath of the Crown. (She's also an aasimar foundling, raised by humans who own a bakery; I chose chef's tools for her tool proficiency from the Folk Hero background. When she uses magic, the area directly around her tends to smell like spices like cinnamon or cloves, or smell like fresh bread or cookies, etc.)

Nothing like dropping a literal handful of d8's and d6's on some boss that just won't die.

The raven shirt really completes this.

Looking at this again and if Fjord does go the Paladin route, he will have two 5th level spell slots to smack people with Divine Smite. And that's normally a 17th level thing for Paladins as they unlock 5th level spells then. Add on the fact said slots CHARGE ON A SHORT REST and Fjord will be bringing the Divine PAIN on enemies.

Oath of the Conqueror. Because it's not enough to just beat evil, you must break it so that it never rises again. A broken blade ends the battle today. A broken will ends the battle for days to come.

I had a Dwarf paladin (with gitantism so he was a normal height) who spoke only in the third person and did everything for and in the name of Jesus. Good times.

My Paladin includes the following: High strength. High charisma. An intelligence of 8. Chaotic good. Follower of the God of death. Sold his soul to continue living so he could continue serving his God. Outbreaker, but doesn't knows it. Going to multiclass into warlock. The closest thing the party has to a healer.

Oath of conquest here. Riding out to bring order to the chaos, and if people don't like my brand of justice, well sucks to be them.
