The first production of Handel’s Rinaldo was, by all accounts, spectacular. David Alden’s production for the Bavarian State Opera, designed by Paul Steinberg and Buki Schiff, took up the gauntlet thrown down by Handel with the razzle-dazzle of his London première and succeeded magnificently in inventing a similarly explosive Rinaldo. A superb cast features countertenors David Daniels and David Walker, and soprano Noëmi Nadelmann. Harry Bicket leads from the harpsichord and conjures his own miracles from the pit.

The set spent too much on the statue and animatronic hydra for gimmicks that would only last a few seconds. Plus the neon-lined 'waterslide' and the rotating walls of the set. Did it work to enhance the music? No. It rather created a distracting and irrelevant scene.

I really enjoyed the sets and effects. I'm new to opera and I found it made the whole thing very accessible. I went on to further research the opera and the performers. Maybe for a seasoned opera buff it seemed a bit tacky, but I was thoroughly entertained, visually, aurally and intellectually. Loved every bit of it.

@@martinemusumeci1588Some people just need minor details to completely degrade the whole thing. This show was great as-is. Who cares about too much detail in a prop... Just enjoy yourself for g's sake.

Если можно было испортить творение великого Генделя,то только такой пошлейшей постановкой!Самые хитовые арии теряют свою прелесть в подобном фарсе.В зале периодически звучит смех,как в комедии,вообще,впечатление ,что идёт какая-то "мыльная" опера.Жаль исполнителей...

Поддерживаю, комментарий! Опера должна оставаться Оперой! А для верующих христиан статуи разбросанных образов,это углубление над чувствами,самыми сокровенными! Жаль,что такие прекрасные певцы соглашаются петь в таких сценариях!
