I believe these ones with the music have a seperate chip solely for that function. Crude PC speaker-esqe music still takes up a decent amount of storage and CPU cycles, so it makes some sense to do it this way.

In Israel, when people say "Tetris", they usually talk about this. Nintendo didn't even sell products officially here all the way up to the Switch (though of course, there was a surge of original Game Boys during the Pokemon craze of the early 2000s). To this day, when people refer to 90s gaming here, they will often talk about the "Megason" (a famiclone, possibly from Thailand or China), and these "Tetris" machines. (Sega, on the other hand, sold official Mega Drives and Game Gears like hell!)
