Wonderful suggestions for composition and the shoulder pad suggestion is great. For those who are wondering it appears to be a Alan Gordon camera comfort cushion.

Once your shooting handheld you become part of the camera so you need to move carefully and slowly when necessary. Great tips

Love that "In Bruges" example. Using an actor, blocking action while he's on the phone, and the handheld camera in the middle of the hotel room to create an interesting scene.

Surely there are smaller , lighter cameras which would ease the burden ?

smaller, lighter cameras tend to add micro-stutters and other stabilization issues. It's a trade-off

Why on earth are these cameras made so big and heavy?? I mean, a high end iPhone has a powerful camera. I can only imagine that 4 or 5 times the size of an iPhone with the best lenses can produce incredible footage.
