Watching the birds stare at and peck the jewelry was great!! I didn't know they were drawn to shiny stuff!

I know you gave the caveat of limiting the time, but hanging chickens upside down for any length of time is very dangerous for them and can even be fatal. Especially if they are sick. Their respiratory system is so different than ours and the weight of their organs on their air sacs in an upside down position can make it very difficult for them to breathe. Even if they live, it is still stressful. They only look calm because their nervous system has essentially frozen or shut down, since a prey animal in that position in nature would likely be about to die. So while they may appear calm, they are likely extremely afraid and possibly in pain or discomfort. It's also really important not to hold them too tightly, since they don't have a diaphragm to force inhalation and exhalation. So too much compression again means they can't breathe. I made a fabric sling with two holes that their legs go through for mine. I gather the fabric around them, secure the top edges and hang it up. It keeps them well supported and contained, kind of like an easier version of the towel wrap. This makes it really easy to examine most parts of their body and doesn't seem to stress them out much. Wing pats, treats and Rescue Remedy helps make it easier too.

Hi just wondering if your sling requires sewing skills or is a particular shape of fabric i.e. scarf-like, and is simply wrapped a certain way?
@rainbowconnected
@rainbowconnected Жыл бұрын
@@WildberryAB Nope, no sewing skills required. It probably would be better if I had hemmed all the edges, especially of the leg holes. I took a rectangular piece of heavy canvas, probably about 30 inches by 14 inches. I cut two chicken foot sized holes in the middle of the length of the fabric. They're set maybe four inches from the edge of the narrower part. Hopefully that makes sense. If you stood a chicken in the middle of the length of the fabric, it might just be intuitively clear where the holes for the feet should go. Basically I just put them so the whole body would be supported. I wish I had a picture. Once I set the chicken in the sling, I draw the two short ends together over the chicken. Then I take a heavy duty clamp and secure the top edges of the fabric together which lets me suspend the sling from a hook. I don't make the fabric tight around them or anything, there should be some slack around them. Depending on the temperament of the chicken, a helper may be needed to keep them from trying to flap and freaking out. A helper can also hold the edges of the fabric in place of the clamp, though that can get really tiresome for the arm. I hope this makes sense and answers your question. If not, I can try to explain better.

@@rainbowconnected Thank you so much! This is a very good and detailed description. I have to inspect a big free-range rooster by myself so I do appreciate this very much. I'm so happy it doesn't need to be sewn. Thanks once again!❤

@@WildberryAB You're welcome, I hope it helps! Handling a roo like that can be intense. I used if for a very bitey rooster and he calmed right down. It might be helpful if you position the leg holes so there's a little extra fabric toward the front of the chicken. That way their face is surrounded by the sling. It helps calm them and keeps you somewhat protected from the beak. I also think it really helps if you calmly explain to them what you're doing and why. They may not understand the words, but they do seem to understand intent and are often calmer when they get that you're trying to help them.
@WildberryAB
@WildberryAB Жыл бұрын
@@rainbowconnected Good advice! For sure, I will do that with the extra fabric in front. Also, it's very interesting that you mentioned explaining things beforehand. I've done this forever with every animal I've had and it's absolutely true. I pray a little first that the Lord will have any available angel translate if necessary and voila, smooth sailing. I hope all will be well with this rooster, too. It was beyond awesome to come across your post just in time.🙂

i have one who lets me pick her up by simply scooping her up under her belly, leaving her legs dangling out the bottom of my fingers. doesn't flap or try to reset herself. just totally content with being picked up and carried around. her comb is so big it flops over her eye and she has to look at stuff sideways. she comes to the door to greet me anytime i go outside and if i sit down she will fall asleep in my lap. if i wasn't afraid of her crapping everywhere, she'd be an inside shicken. i could never eat them. just subbed to your channel. such a wealth of information. i feel like these are classroom worthy. at least for elementary school children but many people don't know that chickens need a rooster to make more chickens. it doesn't seem to click. seriously the number of ppl who think chickens lay fertilized eggs and just don't even know what the relationship of the rooster is, is just astounding. 85 yr old grandparents both had no idea.

A note about holding a chicken near your eyes: It depends on the chicken. They all have different personalities. My chickens Buffy and Dolly are very interested in eyes and will peck if they get the chance. Meanwhile, Maple and Honey are safer around eyes because they are not eye-peckers.

It's a bad habit though to let a chicken, or any bird, within pecking distance of an eyeball. Only takes one time...

@@chris2790 Well, by that logic, It's also a bad habit to let any dog within biting distance of your hand, even if the dog has never bitten someone, because it is not worth the risk.

The sound of your Voice in the calmness that you have with the chickens makes me feel calm . I got a problem with my chickens . I had 15 adult chickens I bought for my friend . They’ve been doing good for the last eight months but now three of my chickens have got where they were like zombies just standing around . I have free range my birds and they have about an acre of land to Rome around and eat whatever . I do not handle my chickens like you do . Frankly I don’t know how you catch them. lol. So the first chicken about a week ago I was doing what I was talking about someone told me to get rid of the sick chicken or maybe a little spread to the other chickens . So I killed it. Today when I come after being away about two hours to go to the store come home and found one chicken dead another one had the same zombie like symptoms . Killed it and worried about the other chickens . Do you have any advice ?

People have died that way. If the chicken hits a major vessel, you can be dead within mere minutes. Best to wear pants or boots if they are interested in pecking your veins.
