Cool. Funny story: I started making money as a hobbyist leather craftsman when I was 12-13 years old -seems like it was in the Pleistocene now! 😄- making exactly that: leather covers for Bic lighters and selling them first to small local handicraft shops. Then my brother got me a contract with Sears to sell 300 of them! It was crazy work for a kid and I finished with nasty blisters on my hands, but quite happy & with some money in my pocket. Thanks for sharing!
@freakofnatureco2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha Sears! ;) and that’s actually awesome!! I’d be stoked to get a deal like that as an adult! Quite the accomplishment, good for you! Are you still crafting today?
@manuelwebe2 жыл бұрын
@@freakofnatureco Well, I suppose I should give the credit to my brother RIP (a Sears employee by then) for the contract, but the Bic sleaves were good enough, they like them & they sold them out pretty soon. I am a research scientist now (animal ecology) so I do not have much time for leather work, unfortunately. I got on the small workshop table from time to time to make the eventual knife or axe sheath, wallet or other stuff and I still enjoy it very much. Keep the good leather work going. Your web page is very nice by the way. Nice that you work together with your husband on this. Thanks for asking.

Another idea one of my customers came up with. Professional wild feral pig hunters here in Outback Australia wanted a pouch for a double edged knife with the leather covering the entire knife and handle. Cos they are constantly losing their knives from standard knife pouches. For the point of the blade, I put a piece of aluminum at the bottom of the pouch to protect the leather from the sharp point which would have worn away at the leather. Customer suggested this idea. From a saddlemaker down under.

Wow, you have the same "quality" tools that I do. Not a fan of the punches, but someday I will buy better. I have the same awl too, guessing you got your kit on Amazon as well. I bought some new stitching punches, they were about $50 a piece, but oh boy, they are quality. Great off the cuff project you made here, no pattern, and still came together nicely. You might consider wearing a mask when sanding the edges, not good to breathe that stuff in. I use my remaining stock masks from the covid era...
@freakofnatureco2 жыл бұрын
You would be correct Johnny! I started off with an Amazon kit...slowly being phased out as I improve and gather funds. Wearing a N-95 definitely wouldn't hurt either. Thanks for watching & leaving some kind words!😊

Can you share what type of leather you use and where you get it from for a beginner?

I’m using 10oz(which is very thick, but you can get it any thickness you like) natural vegtan leather. Haven’t seen a leather store yet that doesn’t carry this type of leather. But a good place to start is Tandy leather store. :)
