Angel Policies & Copyright There seems to be a lot of confusion following our recent Masterboard Prompt, especially regarding the use of stamped images and whether it is legal to use them in our Masterboards and then copy them for our own personal use. Kylie and I have carried out an extensive amount of research regarding this, and it is our conclusion that if you scan or photocopy your Masterboard for your own PERSONAL use, even if you have stamped an image on it, you are NOT IN BREACH OF COPYRIGHT. There are no terms of use on stamp packaging because the term ANGEL POLICY is not a legally recognised one. You as the buyer would have to agree to the terms and conditions PRIOR to the purchase of the stamp. No contract has been established between the copyright holder and the buyer and the Angel Policy is therefore NOT legally enforceable. Many of the common stamps we all use have been created from images in the public domain, and these are not copyrightable and you are free to use them as you wish. A stamp can be copyrighted, however for the copyright to be granted, the image would have to be be changed so significantly from one in the public domain (for example a butterfly or a flower) that it was not recognisable from the original image. Please be clear that we would not condone copyright infringement and we ourselves would never knowingly do so. We are referring here to a very specific use and would always suggest that if anyone is unsure about their use then they look at Copyright Law. If anyone requires any further clarification, there is a great site which contains a wealth of valuable Angel Policy and Copyright information if you are interested. Tabberone.com

I am curious about the supposed legalities of selling something with a stamped image on it. Just because they say it's their policy it doesn't necessarily make it the law. They are selling you the means to use a stamped image, not the stamped image itself. It's not up to them how you use it. If they want you to keep the resulting image a secret that is invasive. They didn't invent butterflies etc. It's not an official copyrighted character. If they took you to court for selling a card with one on would a court uphold that as if you've injured their business? I hope someone can check that out if they know anyone in the legal system. I would be very interested to know for sure if they can demand private use only. I can't understand legal jargon myself. 😊

By the same token, the copyright issue could be extended to the use of books, magazines, newspapers, napkins, patterned paper, fabrics, die-cut shapes, stickers, washi tapes, etc and everything else we use in mixed media projects. It makes no sense at all to worry about these things!

Hi, When punches get stuck like that first try to knock it hard against a hard surface right way down. Try a few times, and you have to knock quite hard. Don’t use tools to hit the metal part, you risk to dull the sharp edges that way. When the punch gets unstuck punch a few times with waxed paper. I have found this works the best for me. 😊 Hugs, Erika

Another great share Nina . To unstick a punch I use a light hammer tap on the proud areas until it releases and then puch through tin foil to sharpen and clean the cutting edges . It only takes a little something to cause the jamb. great idea to cover the stamped areas on your Art Journal ... perhaps stamp and cut the stamped images several times and then stick over your printed image. ?? It Is for your personal use after all and the master board is beautiful. xx

Morning Lena. Basically, don’t stamp and scan. I had glued the stamped images on to my Masterboard as they were already stamped on deli paper from another project, but because I then scanned the Masterboard (even though its for my own personal use) that is the issue. You can only use original stamped images in any project, so to stamp on a scanned or photocopied background is fine. Anyway, I’m glad you like the buttons and I think Frida style ones will look fabulous. Have a wonderful week and see you next Sunday 💕💕💕

Your buttons are fabulous. Good luck fixing your punch. That looks like a good one. I am a slammer, and that has worked for me. I have used wax paper and sandpaper with mine, but never a lubricant. I was afraid the oils would continue to drip on my paper. Sandpaper and tinfoil are suggested as ways to sharpen, and the wax paper to keep the metal grinding smoothly. Love what you have done with your master boards. I made mine out of romantic/vintage Valentine cards I have received since the70’s. Don’t cringe, I only saved those with a certain look. I had about fifteen. I love how they came out. My friend copied them for me on her scanner. I didn’t stamp on them yet, but you have given me some great ideas. I don’t sell my work, but I wonder now if I should even bother using them. Such a scary area. Thanks for everything you do to improve my creative journey. You are an excellent teacher. Nina, don’t worry about it. No one will sue you. Costs to sue far outweigh any potential benefits, and would be impossible for the stamp maker to prove any damages they incurred by your use. They create angel policies in “hopes” of scaring people out of using them in their own sales, but they are unenforceable and ridiculous and useless intimidation if u just ignore them. Artymase doesn’t want anyone to use even a part of her work in something you sell. Ridiculous. How in the world could she possibly police that around the world, much less sue someone far away or prove she was damaged in any way? The only people who get sued are people with known big pockets who are mass producing, not little indies like us. It takes huge money to sue someone and there is no guarantee you would win much less collect even if you did win. They need to stop with the scare tactics and just be happy people buy their goods.

Sometimes a jammed punch will release after spraying with Jigaloo lubricant. A little tap on the sides may work too. If the is card stuck inside, soak it until the card softens and will get pulled out then dry the punch so it doesn’t rust.

It's hard to explain how I unjam my punches.... Bring it to me LOL. Sometimes the part where you put your paper in is crooked. I uncrook it a bit with scissors and the punch will pop out again. :-) Love your buttons! Thanks so much for the inspiration! XXX Hanny

Awww, bless you Hanny, I would love to be able to bring it to you. Luckily some good old WD40 has done the trick 🥰

Another lovely way to use your master boards. I’d never thought about the angel policy either, however when you have stamps etc that are years old and you can’t remember where they’re from what do you do? Probably be wary of using them. Thanks Nina x

I think if we follow the rule scan then stamp, we should be fine 💕 x

Hi, Nina! Lovely buttons. Being lazy, I would probably use some food packaging as the substrate so I wouldn't have to glue layers together. Try pushing on the under side of the punch with a screwdriver or spray it with some WD-40.

Thanks Kathy. Unfortunately my punches don’t seem to like food packaging as its too thick. 300 gsm is about as much as mine will handle. If you work in a batch, it doesn’t take too long 💕. My heart punch was fixed btw using WD40 💕

I love your buttons so much, TFS! I add Glossy Accents or Modge Podge Dimentional Magic to mine to give them a shinny bubbly top. I just shove a tooth pick or a wood skewer in the holes until dry so my holes don't close up.

Thanks so much Celine. I will probably add glossy or even bees wax to mine too 💕

I have just come across your video, and I must say I have seen several videos on how to make buttons, and I love yours. They are absolutely gorgeous and so easy to do. Thank you 💜

Maybe spray the jammed punch with some WD40 and let it soak overnight. It works for most things. You will have to clean the grease off afterwards before using it, though. I love the buttons and enjoyed January's prompt and look forward to February's one.

Thank you for reminding me of making buttons. Yours are so pretty❣ Yes, Angel Policies, Copyright laws, Trademark laws all are some things to watch out for.

Nina, it is great to know that we can make our own art, copy it, then add original inked stamps. We all want to honor the various Angel policies.

Thanks Katie. Copyright and Angel Policies are a minefield and as you say we all want to play by the rules 💕
