The advice I would give if you dont want an expensive dslr (which can be overly complicated) but want better quality photos that a phoe is to get a bridge camera. Something like a Fuji Finepix range. It does close ups (that some DSLR wont unless you spend 100's on lenses), they ares so bulky so easy to hold all day and will allows setting to be changed. The main setting is the white balance so what ever lighting you have you can compensate by using a white sheet of paper so all photos will then compensate witha accurate white background.
