What about a chasing attachment? 2 masonry wheels mounted about 30mm apart for chasing water pipes or electrical conduit. Works a charm, but don't use the wife's vacuum for dust extraction! Cost me a lot of money for a new one!

I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read kzbin.infoUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.

A very useful video. I bought my first angle grinder a month or so ago to help cut out mortar so I could repoint a stone building with lime. It has proven slow going with fibre discs. As a result of seeing this video I bought a diamond cutting disc for masonry. It’s been a revelation. The speed of cut is better than I could have hoped for, and it’s reduced the chiselling effort substantially. Thanks. 👍

Another little tip for when you are using number 8. When using a diamond cutting disks for tiles is you have a wet sponge and hold it next to the disk when cutting it stops all the dust. Hope that makes sense. Great video as always!

I do agree that the small angle grinders (usually 115mm) are highly versatile power tools. That versatility can be further extended with some of the reputable tool brand 18/20volt cordless models. They're certainly not the cheap option but do come into their own on awkward to access jobs. I recently added a cordless 18 volt die grinder to my grinding stable. Fitted with carbide cutting burrs it is a brilliant bit of kit.

A word from a 30+ year mason. Those wide rake wheels do what they claim to do, but they grind along pretty slowly and they get your grinders very hot quickly. They do last a very long time - I've seen masons who use them burn up 10 or 12 grinders but save the disk which still works good to burn up another grinder. Most people may seldom grind out joints, but I do very often, and I've found that using a thin diamond blade in two passes, one on each side of the joint and popping out the middle with a trowel edge or chisel is still much quicker, and cost you far fewer grinders, and even though it is still very dusty, it's far less dust than grinding it all out is. They'll still get hot and need to cool off, but you'll get to work more than the cooling time with the thin diamond blades. Another tip for whichever grinder blade you chose, if you have a good sized project to grind out and tuck point back in - start with two ( or more) angle grinders and blades so as soon as one gets too warm, you can set it by a fan in the shade, and hopefully by the time the second is hot, the first is ready to go again. ( If you're using rake wheels, you might need 4 or more grinders to get in 8 hours of grinding in an 8 hour day without burning up some grinders )

@@stephenarling1667 I use them all the time, but not usually to clean joints for tuck pointing, more for removing brick or block when masonry units need to be replaced, or if the faces of them do. The impacting going on around joints would chip up the neighboring block or brick too much, leading to me having to replace more and more. I would cut around the joints surrounding the units I were taking out on the outside of those joints first with thin diamond on a grinder. Maybe even cut that brick I were removing, depending on the hardness of it, a few times in the middle with a grinder too, so pressure had somewhere to go other than into neighboring units. Then I'd get the SDS hammer drill and chisel that unit from the middle outward taking out chunks and getting very careful, maybe even going to hammer and chisel when I got real close to the edges, to units that don't need removed (yet, there's likely to be a few anyway, but less of them is better). I wouldn't try a hammer drill on joints * with a chisel just to remove the mortar from the joints - there would be chips everywhere that you tried it. I will use a hammer drill with an SDS drill bit to drill holes that are smaller than the joint close together, and at several angles within the joint connecting holes, removing mortar, around a unit if my grinder not getting deep enough is causing too many neighbors to chip. Hammer drills with chisels are just too aggressive for fine work, but excellent for demo when used with a grinder or diamond saw. When you just want the joints out to tuck new mud in two thin grinder cuts, one on each side of the joint and remove the middle is still cleanest, easiest, and fastest. Don't think of it as twice the cutting, it's not. You are cutting only two narrow slices that still only add up to a small portion of one wide one that a rake wheel cuts and it's more than twice as fast due to what you don't have to cut. That narrow piece left between your two cuts isn't that tuff to get out. You can usually just stick the edge of a brick trowel in either cut and twist your wrist and pop out a foot or more of the remaining middle easily in seconds.

Great Video! You are right about the chain saw blade attachments, as a woodcarver, I can speak to the danger of these hideous tools. There are many instances where the kickback knocked the tool out of the hands and crawled up the user's body causing serious injury, and now there are copies of these coming out that are even cheaper to buy tempting novice carvers to buy one. Please note that there are safer alternatives that have 3 or 4 heavy carbide teeth that accomplish the same thing but without the kickback danger and with more control and only cost about $20 US.

Check out the Bosch Carbide Multi Wheel disc. They are absolutely brilliant with wood and other materials that the old range of cutters (diamond, abrasive etc) just aren't designed to deal with. And you don't need to carry a spare pair of undercrackers (and a thumb and forefinger) like with the chainsaw wheel. As a tradesman there are few purchases that have revolutionised my work but this is one of them.

I have a corded grinder (for years) and I love it so much that I decided to get a cordless one with variable speed. A speed control helps with sending and also gentile buffing. One attachment that I use and I did not see in your video is a carbon tipped saw blade that fits 4 1/2 inch grinder. I use it to trim trees from branches 1-2 inch thick. The grinder cuts right by the trunk, fast and clean. Cordless very helpful.

Thanks for an informative and sensible review of grinder accessories. The only improvement that I'd respectfully suggest would be that it's a bit safer when cleaning up the sharp edges of metal to have the abrasive wheel covering the workpiece and to grind away from the edge where possible.

I’ve seen some interesting countertops with objects imbedded in the countertop. Coins but other objects I don’t quite remember. Maybe leaves that left an impression in the top. The items were placed on the bottom of the mold and the concrete poured over them. They were quite long counters and required rebar. Used in a trendy shop in San Francisco back in the 90s.

But you do such quality work and have such quality video production you are bound to do well. Ask any big YT channel and they'll tell you if it takes 4 years to get 100k, then 250k happens in 2 years, 500k in one year, and 750k in 6 months and 1 million in 90 days. No exactly those number, but the idea holds. The more subscribers you have the faster you add new ones.

2 tips with wire wheels. 1 do not use gloves with any sort of weave anywhere on them when using them (they can catch and force their way under the gloves or just catch and dig in). 2 use a leather apron when using them, it will save you pulling wires out of your legs and chest. And a bonus one, use a face shield for the same reason. I promise the above is worth doing from personal experience. Also some grinders come with an safety clutch, also useful with wire wheels if your wearing a baggie t shirt.... Yeah using a wire wheel on a grinder wasn't the way to go when stripping the paint off my Colchester chipmaster lathe. In the end the karcher with a sand blasting fitting was way better. Oh and great video btw.

Which type of angle grinder disc do you recommend for removal of old rough concrete wall paint? The wire cup wheel does a pretty good job on a rough wall but it takes too much time and effort to cover a large area of wall as the contact area with the cup is smaller. I have a 4 inch angle grinder and I'm thinking you'd suggest the one with the hook & loop velcro pad with 60 grit sanding pad?

@@alockworkorange7296 see, that's the problem: everyone makes small mistakes sometimes. Looking at the way risk mitigation is approached (I'm an engineer), where it isn't possible to design away the risk entirely, what you need is multiple safety players between the hazard and the event. This is why you use a push stick and a blade guard with riving knife whenever possible on a table saw, and you avoid having trip hazards around was well. This idea is also used in the pharmaceutical industry. Drug manufacturers want products where the gap between a "therapeutic" dose and a fatal one needs to be as wide as possible. They don't want 1 pill is good, 2 pills is dead. With paracetamol/acetaminophen the dose is 1g and you are pretty safe up to 10g. With the chainsaw disk, none of the mitigations available significantly assist in adding those layers, meaning that the tiniest error can become catastrophic in the blink of an eye.

I've raked, literally, miles of mortar in my day, with a grinder... the old school wide abrasive discs work fine, at a much lower cost than the diamond rake wheels. Do the horizontal runs until the disc wears down a bit then go back and do the vertical joints (*you can see in this video the diamond rake wheel comes very close to being too large to do the vertical joints without damaging the bricks). Be prepared to kill off a grinder with all the dust they ingest... perfect reason to buy the cheapest grinder Harbor Freight sells along with a 10-pack of the grinding discs.

Brilliant video. I’ve had an angle grinder in the shed unopened for years and I didn’t know much about blades etc. One thing would have been great would have been a part on safety. I’ve seen a video of the chainsaw one causing kickback and slicing the operator’s neck. Thanks again.

Still trying to decide on an angle grinder myself. I was hoping to get a 7" Rigid brand one, but now I'm rethinking things because finding wheels for it might be a problem. One person said they bought it, thinking it would do the trick, and turns out it only accepted Type 27 discs. I'm slowly hoping to add to my tool collection so I can do projects around the house.

When I want to make a very precise cut into steel, I'll use the slitting disks just as you recommend, but I'll leave about 1mm (or more) on the piece. I'll then take a 120 grit flap disk and very carefully remove the last bit of material. It's accurate down to about 0.1mm and great for joining corners.

Thank you for the great video! I bought my first angle grinder last week and although I knew about almost all of these accessories, I only knew how to use a few of them. I have used angle grinders on occasion before, but never owned one until now. I have some rough spots in my patio that I'm going to get one of the diamond grinding wheels to smooth them out. Cheers!

I used to manage a Makita factory service centre, I would have emphasized the use of a heavy duty face shield while grinding. I've seen a face shield with a half a broken grinder disk through it, the wearer got a slight scratch but would have been possibly killed or severely wounded without it.

Most important for me are, zip cut, wire wheel, wire cup wheel, diamond, flap discs in various grits for finishing and the old time classic, your standard thick grinding wheel. For polishing, the felt wheels are super handy. On the DIE grinder, zip, abrassive and polishing wheels are counting to my most used ones.

You can get dry diamond disks for cleaning and polishing marble and granite but wet polishing is always preferable and if doing concrete and stone dry always use correct dust protection.

Great job showing/ telling about the various uses! Even with many years of metalworking experience, I did not know about the chainsaw blade attachment! OMG, yes that's an attention getter. My woodworking skills are basic at best, but I'm psyched to try the chain saw blade, in making art objects from old/ recycled wood. Super cool! I've used grinder / sander disks on wood, and they indeed have a rapid cut rate, and yep, mess is guaranteed. For the wood chip/ wood dust issue, I've rigged up the shop vac in various ways to collect "most" of the dust, or preferably gone outside entirely, to save my shop are from looking like it just snowed saw dust, inside ;) I'd point out that with any of the sanding/ grinding types, it's a REALLY good idea to wear a good dust mask, or a well-fit respirator w/ cartridges. Significant exposure to metal and or ceramic dust can be a serious health issue. Fantastic vid and explanations! Love the bow tie too :)

Hi there, terrific video. I used my angle grinder to cut down a large bush to ground level and bought what is essentially a circular saw blade for the grinder. they can't be obtained in the shops etc (deemed too unsafe apparently) ,but got one on e-bay. Did an excellent job, but be very careful.

Bosch Carbide Multi Wheel is a must for me you can cut wood even there is a nail inside , also you can cut plaster ,pvc and safer than wood carving disc
