I am dealing with this exact condition. The inside handrail meet the landing and makes a 90* right turn- there is no room on the landing to extend the handrail 1 tread width to maintain the correct elevation as it would protrude too far into the landing. Code requires the handrail to be continuous. Does code allow for the vertical drop? It meets the continuity requirement but as mentioned is not ergonomic. Can you respond to this? TIA

You should check with your local building department, but most of the time it's allowed or they will allow for odd situations.

@@stairbuilding Thanks for the reply. I plan to submit an RFI on it with a sketch so they can see the problem. They can accept it, make the landing longer or provide their own solution. The design team's obligation often gets shuffled off to the fabricator so I just toss it back to them.

I’m trying to get the handrail code in CA in laymen’s terms. Do you have any videos explaining the requirements? I don’t want a handrail on the bottom set of stairs, but there are 8 or so risers.

Can’t think of a real-world example of this. It’d be hard on the wrist while descending.

I've seen it a lot, but you're right, who is going to run their hand down odd sections that won't make a comfortable transfer.
