Hi Alex, great watches, I have always felt that longines watch making history and contribution are top notch. The problem is that they are owned by a conglomerate that has forced them to stay within a certain price point, which is a shame. Very much like a racing horse that has the potential to go much faster but has been tied down.
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
This made absolute sense and still makes sense... If Nicolas G. Hayek would have chosen Omega to be positioned under Longines it today would be Omega who would play the role of Longines in the group. But wait a little and you will see that Longines is coming back with a lot of very, very cool watches. Longines vs. Tudor is name of the battle!
@eddiedevonrex23084 жыл бұрын
I agree and disagree with your statement, it makes business sense, yes. But infrequently some of the swatch lower tier watches should be allowed to unleash their top tier creations without interference. I am sure longines vaults have some spectacular old chrono movements and designs that can compete with the best. It’s also good for the morale of master watchmakers at longines rather than being pigeonholed. Sometimes a bit of creative destruction is good for a company. Lastly, I wish they would give a option of sapphire casebacks as an extra option to look at the movement. Nomos does that
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
Longines has watches and calibres in its collection that could today even as they are compete with the very best ones of the industry... The brand is on the move as I just wrote before. You will see more of the watches you wish very soon... Longines is getting ready!
@randyallen27714 жыл бұрын
Good looking watches for sure Alex. It's nice to see Longines becoming more prominent in the market (or that's the way it seems over here) and especially nice to watch them flex their history to their advantage. I recall as a child with no knowledge of watches, hearing the name Longines, and thinking " what a cool name, this must be a high class watch". Years later I learned that Lindberg had used an Longines watch to navigate his historic flight and I wondered why they weren't prominent any more. It seems that is changing. Thanks once again for your detailed coverage of this new collection. If I could ask a small question, is this new calibre 888 the same base as Tissot is using as the 8S (I believe), something of an ETA 2824 with a free sprung balance and silicon hairspring?

Any idea of the service cost on that modular movement? Usually those things are a nightmare to get serviced.
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
Not more than any other chronograph from the brand ... You, the customer are not “punished” therefore ...
@watchnerds4 жыл бұрын
Usually modular movement is easy to repair, you know... Maintenance repair usually only consist of repairing the main movement, as most of the time, chronographs aren't like running constantly like its main movement during the wear. But if there's problem in the module, we just replace it with the new module. It's the way it is if you're servicing your watch when you go to swatch group service Center, but, if you go to your own watchmaker, it is indeed a headache, especially this chronograph module used, as it's not dubois depraz modules like tag heuer and any other brand used thus the pushers are sitting in different plane from the crown, but it used specifically made module by eta for Longines (rado used it too, with their own configuration), which need special movement holder just to put the module in place. It have much different construction compared to the dubois depraz. Let's say that you compare it to a stack of a burger which had a lot of different fillings. The dubois depraz feels like a stack of big mac as whenever after the filling, it got buns in between to kept the filling in place, while this module is like a burger stacked with lots lots of filling so high that if you don't press up the top buns, the fillings just going to fall apart from the burger. In that case, the special movement holder would act like a stick/toothpick to put all the stacks of the filling together so it doesn't fall apart, which if your watchmaker don't have, it will be really hard to put it down together.

@@WatchAdvisor well... Keep dreaming.... As Longines position in the Swatch Group is kinda "affordable fine watchmaking", I don't think ever that they could re-release the movement like omega do with their 321 movement. Just hope that I'm wrong, as 13ZN movement is breathtaking when I serviced it.

@@WatchAdvisor yeah... But I'm not quite sure, cz their movement (l990) is (if I recall) still being manufactured and sold to roger dubois for their watch movements from the simple one to the one that got the perpetual calendar. Unsure if it's longines that produced it or the right of the production of the movement already being taken over by roger dubois entirely, like, you know... Lemania/omega 321 chronograph movement that is developed for vacheron constantin or patek philippe. Sure they'll reproduce it or maybe still in production but for whoever knows what brand used it.

In my opinion there is some certain charm about the misalignment of module-chronographs. As there is a certain charm about the misaligned crown on the case of the Reverso duoface. I would never consider it as failure of construction.
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
Only a minority thinks so! Especially when we talk about the misaligned push-pieces vs the crown of chronographs... I think the Reverso itself is such a special watch that all kind of things are allowed and accepted...
@h.n.66414 жыл бұрын
@@WatchAdvisor I mean especially the Heuer Monaco. THE ONE module chronograph. The new model doesnt show the misalignment any more. But this misalignment is part of the watch. It belongs to it right?
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
The historic HEUER Monaco was equipped with the Calibre 11 and there the crown was on the left side of the case whilst the push-pieces were at the right side. This was due to the believe of those who developed one of the first automatic chronographs that when wearing the watch one would no longer need the crown to wind the movement...
@h.n.66414 жыл бұрын
@@WatchAdvisor Yes you are right of course. But also the more contemporary successor calibre 12 was still with the chronograph module. As a reminder you had the misalignment. I love the misalignment, always reminding me of this history of being the first autonatic chronograph but with the little drawback that it wasnt integrated like the el primero. A flaw in the design as a reminder of the flaw in technique. So the misalignment is part of that history of a movement being first of a kind but with a flaw.... because of that it wouldn't bother me. You know what I mean? It is a conversation starter about the history of the watch. Of course it is more elegant with this Longines chronograph...but still. Anyway I am enjoying our conversation.

I respect Longines as a brand, it's history and some nice pieces. I also understand the idea behind trying to recreate the look after so many dacades. But.. for such a thick watch I would still expect a nice date window (so much blank unused space) and a chronograph that can deliver, not just 30 minutes counter... 🙈
@WatchAdvisor4 жыл бұрын
That’s a module chronograph, so the date would look like the one at the AP Royal Oak Offshore Chronos... better not! The 30-minute-counter is identical with the historic watch shown in the video and the latter does also have no date...

@@WatchAdvisor actually the module used here have the date disc mechanism as well as the hour counter on 6 o'clock, they just remove it. Idk about the date disc tbh as sometimes the module most of the time comes with date disc as well but just closed by the dial as the dial got no date window.
