Your open gate footage looks 👌🏾. This is the evolution of the “pocket” camera. I do see this camera geared to high-end productions with: (1) BRAW only, (2) Open Gate, (3) lens adaptability and (4) the OLPF (which is a first for BMD).

Super interesting release. Would like to know what the rolling shutter is like. Will need to see if there’s enough of a difference in the image for me to swap my 6K Pro. Think I will struggle without the internal ND’s and to invest in FF lenses from my crops. That 6:5 Anamorphic mode is mad. Great overview mate 👌🏻

@@RajeshKumar-ob9zy that's what we thought with the EF mount on the 6K and they were able to make it. And Sony has been able to find a way to put electronic variable nd with IBIS on a single body....so, there's no excuses. I can bet 100$ right now that Blackmagic will annonce a 6K PRO Full-frame in the next year or so.

Thank you mate, not sure why I didn’t see your comment before! I haven’t really tested rolling shutter yet but I think it’s pretty similar to the Pro or slightly worse. Doesn’t really make a difference for me though with the type of content I shoot. The image however is insane and definitely superior! Lack of NDs is a shame for sure! Keen to see what you do ☺️👊

@jambononi
@jambononi 9 ай бұрын
@@WAHB50YYI think it's just that it won't change the way you use the camera. So it doesn't have significantly different frame rates or features that bring it in line with other cameras in this price range. Especially auto focus (I get it about auto focus but it's true, it is the obvious speculation). I think a lot of people will be disappointed by this. I'm sure the image is better (hard to tell as this guy is so good anyway). And makes me wonder whether a better super 35 sensor with more features would grab people more. ESPECIALLY when you lose the Nd filters.

The selling point for me on this new model is the fact that it has an open gate full-frame sensor at a cost lower than the FX6 or even the FX3. Aside from internal NDs, this camera is a solid package for the new generation of Blackmagic Design cameras.

I was super excited about this camera after hearing rumors floating around. Full frame? L mount? Amazing! As an owner of the OG BMPCC6K, I was hoping this was the update I was looking for. Unfortunately, it's just the same camera with a bigger sensor. I picked up the Lumix S5IIX instead. Full frame, L mount, 6K open gate, all of those same features + great auto focus + incredible IBIS + a more manageable body style. Hopefully the MKII/Pro version of this brings back the built in NDs. That might make it worth it.

Work great with the S5 iiX so I guess here as well. Would be great to hear about dynamic range, low light tests and maybe a bit of hand held shots using the gyro info on post? Cheers!!! Nice video and definitely beautiful footage. I hope you can make more tests of moving subjects and moving camera too, I’d really like to feel what’s the motion cadence of this sensor/camera. It feels from your images more organic, reminded me original BMPC, but I’d love to see more footage. Also, I wish Blackmagic would create a camera in the style of Red Komodo/ Sony FX6, more boxy, with that magical built-in electronic ND filters like Sony has, and obviously with their own great codec, menus, etc.

Before watching your video, my thoughts are that this is a stepping stone towards a better camera but not the right upgrade for me. Full frame L-mount is a welcome addition but the internal ND's of the 6K Pro are too valuable. Had they done the upgrade in a square body like the new 4K Micro I think many would have considered it. I may even pickup the new micro and rig it into a field camera but will need to investigate the right accessories to do so.

Great first impressions. I just noticed on the specs that 6k full width sensor readout (17:9) is limited to 48. Being in Australia I use 25p project rates all the time and often need 50fps for slomo broll. This camera looks like it cold be a great choice for me but if a client needs me to shoot slomo for a standard 25p project I could be a bit stuck. I guess could just shoot S35 crop but then might as well just get the Pro. Anyway thanks for the review.

I've become really sold on this camera, having initially thought from the spec sheets that there was not much to see here... but those images on the BM website gallery (some of them yours) are really impressive. To my eye, the image is more 3 dimensional, somehow has more depth: subjects have just enough extra separation from the background that you perceive depth, not a 2D picture. You don't see it in the indoor shots so much, but the outdoor shots feel alive. The 6k Pro produces beautiful images, but they are more painterly looking than immersive, for me the full frame images invoke more emotional feel - talking just of images, not of the story and characters (of course story is ultimately more important than camera choice). However, the difference is a very fine one - and whether it's worth it or not depends on the projects you have in mind for it. For me, I really appreciate that BM has gone all-in on raw and created a camera that makes it as easy as possible to produce beautiful raw files, with all you need - including proxies - to go straight into the edit from camera. That, and the BM pipeline optimised for BM Raw, makes this camera something special for anyone willing and able (in project turnaround terms) to shoot everything in raw. Or put it the other way round: this camera is an invitation to embrace raw and produce the highest quality imagery possible for your project. The icing on the cake is the price: you simply can't beat the value-for-image equation on offer. The S35 crop images coming out of this camera look stunning too, making it an easy upgrade path for anyone already invested in APS-C glass. It's clearly not a camera for everyone, but it'll be near-perfect for some. And it really doesn't need much if any rigging.

Great video as usual! I want to move to FF for one reason only, to use my helios at 58mm instead of 83mm like on my BMPCC4K. This camera looks very interesting, but I do wish they could incorporate it into a better form factor for rigging! However I really love what BM are doing and this encourages me that they are still heading in the right direction!

Bravo Florent! That open gate 6K really seems like the biggest selling point to me. If only I hadn't just sold my Great Joy 50 😂the anamorphic shots you shared just looked stunning and circumvented a lot of the issues I had with that lens on a 16:9 image. NDs would have been really nice, continuing on from the 6K Pro, but as you say there must be a reason they weren't included. I just hope it wasn't an intentional choke so they can sell a version with NDs next year. I'd like to think Blackmagic don't play those games.

The new footage looks great, but the mountain shots are genuinely breathtaking! Personally, it's a mixed bag of appealing aspects, but quite a few negatives - not "pocket" like the original nor a "box" form, no ProRes is surprising, and no built in NDs takes away what would have been a big selling point. I've been happy mixing Pocket 4k with Lumix S5IIx footage for auto focus, so this might be an interesting option down the road. edit: Any indication of whether there is IR filtering or is this the usual situation with Blackmagic cameras where we have to provide IR cut to avoid IR pollution?

Nice one Flo! So jealous you got a sneak peak! Image looks crazy good! (Colours look REALLY nice - big step up no?!) I'm very tempted (esp. at that price!) even though it lacks a few things I was hoping for (higher frame rates at 4k - 120 would be nice, also internal NDs). All in all, it'll really depends on rolling shutter - how did it feel in your experience? BTW, loving the new set °¬)

Your footage looks fantastic (as always), shooting open gate is certainly a change and is interesting move by Blackmagic. I would miss the internal nds, but at its' price, it makes for a really cheap raw enabled PL mount camera. But part of me thinks that they are perhaps saving a few bits for a full frame URSA. But congrats to them for pushing the limits. After all this is a camera that is full frame and shoots raw internally and is L mount Wow.

Good video, and gorgeous footage. Blackmagic does wonderful things with their sensors. There was a time when image quality trumped everything for me, but that was when digital acquisition was in its infancy and most cameras sucked. Today, there are a handful of incredibly worthy performers with feature sets that are mandatory for anything I would personally buy moving forward. One of those is a robust AF system, especially one with tracking capabilities. Both Canon and Sony dominate here. Yes, I know, people still say cinematographers made movies for a century without AF, and no pro needs AF and blah blah. People also got from place to place on horses for centuries, too. We use tools because they help us be more productive, more efficient, and frankly, perform better. There are absolutely insanely talented human beings in the world that can pull focus in remarkable ways, but most of us don't have access to them. Whether you're shooting on a gimbal with no great way to deal with focus, or pushing in on a dolly shot at an f/1.4 aperture and have to keep an actress' eyes tack sharp, there are all kinds of common scenarios that present focus challenges. Modern advancements have actually made situations like this trivial, so to not have that tool in your bag puts you at a massive disadvantage. That is, of course, not to say that AF is appropriate in every situation - but that for those where it can help, it is an indispensable asset. The other thing that I'm sure plenty of other people will bring up is that the form factor is awful... I've used just about every camera out there (including the original 4K pocket as a personal daily driver for several years), and I can say this with full confidence. Nobody likes a wide body. BMD is super aggressive on price (which is wonderful), and it looks like the images that this new offering can produce are solid. The cameras are a little quirky, though, and they've actually taken a step backward by removing the NDs. Unfortunately, AF development is not an easy task, and I fear as time goes on they will slip further and further backward unless they make up some ground here before long.

Great stuff! Could you please share a little more info about anamorphic. I have the Great Joy 85mm 1.8 squeeze anamorphic, and this would be great to put on the camera I guess. But the online manual and info states that to get the 1.8 squeeze ratio you have to shoot in Super35 4:3. Is that correct? Your anamorphic footage was shot in the full frame 4:3 or the cropped 6:5? Thanks!

It was a rumor that had been going around for a while on the various online communities but many didn't give it credence, but Blackmagic proved the skeptics wrong. As far as I'm concerned, Blackmagic has always made interesting products and this 6K FF is no exception. As much as I have a predilection for the S35 (due to my personal taste) I think I could consider this camera because it would allow me to build my set of lenses on the 50mm instead of the 28mm as I do now; I say this because I wouldn't mind having a Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 as my go-to lens at all. Another plus is that the price of the 6K G2 could drop a bit, which wouldn't be bad 🙂

I’ve been a BMPCC4K user for a little while now, and I feel once that camera has been paid off I’m likely going to make this upgrade. I’ve gone my whole shooting career without using internal NDs so I’m not too upset about the lack of them with this. While I do enjoy shooting outdoors my main focus is narrative works and I have no problem dropping filters in a matte box. Also the L-Mount is a big win for adapting PL lenses.

They’ll probably add internal NDs in the BMCC FF Pro-next year. So don’t rush. Also are you willing to lose frame rates for a photography format? FF isn’t a cinema format. The only projector screen that could reproduce the aspect ratio properly is IMAX and this resolution is vastly lower than 15 perf. So this would have to be upscaled for that. This camera seems pretty gimmicky to me. I guess the 6;5 anamorphic is nice but the lack of frame rates are deal breaker for my needs.
@Liam-Scott
@Liam-Scott 9 ай бұрын
@@StringerBell2002 The frame-rates aren’t an issue for me, I don’t shoot outside 23.976, and I’m not personally a fan of slowmo, though I see why others would like HFR. I’m also an anamorphic shooter, but my main draw to full frame open gate at 6K is the amount of light hitting the sensor, the ease of VFX work on a large format, and the ability to crop in and downres to 4-2K when necessary.

I think this new camera is great! I really like using my BMPCC 6K, I like the look, the menu and the options I get for recording! I see you are using an adapter from EF to L mount, so I suppose that works ok, right? To have all the lens data and also to change the aperture on lenses that don't have an aperture ring. But the L mount is great if we can adapt more lenses on this camera! I think I would miss the ProRes option, because I usually use ProRes for almost everything, but maybe an update could fix that, haha!

There are a lot of people griping about the lack of ND, but there are ND lens adapters already in existence for several longer flange distance mounts that can be adapted to from L mount, and one will still retain the full frame sensor while doing so, unlike with speedboosters/ focal reducers one can simply add ND to this to the back just like people are doing with the Komodo & Komodo-X.

One thing that's always been an issue for me with the s35 sensor of my 6K Pro is filming in small spaces. I feel like I have got very lucky - I came really close to buying an S1H recently for use as a "studio" cam but held off as it's become a bit aged. I have since been looking at wider, expensive lenses, but again held off because I had hoped something was coming this year, and seen the rumours online. This is terrific news from Blackmagic; the 6K Pro still is very useful with the ND filters, but now I can get the most out of my full frame glass. And have it be BRAW internally! Hoorah. :)

No internal ND's IS a dealbreaker for me. Literally cancelled my B&H preorder along with the nearly $1000 in accessories when I noticed it. I'll wait for the full-frame URSA or "Pro" version of this that includes ND's. I'm a huge Blackmagic fan, just got my 12K back from the factory with the OLPF upgrade--but this is a huge misstep for them. I can't go back to fumbling with variable ND on a doc shoot, I inevitably will miss a shot due to it.

The great thing about Blackmagic is how they offer DaVinci Resolve for free and even their free version blows Premier Pro out of the water. If I get into video more, I will invest in Blackmagic products, because if their cameras and video equipment is any thing like their editor, it is the top of the line Pro for sure.
