We pulled out all the stops to enable repairability: parts, schematics, guides, and an easily serviceable design. If we were scoring this product, we'd score it very highly. But that's not fair. We're biased. We made it, and we just aren't a fair or neutral arbiter of a repairability score for our own product. So: what do you think? We value the opinions of the reviewers like Tom Nardi and Josh Hendrickson. We'd love to hear what Hugh Jeffreys thinks about it. Please, score away. We'll take our lumps. If there are areas we fall short, we want to hear about it.

I would have liked it a bit more if it followed some of the choices made for the Miniware TS101 and Pinecil irons, mainly by having temp controls and display on the iron itself, it's not a big thing but it does provide extra options if you don't want to use the battery bank

The Pinecil is an excellent device backed by a lot of documentation. We're big fans and several of our colleagues have (at least) one! Our soldering solution is more expensive but does bring some other things to the table. For an apples to apples comparison, the Smart Soldering Iron is a 100W iron for $80, offers tool-free tip replacement, built in safety features, sub-5 second soldering readiness, and supports our mission to promote right to repair: www.ifixit.com/products/fixhub-power-series-smart-soldering-iron. At the end of the day, there is no one size fits all solution. Everyone will choose a product based on need and budget. You do you!

I feel like the board should have been separate from the battery pack in it's own case so you could just plug a battery pack etc into a the board box, which you then control the soldering iron with, as is being forced to buy a battery pack with a limited life span is counter productive and just makes the item far more expensive
@jojosworlds12082 ай бұрын
The iron has a webinterface where you can control everything as far as I know. So if you have everything you need for soldering at home, just buy the iron itself without the rest, they sell it standalone.

Yeah but that means if you are soldering something and want to change the temp, you have to stop what you’re doing, connect it to a pc, change the temp, take it back to your work, hook it back up and then get back to work. "Wow, this looks really gre.... **sees price** oh, oh well." I am also struggling to understand how this would work off a standard battery pack when all the adjustments seem to happen on the proprietary one that's part of the product itself, and not on the iron. Some really great ideas in this product, but some baffling ones as well--ones I think iFixit would goggle at confusingly if they were reviewing it as someone else's product.
