Fell in love with this product the second I saw it and I HATE laptops. This laptop just has such a good idea I couldn't not like it. I went from hoping it does well to buying one myself. If anyone is in the market for a laptop please buy this laptop and support this company

I really love the modularity with these laptop designs. Hopefully many more companies jump on this idea and expand upon it and take the route of API's 500 series (a format for analog music gear) modules

Not really guys, from an Engineer point of View I like this Device and going to buy one. The Hassle that you have as an Engineer to have Dongels with you for certain things you need to do,is throught these modulair dongels amazingly easy to swap and I can bring all those Dongels with me without any hassle. and Swap them when I need them. This is Amazing

Design is almost identical to ThinkPad t40 series which had all sorts of changeable bays and opened up the same way and frankly it was easy to change the screen! My first-ever laptop repair but it took 13 attempts for me to close up the bezel I almost threw it against the wall four times I had to take three coffee breaks to calm down! And it was the number one laptop series for 5 years, 2000-2005!

I'm really into the idea. My concern is with industry of cpu boards in general and not the company or product itself though. Most boards according to the article have to be custom. I hope that Intel or AMD will finally make standard cpu boards so we can swap it out easily instead of having to buy another board. That would make this laptop a real deal!
@BitsOfInterest3 жыл бұрын
Laptop motherboards are always custom and CPUs are soldered onto them. The CPU is the majority of the cost, so you can just replace the board and attach the other parts to it.
@wweeks3 жыл бұрын
With modules, you can stack them all to the new cpu motherboard.

I hope this doesn't fizzle out like project ara
@BitsOfInterest3 жыл бұрын
They are shipping product right now which is further than Ara ever got. Also they put this together in 18 months. Ara felt like years with all the delays until they finally cancelled it. Another pro is that Google is not involved, they love to cancel stuff.

Pre-configured version starts at $999. DIY version starts at $749.
@BitsOfInterest3 жыл бұрын
@@FAT8893 I would get the DIY version and source my own RAM and SSD. I can get the SSD cheaper than they list and they don't specify the timings on the RAM. You can get DDR4 3200 CL16 for less than whatever they are offering, at best it's the same timings. Edit: looking at the pictures it looks like that type of Crucial RAM is typically CL22. I'd get Crucial Ballistics DDR4 3200 CL16 for $10 less instead.
@FAT88933 жыл бұрын
@@BitsOfInterest I wonder what is the difference between Crucial's CL22 and CL16 RAM type.
@BitsOfInterest3 жыл бұрын
@@FAT8893 CL16 is faster than CL22. It's how many clock cycles it takes to complete an operation in memory. It's more important for gaming to get high fps. It shouldn't matter that much for productivity, but if you can buy the better version for less, then I would consider doing that. If you don't care about gaming you can also buy the same CL22 RAM cheaper somewhere else. I want 2x8GB which is $98 to add to the DIY version, but I can buy it for $85 on Amazon or even the manufacturer website.

How well would this do with lite 3-d modeling, lite editing, and games like Minecraft?
@KillahMate3 жыл бұрын
Image and video editing fairly well if you pick the right configuration, Minecraft extremely well regardless of your configuration since Minecraft works on everything. 3D modeling only to a pretty basic level, since this doesn't have a dedicated GPU - that's quite common for laptops in this class. But since the USB ports are Thunderbolt-compatible, that means external GPUs can be purchased and attached to the laptop if needed.

I'm sure you already know that (and will be jumpscared by the reply to a 3yr old comment) but there is now a gaming Framework laptop, the Framework 16! It also has a swappable GPU (the RX 7700S is currently the only option, but with how consistent they've been with making mainboard upgrades for the 13 inch model and given that this model is less than a year old I am confident new ones will come out in the future), or you can choose to go with the integrated 780M graphics to save money! those expansions or modules are not core modules and a USB-C expansion dongle can replace all of them. Pretty sure the cost of it is higher than an ordinary one from the beginning. Can't appreciate the value it claims.

Think, how easy and cheap it is to replace your modern MacBook battery and screen versus here where you can just unscrew, open it up, and pop in a new battery.
@saab92513 жыл бұрын
Yup, the dongle sure can but being able to put the ports you know you’ll need and not carry a dongle is a vast improvement in a lot of people’s minds. If you only put USB-C, people want USB-A. If you only include HDMI, people ask for DisplayPort etc. They also offer a 1TB storage expansion that pops into one of the slots if someone needed it. It comes down to other people probably have different needs than you and making it modular cuts down on SKU’s and designs.
