The X100VI actually lets you get different photos because of the IBIS, which in my opinion is the point of a camera upgrade. Not changing the design so people in the street know you've bought the latest fashion accessory like the newest iPhone. I'm a long-time X100 owner - I've had the X100S & currently use the X100F (long before tik-tok etc).. I have no idea why reviewers keep claiming the X100VI is a minor upgrade. This is the first time the X100 series has got IBIS, it's been over 10 years coming.. And the first time the megapixels have basically doubled. I personally wish they kept the 24MP sensor, but it's still a massive change.. I love street/travel photography and IBIS is a game changer for me when you combine it with the ND filter. Blurred crowds, waterfalls, indoor portraits/architectural shots etc. The main difference between the X100V & F was a sharper lens - the X100F lens is plenty sharp anyway especially considering most street photographers like me spend 90% of the time on f5.6/f8 where they are identically sharp.. And of course the flip screen upgrade was great but they also removed the buttons from the X100F which was a real shame.. I still won't buy the x100VI because the X100F is more than enough for me but I will definitely buy the X100VI in 5 years once the influencers set their eyes on the next shiny toy because the flip screen and IBIS would def let me get shots I can't with the X100F.

I have a (heavy) Sony full-frame camera. On holidays, a whole day away, it is heavy. That's why I recently liked the X100F. I really liked the image quality: soft in the middle of the photo at f3.6. That's why I exchanged it for the X100V. Compared to the X100F there is a world of difference (lens update). When I look at your review, the difference between the X100V and X100VI is small. So I decided not to wait for the X100VI and go for the cheaper X100V.

Thanks for this video! Although after those felt hundreds of other videos on YT I have not learned something new; I really like how you summarize the essential differences, instead of squeezing view time by comparing every minuscule detail from the spces with the predecessor. Personally I never owned one of the X100 series cameras myself and after fiddling about an hour with the X100VI of a friend, I very much liked the gadget, its handling, its features, But I have cancelled my preorder, because for me it's still too big to be carried with me all the times in a pocket for what I had planned to use it, and so I have bought a Ricoh GR III instead (no flash, "only" 24 MP, no aperture and focus ring) but 28 mm FF-equivalent focal length (which I guess I like almost like you do) and all the other features like the X100VI - not to mention I did not have to wait for months. [Edit: I've forgotten a real minus of the Ricoh: No Viewfinder (as purely optical add-on available).]

As an x100vi owner myself, I don't really know either. My main camera is the x pro3. A camera without ibis and 40mp. I rarely use flash and if I do, I use a more powerful one than the build in one in the x100vi, I rarely use nd filters and could very well put a Filter on but the convenience of using that Filter by a mere button press is nice! I was doing fine without ibis and 40mp, but maaan, Ibis is super nice to have. The x pro3 isnt exactly big with the 27mm on and I like 27mm more than 23mm. So what brought me to the x100vi? Design and the overall package. It is a very capable and compact camera. I don't have to think about which lens to use, if I should bring more lenses and so on. Pure psychological and bullshit to be honest because I could very well just grab my x pro3 with the 18mm f/2 on and be on my way. Yeah, I don't know. I like the camera a lot but could live well without it and seeing the insane prices now, I sometimes get the itch to cash in

I dont think its worth the jump from 100V and the image of 40 MP isn't that much better. I am not sure if the lens does the extra pixels any justices and I would like to hear the comparisons between xt5. The battery life is crap and drains quicker and it does not perform as good with ISO. I find it misses more on continuous focus, on occasions single focus in focusing behind or in front of subjects even though the focus square goes green where I position it. I know all new cameras have issues and I will wait and see what firmware update resolve before selling it and keeping my 100V instead. I have it from first day it was released and when I looked at the youtube video reviews on release day I thought most of these people don't shoot with fuji and talked BS. It seemed it was slower to reach Fuji shooters for reviewing the camera and I thought that was odd because its usually the other way around. I didn't upgrade my XT4 to the XT5 as I was waiting to see what the 100VI was like but that might change now.

As a user of Canon pro gear I thought I’d give the VI a go for a trip to China next week. My tests to date tell me the lens is up to the sensor and the IBIS is excellent. On battery life, I get 200 composed shots but just have a spare battery and a power bank that can charge the camera on the fly if needed. I considered the XT5 but then love pro Canon’s quality, durability, UI and handling characteristics, especially the hand grip. I have got the superb smallrig L handle, which transforms the handling for minimal outlay and weight. Excellent product. For me I wanted a small city camera to supplement my other Canon M5 travel kit which is superb too.

Great review and insightful as always. However, regarding your observation that Fuji should have made design changes significant enough that one could immediately tell the difference between models, would you expect Leica to do that with an M body? When you arrive up upon an iconic design that many people love, one that stands the test of time, you don’t make obvious alterations in form factor. The new model should be strikingly similar and feel the same in your hands. Like seeing a black M11 and a black M10 sitting side-by-side .Diverging from this design, which has been so incredibly successful, would indeed be killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Apologies I think I’ve missed explained, I’m not asking for a drastic design change… just something… and importantly I do expect the same from Leica M240 > M10, thinner design… movement of buttons, better screen M10 > M11, movement of buttons rather drastically weight change, new battery design and base plate With each of the above changes it’s very clear the camera is different, I dont have to check the model number to know which Leica I’m holding

I agree that XT5 is a much better choice for anybody looking to buy into the Fuji system, given the current pricing. Also if it is not going to give you anything extra then buying it for the sake of all the hype does not make any sense. The problem is all the hype surrounding this camera. How can any camera live up to this level of hype. As a long time user of X100 cameras I welcome the upgrades, but this is not my only Fuji camera and this has a completely different use than my XT5.

I don’t get people’s excitement about IBIS. A feature that does sacrifice image quality and where the downsides outweigh the benefits (if there are actually any benefits at all) by far and takes away even more control of the outcome from the photographer. I haven’t seen a single photograph yet that would justify it’s implementation over the possibilities you get from using a tripod if stability is crucial for the outcome. If people just want to be lazy and put the least amount of effort into their “photography” why not just use a phone instead?

@@venom2k2 The implementation of IBIS requires a lot of radical changes to the internal design of the camera body. The most important ones are the necessity to remove the heat sink from the sensor and to mechanically decouple it from the camera body (which is not the best idea in terms of stability to begin with). Not only you’re completely and permanently giving up the single most reliable mechanical stability (that can’t be replaced by any active IS no matter what), also the lack of proper heat dissipation in conjunction with a lot of additional components required for the system to work, like magnets, CPUs, electrical cuircuits and eventually bigger batteries to handle the amount of additional power drain and add additional heat themselves, result in a higher operating temperature of the sensor and a reduction of SN ratio (more noise). This is quite a lot of irreversible “damage” to the internal design and it has to sacrifice a lot for very little use cases (if any at all) while having a lot of potential for things to go wrong when not needed (which is most of the time) so, while it can slightly improve a poor technique for sure, a perfectly executed capture it can only make worse. Turning it off (which is what most people who don't understan how the system actually works would recommend) does not solve any of those problems because when switched off the sensor is only trying not to move, with all the downsides mentioned above still being true as the sensor has to be held in place by magnets all the time. A lot of manufacturers initially have refused to implement this technology for exactly those reasons, untill they eventually realised that people won’t understand the problems anyway and started to make it a selling point instead.
