Having favored asteroid tunnellers for late-game mining (not that I really end up using them much, given the issues this update seeks to solve with the late game) it's really cool to see a drill like this built for that purpose. A prototech overhaul of many craft is certainly in order for a lot of us - but, interestingly, this wouldn't solve every engineering problem. Scraper drillers come to mind, given your example, particularly those used to mine gargantuan amounts of ice for fuel processing, as something which would likely be more practical and perhaps more effective with normal drills as opposed to prototech ones. Curious what its alternate mining mode is like, the one which clears a larger area but destroys materials. That large mining ship at the end is gorgeous.
@Beeblebum3 ай бұрын
I shared the alternate mining mode in the 2nd part of the video - I honestly don't know the accepted term of what engineers call it, I just call it mining and digging as the 2 modes.

I'm glad that they're introducing more powerful tools while still giving them tradeoffs. It'll take time to see if this is a power creep update or not, but at least for the drill and thruster, it doesn't seem that way, which is good. There's still a use for the regular drill but it basically simplifies the process of mining large swaths of land, which makes sense given it being end game.

This is really exciting ! One note though: I'm afraid that this being an endgame block might pose a problem. See, by the time I've built a base and/or ships able to sustain production of end game blocks, I generally am all set up in terms of ore input etc. I'm just hoping that the increased need for magnesium might partially solve this issue. Well done one the video :)
@Beeblebum3 ай бұрын
Well, I am calling it End-Game Blocks because that is what Keen Described them as, but SE never really seems like there is a real End Game. You will need a lot of magnesium for example to build the prototech components (Zero Legion covered that in his video).

Amazing sketch there you did for the intro! I wouldn't call the power consumption a big advantage, even 10 kW for the rotor-drillhead is so little in this game. While "13 meters is bigger than 9 meters" (in terms of drilled area) is true, math makes it even more impressive. 9 Meter hole = 63.62 square meters of drill area. 13 Meter hole = 132.73 square meters of drill area. So not only is it far more efficient, it drills out over TWICE the amount of stuff in terms of surface area!

I would really advice to test combined drills in creative before you apply them in survival - Certain setups I made did explode violently after a while. And its gonna be a expensive one in survival.
@BackyardShenanigansYT3 ай бұрын
@@Beeblebum I wasn’t going to do that in survival, I was gonna carve out a space, build the station, then save the world as a start point (some how)
The tiered tech modder is either going "FINALLY" or "are you F'ing kidding me??" Personally, I've never been a fan of the "carving" functionality or of drills magically digging out rocks several meters away from the actual drill bit. It's handy, sure, but I wish they'd just make drills with heads wider than the block itself. Like how the hell is that protodrill making a hole that wide, you know?
@Beeblebum3 ай бұрын
Yeah, but you can put this reasoning to the test for a lot of things in this game and much won't make sense... (f.e.: how is one large grid drill able to hold +23Kl of inventory in a small space like that?) 😅
@therealbahamut3 ай бұрын
@@Beeblebum Fair...but that's also a completely intangible mechanic that causes almost zero effect in the game since your drills immediately empty into whatever cargo container you've got anyway. I'd be willing to bet the only reason drills even HAVE inventory at all is due to a programming limitation requiring it for stable interactions. I can see that one making it in purely for performance reasons. Given I know nothing about the code I could be entirely wrong but that's my best layman's theory.

Beeb's I love this!!! 😂😂😂

It would be great to also see a comparison of drilling speed; normal drills cannot go too fast or they start taking damage from the terrain. Does this new drill allow for higher drilling speeds? Also, it probably will be more efficient in terms of PCU, so that's another big plus.

1. Awesome video thank you. 2. Your test does not compare the amounts drilled over time, it shows yield over distance. i suspect the prototype can move farther faster without hitting the wall? having each drill type moving at its max drill speed for the same time would be an actual comparison over time. That said your test was very informative. 3. Endgame is a word that doesn't really mean what we think of it as, if an item really was an end game item we would spend all that time playing, find the item, use it once and then the game is over and we are done, lol. Late Game would be more accurate. PS: Ignore me I like to nitpick, keep up the good work.
@Beeblebum3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I agree on the End-Game, its pretty much a misnomer - I just adapted the naming from Keen for it. End-Game blocks also would make the blocks itself pretty useless as there was no point in collecting them. 😅 On the other hand.. the drills had the same amount of time to drill, while over the same distance - so don't these 2 comparisons hold up? I might do some other tests in the future where we compare a fixed time and set the max possible speeds for the drills.
@armastat3 ай бұрын
@@Beeblebum to illustrate envision two tests, one where the drills go same speed forward, like yours did. the 2nd test do the same but allows the drills to go at their max speeds forward. with max being just short of ramming the far wall and stalling (or exploding). run each test for the same amount of time. the first test does give an answer of which one collects the most ore per distance drilled. The 2nd test of course does not compare amount per distance since they travel different distances. but its running for the same amount of time. in the second test one drill will collect even more ore than it did in the 1st test. (I am assuming for this argument that the New drill will outperform the older one). However this may not be true. It could be that while it collects more ore per foo the older one may penetrate the ground at a faster rate. and thereby get more ore than the new one. Keeping in mind that sometimes what you want to do it get rid of voxels as opposed to collecting ore.
@BlackCrypt3 ай бұрын
Great video but I have question - why would you need to drill that much mats at end game?
@Beeblebum3 ай бұрын
The drill is only one of the prototech blocks, you will need a lot of resources to build the other ones - for example Magnesium for the prototech panels. And, honestly End-Game in Space Engineers really does not exist in my opinion.. I think the game or save you are playing ends when you run out of imagination and things to do. lol
@MrTrilbe3 ай бұрын
@@Beeblebum End game starts when you have a jump drive equipped ship and the ability to land on planets, it's at that point the game provides nothing new, the end of the game is when you get bored of it, end game =/= end of game. Hopefully Prototech will end up mid game, in the long run anyway, and within 10-20 mins of release there's probably going to be a mod to make the missing parts constructable anyway.
