I agree. The improvements to power efficiency, for example, are pretty huge. *130+* watts consumed by the CUH-1000/1100, *110+* watts from the CUH-1200, and less than *90* watts from this Slim model. That places it close to the PS3 Slim/SuperSlim in terms of wattage!

rulewski33 Not true. 190W is the maximum amount of power that the console's power supply can handle. How much it actually uses, though, is much smaller. For example, 2006 PS3 systems shipped with a goliath (for a console) 380W power supply. Did it actually use that much? No, at most it would use about 210. The PS4's ship with 250W power supplies. Again, they only use about 120-140 depending on which model you have.

It's good to hear it's cooler & quieter. Before the official announcement of the PS4 Slim some people reported it was much hotter and that the fans were louder in contrast with the original PS4. Kinda happy that DigitalFoundry made it clear to me!

The switch to a wired connection while controller is plugged in is a nice feature of the new controller. With the Xbox One controller I'd expected it would make no difference, but when I plugged it in to charge and continued playing I found I would play better, despite not really finding the difference in response tine all that perceptible. Nice feature to finally add.

+DRM Sparkles you still need and hdr tv and I think even the playstation does up scale to 4k on a 4k tv. The thing is the xbox one s up scales from 900p-1080p which looks blurry af (same for the ps4) but the ps4pro up scales from a 1440p-1800p with a very good up scaling technique that looks solid

Ive got the slim and I think its GREAT!!! Its not loud at all, I have run it all night into the early mid morning the next day before putting it into RestMode , And to my surprise It was Not hot at all!!! I like the Touch buttons. I've always been a Fan of the Slim version of PS's.. I have a Vertical Stand with Cooling fans On the way right now from Amazon Which with the fans going I dont see it barely getting warm! Only thing I have Noticed Is the Controller drops down from full battery down 1 block fairly fast. My PS3 controller Lasts LITERALLY FOREVER! I havent let it die all the way down so I havent clocked the actual amount of Hours. Which Really thats not a PS4SLIM judging but controller. I ran across the Gold PS Headset on sale for $50 so Im loving that. Kinda annoying no optical though.. All n All for the 239.99 I paid for the Bundle I think its really nice and well worth it. I'll be buying a xtra controller, and a modded controller next check. If I had already had a PS4 would I judge upgrade to the slim? Prob Not, But I had my Model Before this one Stolen out my jeep at wall mart, And Even though I like the Xbox1 S Alright, Im still a sony fan. I bought a Slim and put a 2 TB SSD instead of the original Runs cool quiet and processes like my computer. The only thing I didn't like were the number of USB 3.0 Ports on it. So going to upgrade for some ports but has ran awesome since D-one.

You can use a USB hub on the USB 3.0 ports. I run up to 4 devices off one USB port on a base PS4. (Headphones/mic, mouse, keyboard and a controller when charging it.)

Glad I've got the C chassis 1216 unit, full matte finish, as quiet as I'd ever ask for, still got the Toslink which I need for headphones. Reminds me of that final Xbox 360 slim that had the style of the Xbox one. It also got rid of the optical audio connector.

I don't see what everyone is complaining about with the design.. It's understated and clean, maybe a bit less striking than the first gen design. But seriously, who the f*(& cares what the damn thing looks like, as long as it's not enormously and bulky like the first gen Xbone!! PS4 Pro, with no 4K blu ray player though?! Now that's a no go!! I have to admit I’m not a big fan of the matt finish; although interested to see what the limited edition versions would look like. More so than XBOX, the size and energy reductions are a great accomplishment for what is to become Standard PS4 once old CUH’s have been discontinued. It’s only considered “Slim” relative to existing models. I thought not having the “TOSLINK” optical out would be an issue; most TV’s have DTS/DD decoders for audio channels which can process the raw audio output format from the PlayStation though HDMI via ARC. This can then be processed by your TV's decoder and passed through to your optical out at the same format, for me this allows just 1 unified setup for audio from different sources when playing Ps4, watching smart apps or live TV. This should alleviate peoples concerns about wireless headsets, Googleing the site "rtings" with the term "5.1 Surround sound passthrough" gives a comprehensive list of supported TV models. I don’t envisage replacing my CUH-1200/C-Chassis Destiny PS4 with either of the newly announced PS4 models anytime soon though.

The launch PS4 design is one of the best launch designs since the original Playstation. I know its a bit sharp on the edges, and the early gloss casing was fingerprint smudge magnet. But it was the right size form the start as well.

We're digital foundry paid for this article the only positive is that's it's quieter which is a positive. Only glancing over the serious issues no toslink is so bad which means no surround sound! And no high end headsets they forgot to mention that the controller battery still dies after at best 3 hours. AC wireless will not improve the PlayStation network! So will make no difference! Do not listen to these guys and do not buy this. Get an original PS4 with the upgraded parts or add extra money and buy a pro!

Reminiscence26​​ Only it's still going to run louder, and a little hotter than the slim. That's because of the finfet die shrink. The slim is just running more modern, efficient architecture than the OG PS4. Also, I'd much rather have that 5.0Ghz dual band WIFI, than some optical port. You can use the optical port on your TV. They're usually of slightly higher quality than the ports on the consoles anyway.

Yeah I don't even use the optical port anymore as my headset broke and 5ghz doesn't matter to me as I use an Ethernet cable. TLOU remastered absolutely makes my ps4 the loudest I've heard so I can't wait to test what it'll sound like after the thermal paste replacement

What is wrong with your launch PS4? Mine, that I got on launch day, is super quiet in most games and is only slightly audible in others. Rocket League runs quiet on it as well. The launch PS4 model is still the best. Touch sensitive buttons are much better than analog buttons in my opinion.

I write this in Nov 1 2023 I've been wanting to buy a PS4 second-hand for 7 ~ 8 years but each time something happened and financially set me back and putted me in a position that I was no longer able to buy one but now I finally can (don't tell to "just get a PS5" because that is still super expensive where I live and economy is horrible) ever since I first saw PS4 I was fascinated with its amazing design, the exotic and modern look of it really got me hooked, especially the white colour model (hands down the $€xest gaming console I've ever seen which imo was a hard spot to take after Xbox 360 Slim) it was a while back that through some memes I found out that PS4 is actually quite loud (I know, after all these years lol) and since I'm primarily a Xbox gamer I can't really put up with the loud fan as I'm practically unfamiliar with it what led me to this video was the idea of watching a sound comparison between latest OG PS4 model (CH-1200s) and PS4 Slim to see which one is more quite and is the difference big enough for me to ignore the amazing design of OG PS4 and going with the Slim or not and unfortunately I have to say that the answer to that question is Yes... as much as I hate to take a pass on the amazing design of OG PS4 (CH-1200 model in particular) but due to the less noise/heat production, smaller taken space, 5GHz WiFi and lower power consumption (don't really care about it but its still a plus because less power = less heat) I think I will no longer pursue the idea of only picking up a OG PS4 and not any model else💔

Can't beat the original in looks though. The sharp cut slant with the gloss on the side and the touch buttons inlaid; just beautiful. Glad I got the ps4 when I did just before they went all Matte. Also, quite frankly I don't even notice the fan noise anymore, just turn the volume up a bit and it's fine. Though I have moved into a bigger room recently so idk.

Gotnojams I totally get you - and I think it's funny that the two systems are lopsided the way they are. Still, next-gen Blu-ray is a big value-add, there's no denying it, and I think the Slim should be priced lower than its more capable competition. Sure, PS runs most multiplatform releases better, but it doesn't support UHD Blu-ray _at all_

Yeah but that only proves how shite the original was. It says a lot that the original can't support HD-R yet no model of the PS4 has that issue. That said I do think the One S is a good buy because I didn't have one before and it's a good value for money. PS4 Slim is just rendered in a terrible tight spot with the pro being not a whole lot more expensive and out in only 2 months.

Do you even know how HDR...sorry, Lighting works? It has nothing to do with HDMI input in the slightest, yeah it matters which TV/Console you're using but the means of displaying it are completely irrelevant to cable. The 4K upscaler in the Xbox One S is pointless as you are still only getting a native 720p to 1080p image, you may as well let your 4K TV upscale it.

Adam The Gamer are you fucking stupid? The new HDR feature has nothing to do with the ancient lightning HDR technology. It's for High Dynamic Range of COLORS. And yes, HDMI output IS relevant for the color output. omfg, do some research before spilling out this kind of bullshit. As for the other stupid comment, the XOne S upscaler is far better than any TV upscaler and the native image is not "720p", is whatever the game is rendered at. Most probably 1080p.

Its no difference really I mean seriously 4k? HDR? I have a 5TB SSD ps4 with 10 games on it its the same ps4 adding a little upgrade i mean look at ps3 fat and slim/super slim for god sakes. Yeah I had a 4K TV in our living room but this is not really worth it pro or slim but you have the freedom to decide so go ahead if you want it. But in my opinion just buy the original ps4 and also buy more memory for that ps4 of yours.

Mass Effect Andromeda is going to run at 30fps on regular and pro, for $100 why pay more. especially considering a vast majority of people don't have 4k TV's. The pro is marketed towards a very small market right now.

I respectfully disagree with you, but as long as you enjoy your S it shouldn’t bother you that other enjoy something different. Exclusives can swing people with limited budget to one console, especially since PS4 was more powerful and cheaper of both consoles at the launch. 2 free games/ per sony console with PSN plus from precious also lured lot of old and new fans. They strategically some remade PS3 exclusives for new PS customers. 4K blu-ray player isnt that much of a loss when you realize that streaming tends to be a better option. Also remember PS4 Pro with Red Dead 2 bundle was also $100 cheaper then Xbox One X bundles. You can always buy a $100 4K Blu-Ray player separately if have the need.

For the noise tests - was the new slim console compared to a brand new older model or one that had been already in use for a long time? This weekend, i opened up my 2 year old ps4 and cleaned the fan with compressed air and the difference in noise made was very significant.

SO in other words they added a new Cpu that has lower power consumption ... and can be overclocked in the future for the HDR feature ... ok ... but i will be getting the Pro , because as of now it is the CHEAPEST VR DEVICE that will be available (also that 4K , SuperSampling AA and constant frame rates of 60 for older games makes it a must buy ... Drive Club in 60fps now that's something) The main thing that bothered me when i got a PS4 was : 1. Wanted to finally play my PS1/PS2 games on PS4, in theirs promised emulator with native 1080p60fps ... was introduced with a paygate to rebuy 5 year old games again for 30$ ... lulz are you serious 2.You know what i miss in PS4 games... physical manuals. Games In this gen,became 20% expensive and you would think they would add those... but nooo , not even a 30 pages long manual ... not even a eula like it was in PS3 3. Bluetooth signal antenna is broken, that when you use PS4 Wifi it halves the signal strength and makes your pad lag ...so from a working ps4 pad that works perfectly from 3 meters, when you use wifi you only get like 600cm ... ouch (quick fix is to : Disable this broken ass Wifi with this awful design flaw and simply use a Lan Cable ...) but still your pad will lag IF your Bluetooth signal will be over saturated (or if the PS4 in the background will download something) So maybe thats why they redesigned the Pad ... still curious if they changed the Battery in it for something more powerful and if they fixed the Lag/Signal loss

But lots of receivers back then were those bunch of cables (forgot what they're called) and some Optical inputs. Besides, why buy a new one when your current one ain't broken. Still have DTS and DD Sound. Sure I'll miss out on the the extra bit rate on the New sound (DTS-HD MA - DD- HD/DD Atmos). I'm perfectly fine with it. So I don't really see it disappeared in couple of years.

As already stated the original PS4s were loud, hot, and power hogs (if you owned a CUH-1000/1100), especially when placed next to a pleasantly-silent Xbox One. This console not only remedies that but also makes production much cheaper for Sony, which is what is allowing them to sell both this and the more powerful Pro alongside each other.
