"‘It is heavy carrying around that raging sense of injustice" Whoa Mae I felt this in my bones. I related a lot to Fortune's Mom story - mine asked for forgiveness from me a couple years ago via email and 'didn't need to talk about it again' so I'd been feeling sort of cheated that I didn't get my pound of flesh and really tell her ALL the ways she hurt me, while she got to just shake the Etch a Sketch and run away. But this ep made me realize that's just breaking MY spine carrying that around. Love you guys and the pod!

I cried of laughter at the button factory part 😂 did anyone else ever learn the bumble bee song? I really enjoyed the forgiveness section, I sometimes really struggle with forgiveness at the same time I've had situations where I've forgiven people so many times/given too many chances. It's really good to hear other people talking about friendships ending, sometimes being able to forgive but not wanting those people in our lives. I feel like it's something people don't always talk about a lot. I like this quote "Forgiving isn't forgetting, it's remembering and letting go" I really like Sarah's take that if you can't forgive it can feel like you're failing but if you don't feel it you just don't

Another great episode, thanks Handsome Pod! After listening I was just thinking about how my own understanding of forgiveness has changed as I get older. I remember in university a Buddhist monk came to speak to a class I was in and much of what they spoke on was forgiveness. At the time I remember thinking that the whole idea made no sense and that it was a way of letting someone who had wronged me off the hook for what they had done. Over time what I have grown to learn is that all the anger I was feeling wasn't hurting that other person at all. My lack of forgiveness wasn't changing their behavior. The only person being hurt was me. So, I learned that (for me) there is a difference between forgiving someone and excusing their actions. Those are not the same thing. I learned to say, "what you did was wrong, it will never be right, never be ok, but I forgive you," because it gave me permission to release all the anger or sadness or whatever I had been holding. It allowed me to stop punishing myself for what they had done by constantly reliving it though how awful I felt. As to true, 100% deep forgiveness? It's something to aspire to I think? Anyways, that's my 2 cents on it... also as soon as Fortune started with "hi, my name is Joe..." I immediately finished the sentence with her, lol.

Watched this podcast the other night, and laughed at Tig and Mae, who had obviously never been to camp. Even though I hadn't heard it in fifty years, I remembered all the words to Bob at the Button Factory. Kids love any song that comes with repetition (rather than rhyming) as well as actions. Darned if I didn't go to work the next day (I work in a Kindergarten class in Southern Ontario), and the music teacher presented our next song - of course it was Bob at the Button Factory! The kids loved the last bit where you try to sing with your tongue stuck out, and the boss comes in and asks "Bob, are you busy?" and Bob says "YES!" Fortune, you have a new fan!

I heard a different version of the bird story. He forgets to fly south, and he's frozen in a field and can't fly. Then a cow (horse? dog?) takes a massive dump on him which horrifies him and convinces him this is the end. But he realizes he's now warm and comfortable and can move his wings again. He's so happy he lifts his head up and starts singing, which attracts the attention of a cat who promptly comes over and eats him. The moral of the story is if you find yourself in a shit situation but you're doing OK, keep your head down and your mouth shut...(I'm pretty sure when I heard it it was in the context of a corporate/office situation...)

Well that brought up some memories. I sang the "Joe" song at camp. "Hi my name is Joe, I work at a button factory. I have a wife...two kids. The other day my boss came up to me and said, Joe are you busy? I said, no. Push this button with your right hand." Action: Pretend to pushing a button with your right hand. This was one of the favourite songs. We would repeat the verses adding and extra body part each time, accumulatively. Our left hand, the L foot, the R foot, our head, our tongue, and last our bum. All us kids would be moving all our bodies all over the place while singing with our tongues hanging in and out of our mouths. Being a kid under 12, we thought it was hilarious! Definitely got the wiggles out around the camp fire before we called it a night. 👏
