Mini splits would be a good option for your big shop. Or if you can find an inexpensive package unit. I was gifted a 3 ton package unit that I am using for my insulated shop.

@@DarbinNotes I am busy re-organising my house and have this one drawer, with things I started sewing from before my almost 30 year old daughter was born lol. I actually want to finish 2 jackets as they would be quite retro and would fit her and she loves those old clothes ;-) She has already pinched my 40 year old Brazillian leather boots, burgundy, very classic cut and she loves showing them off ;-) So I will use that as an excuse that I left those sewing projects for a legacy lol

The outlets will be more useful if they are about 4 feet off the floor. That gives you the option of having lower cabinets/drawers with a countertop, or even a wall-mounted bench.

Heartily second the Mitsubishi mini-split for your larger shop. I have one in mine and it is excellent. When I was initially planning my shop, it was suggestged to use window air conditioner/heater but not in a window. It was suggested to mount it in the wall rather than take up your window space which, in turn, shuts out light. Your smaller shop would be ideal for using a window a/c (hopefully heat as well) unit but mount it in a cut hole in the wall rather than a window. Mount it high to prevent it from obscuring a work space. Just thoughts.

It's always good to have more than you want electrical points , above head height storage is a good idea for easy access to materials , the small lathe idea is a bit luxurious as it only a matter of walking to the garage workshop , in all you will have to wonderful workshops to work in .

Looks like the shop could use a skylight. That would be cool project that would make for great content also....but I cant wait til its finished and to see all the awesome projects this place will produce in the future.

I can't remember if you have had/used a scroll saw in your previous videos, but maybe that would be the perfect tool for your little corner by the front window, rather than a mini-lathe. You are so artistic and have such attention to detail I think it would be the perfect tool for your getaway shop. Or perhaps both:)

Wouldn’t a 20 amp circuit breaker be a better choice for the main power switch in your shop? (Unless there’s a breaker already on the circuit feeding your shop)

May I make a suggestion? rather then dedicate a window for an Air Conditioner especially since the walls are open (even if not, it's an easy fit) I suggest cutting the rear wall and installing a small A/C in it. This leaves the window free to open for fresh air, as well as allowing full light from outside to wash the workshop. Just a suggestion, and in no way meant to criticize your work, which I must say I enjoy watching. thanks.

A mini lathe? I thought this was to be the 'clean workshop' without sawdust etc.? A workbench would be lovely by the window.
@DarbinNotes5 жыл бұрын
Haha, that's true. However a lathe makes big shavings (not too much fine dust), and with a shop vac right there it would be easy to clean up. I haven't decided yet. Just figured it would be so nice to be turning there by the window...

Shop looks really good. How big is it? Did you run 240VAC circuit for the air conditioner? You always have great vids!
@scotttovey5 жыл бұрын
In the US, window AC units are 110VAC and can be plugged directly into a standard outlet.
@btd25165 жыл бұрын
The bigger window units like she might need are 240 volt. We used one that size for about 4 years. It was about 11,500 BTU and we used it in the living room. After a while we got tired of having to turn up the TV so loud to drown out the ac, we finally got the broken central air replaced.

Perhaps something like www.bigassfans.com would be an economical way to cool the larger workshop without the extra cost of an AC system. I’ve walked under such a fan a few different times and the temperature change is dramatic.

You have discovered the Rule of 90/90. The first 90 percent of the job takes 90 percent of the budget. The last 10 percent of the job takes the other 90 percent of the budget. I think it's a corollary of Murphy's Law.

Linn, it looks like you are just trying to reproduce what you had back up in Oregon - a power tool shop and a hand tool shop. But you now have a much bigger shop area than you had in your previous location. Why divide stuff up? Why have a huge nice fancy lathe in one shop and then have a redundant small lathe in this little shed? Redundancy reduces efficiency. Why have a separate shop space at all? Can't you fit everything in your new, much larger location? You aren't in Kansas anymore Dorothy! Oops, sorry, Oregon anymore Linn. Embrace your new reality, don't try to remake your old reality. Give the shed away, get AC in your new shop, set everything up in one location, and build stuff, instead of multiple shops. Use the shed to store materials. - Just a suggestion...
