Rare Gas-Powered Circular Saw [Rescue]

This rare 1964 Homelite XL-100 gas-powered circular saw arrived non-functioning. Initially, I thought it was just the spark plug that was the issue as I could feel the shock if I held the plug and turned the engine over. The real issue ended up being the dirty points underneath the flywheel. After that, the saw ran just fine. I did clean the points after sanding them, but I need to grab some needle files for next time as sand paper is usually too aggressive. I plan on doing a complete restoration on this saw at one point, so my main focus was making sure it would run first!
It cuts well and quite fast with a new 8.5" blade in it. I have wanted one of these for quite a while!

I was 6 when that saw was built, and I've been a woodworker all my life, and I've never seen or heard about one of those. Pretty cool jobsite saw from the pre-battery era.

I was thinking that technically this would be better for certain jobs in the wild, where transporting aggregate+ electric power tools is hard, or job site chances a lot, so weight of motor in saw is worth it. How ever that thing looks bit hazardous with that blade guard being so slow to return and wont that thing have ridiculous kick.. up? if blade is twisted even a bit?

Hellsong89 As an active carpenter, I can say most companies would rather bring out a gas powered generator than a gas powered saw. I think it was most likely for pre battery mobility.

VERY impressive. The best thing... no exhaust smoke from a 2 stroke motor.. Homelite got famous for their 4 stroke boat motors in probably the late 60s. My grandfather had one that he cherished . You make this look easy.

I am extremely envious. I haven't seen or thought about one of these saws for years. My father had one & used it to build a cabin along a river in the early 70's. You might want to tune that guard up & dial in the retracting spring & ease of return a little. I remember him referring to it as "The Widow Maker".

I have a two stroke drill, 4 speed gearbox. Put the chuck on the output you need, the other 3 also spin. A wonderful toy, I can't think of a practical application for it though these days.

A small project takes months at an hour or so per day, a living nightmare.

According to Homelite it came in two versions, the XL-100 with an 8 1/2-inch blade and the XL-110 with a 10-inch blade, they stopped making them in 1966. It was basically the XL-12 chainsaw without the bar.

Charles Actually it is based on the Homelite XL101 !!! Same saw only with a chain !! I have one !!! Dad bought new in about 1964 and passed it on to me 10 years later when he bought a new saw...I still have it !!! But it has not been run in 10 years !!!

Using ether on a 2 stroke engine is asking for problems...like blowing out the crank seals or damaging the reeds on older engines. On 2 strokes it also washes the oil film from the cylinder walls. Dribble some mixed fuel down the carb instead. For everyone else--- Several manufacturers put their engines on all sorts of equipment. There were post hole augers, drills, cut off saws, etc., and in some instances, numerous attachments were made for a single engine. Last time I checked, it was still possible to purchase a brand new 2 stroke drill from Echo.

For a farmer/rancher , working around an outbuilding with no power available, or building plank fence down the road a piece, it would have been a handy tool. In the 1970's a generator with enough power weren't cheap, and battery tools weren't available yet. The rechargeable battery killed the market for the thing. Also, the 80 volt tools now have more power with a lot less weight.

For the folks that have never heard of a gas circular saw? Go to your local fire department they'll have a couple on one of the trucks. When you need to make a hole and don't have time to use a axe they're life savers.

Billy Hager Lol, yeah, where years of dirt and grime is built up, you just spay lubricant on it and that's all there is to worry about, I can tell you aren't a mechanic.....any good mechanic would have completely dismantled the dirty and grimy saw and would have properly & thoroughly cleaned each and every piece before trying to start it. It just makes sense that when you take it apart you properly & thoroughly clean then entire saw before spaying lubricant all over it and starting it. Not only that, he had the air filter off and didn't take any precautions to make sure that any dirt and debris didn't make it's way into the carburetor, which some did, you could see the dirt inside the breather housing, which could have been sucked right into the carburetor, which surely wouldn't be good for the carburetor or the rings! lol

At 6:33 I noticed you were using a 2 jaw puller, I'd be VERY careful using one of those on a flywheel i've had a 2 jaw puller brake a few flywheels in half. The best way (whenever possible) is to take out the starter dogs and use a steering wheel puller in the holes (this moves the pulling force closer to the center of the flywheel). If you have to use a 2 jaw i'd recommend grabbing the flywheel below the magnet and it's counter weight (this is the thickest part).

Probably fitted it with a masonry or metal-cutting blade at a construction site like they do quite often today.

at an old job I worked at, we had a few gas powered 1" drills used for augering large holes into telephone poles. To today's standards they were pretty weak for torque, but they were built to last. Easily 30 years old and still worked. Those these kind of tools are big and bulky, definitely a throwback to a time of pre-cordless times. Though you have to wonder, if it makes more sense to lug a generator or compressor than to handle a big tool like this all day.

likely, I no longer use skillsaws that have questionable guards, Had one jam up on me in the rain and bounce off my steeltoe when I put it down. A 1\4" closer and i'd probably be missing a toe. I also have a thing for saw's with electric brakes now :) How's it for power? better or worse then a 13 amp saw?

Nice find. I got a buddy who has an old homelite 14" chainsaw. Found it in a junk pile. Just cleaned the carb and put some gas in it. Fired right up.
