Hand Tool Rescue

4 жыл бұрын

This restoration is on an antique check/cheque perforator made by the B.F. Cummins Co. This tool was patented in 1918 and the original patent document can be seen here: patents.google.com/patent/US1...
The perforator was recently sent to me by a viewer and was interesting enough to try and restore right away. It was used to cancel checks by marking them with the word "PAID" and the date.
I decided to give the tool a brand new coat of japanning as that was the original finish. I ended up using 3 coats of japanning on all castings. The punch plate for the perforator was made out of aluminum and most of the pins were incredibly stuck. For some reason, the pins are surrounded by an incredible amount of solder, for no discernible reason. The brass rings help index the proper date to perforate the paper and must have been an absolute nightmare to machine. I had to nickel-plate a bunch of parts for this machine as well.
In the end it worked well and I wish it could do letters as well as that would much more fun!
I would like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

1 I bet it originally didn't use much lube so the checks wouldn't get oily. 2 The pinstriping idea is fantastic 3 The fact you taught that perforator to spell is amazing!! I hope everything goes well for you in the land of genuine seal skin bindings as well as here in Alberta.

Hands down my favorite restoration channel... YOU ROCK!! I especially appreciate the fact that you continue to find interesting things to restore... while everyone else is doing electric fans and power tools, you bring us a freaking check perforator?? I didn't even know these things existed! Beautiful work (as usual), wonderful sense of humor (I just about lost it when the cookies came out of the oven!), and wonderful attention to detail... I recommend your channel to all of my friends! Oh, and because of you, I bought a gallon of Evapo-rust! That stuff really works!

Nicely Done HTR! Your Japanning technique is in my book to try. When you think about it Banks were the only ones who could afford such a machine back then, the rings, casting/machining, accurate pin plates all pretty cutting edge back then during the 1918 Flu epidemic. Had the nightmare back in the early 80's to repair a Check Writing machine (had letters too)...so intricate mechanical processes and a nightmare to get apart. Had to weld a thin SS cam plate and grind it flat and polish, then put it back together...sheeze..I feel your pain with the pins. Thanks, a Fun, timely and interest...Great episode! Stay Safe.

Another brilliant video and your combined sense of humor and showing how to get it done is great. As someone who is currently recovering from COVID 19, it is these types of videos from yourself and others that really help in times like this. A few questions though: 1. Nuts or no nuts in the chocolate chip cookies? 2. Has the workbench of flaming death self ignited yet? 3. Has the workbench started walking around on its own (have to believe there are enough organic compounds in the bench, it is becoming a sentient life form)? 4. When you pulled the plate from the pins, were you thinking to yourself "Oh this could be a bad idea"? Hope you continue to be in good health and thanks for all the fish!

Beautiful restoration ! I'm not sure I'm comfortable with calling this an antique, since I used one of these in my first job out of high school. Of course my body does make some of the same noises that the bolt did . ( would we 40 help ? ) loved the pin strip technique . Stay healthy , stay safe .
