Roy Underhill is the treasure of the woodworking community. I can't wait to return to Iowa in 2019 for Handworks again. It was so much fun in 2017. Thanks to all the vendors who put this great show on every 2 years, it was great.

Total immersion in all things traditional woodworking. Roy Underhill sets the tone for the entire group. If you didn't find it there, you weren't looking good enough.

I always see Roy in a different dimension. I feel every now and then he peeks his head through his 4th dimension so we could understand what he is saying. And we always try so hard to enter that dimension where he is. He talks to philosophers and craftsmen from hundreds of years ago. He speaks for them, he is their voice. They talk to us through him. I am not talking hocus pocus here.

Consider this when talking of old houses or old furniture that was made SO well. Maybe the reason we think that, is that only the well made furniture and houses survived. There were crappy carpenters and furniture makers then too and their stuff didn't survive.

Do you all know if they're having it this spring? My husband and I have gone every year since it started and I can't find anything in the internet for 2019. (?) Thanks!

I want to see Underhill try to make an interior on a steel yacht, make a wooden boat like a Lemsteraak or lay a teak deck. That's what I do daily and he would be so far out of his comfort zone he'd never find it again. I've said it before and I will say it again. Underhill, Cosman, Schwartz and Klausz are one trick ponies. They know how to make a cabinet, a table or a chair and that's where it stops. They are not what I call true woodworkers. They are furniture makers. I've seen so many of them who thought they were shipwright material and they all failed. Just last week I sent one of them home. Another furniture maker who wanted to try his hand at boat building. I gave him a chance but after 2 days I told him to go home and stick with what he knows. They are all the same.

Gee, not everyone has the same interests. I would put up a College of the Redwoods woodworker against a wooden boat builder any day of the week.

Nico 76, you must derive great pleasure from looking down upon us all. While Mr. Underhill has delighted, entertained, taught, and surprised me each and every time i've encountered him, i've had but one experience with you, and let me tell you, it is not the bushel of joy that sends rainbows flying out of the clouds, no sir. It is more like the sound a sharpened saw hitting that wee pin nail you forgot about in your effort to visit the Mystic boatbuilders of yore. I certainly hope you finally find that one apprentice you can brow beat into total submission, i hear there is great appeal in that position. May the wind stay at your back, and the seas be fair, so as to take you far away from the likes of me, and the followers of a true wright. Now we sing~!~ We are sawdust, we are shavings, and we have to get ourselves back to the hand planing.
