In this After Effects tutorial, we’ll place some text, trace over it using the Pen Tool, adjust the path, use a simple Trim Path effect and animate it to build out a handwriting effect. Lastly, we’ll use a track matte to mask the handwriting effect to any type that we want. Thanks for watching!

I really appreciate that you recorded the whole process of the pen tool - people can always fast forward or skip, but it allows us to see your process a little deeper in the mundane where most tutorials just assume you know how to do it. It allows us to see your thought process on something like that, and that's more valuable than you probably know! If anyone is wondering, the parts where you wish there wasn't that hang-nail for "g" or "R", or "k"... Maybe play around with key-frames and the stroke-thickness on those parts! Nice video! The way I first learned this was slightly different: 1. use the pen tool on the text layer 2. add the "stroke" effect 3. increase brush size said effect to hide all original text 4. set "paint style" to reveal original image just for anyone else trying

Hi, how do you set paint style ? When i follow those steps from video, in the end product I only get my stroke rendered with the color of the stroke and not the original png image below.

I followed this tutorial but did something else to reveal the text. I had to animate a text with a drop shadow, so that alpha matte thing wouldn't work for me bc the text would end up being flat. I did the following: Once the stroke was animated, I added the "set matte" effect to the text layer, and on the "obtain matte from layer" I selected the shape/stoke layer. then, this would act like a mask, revealing the text, instead of being a single flat color above it. Great tutorial, thanks a lot, it was very useful.

Awsome tutorial as always, about lettre g and e issue there is another way to make this animation by selecting the text and adding masks with the pen tool and not using a single one then go to effect tab and look for stroke in the stroke effect tab select all masks and change some options there and your good to go.

You're right. I always struggle with how much I should add to a tutorial (add even more time to my videos) vs. leave out something that could be useful. Lots and lots of masks are always helpful in a situation like this 🍻 Thanks for the comment!

I'm guessing for those bits where the stroke gets parts you dont want yet, you could shift the width of the stroke for that portion? So it narrows for the finer lines and then you can widen it out again for the thicker lines?

Thank you so much for this video! It took me five hours, but even though I have never even opened After Effects before, I was able to animate my text! Sort of! My font is very loopy cursive, so I did each letter individually like you recommended. Followed all the steps and got to where you bring the text on top of all the shape layers and add the Track Mat - "alpha mat". When I do that, my text no longer animates and basically disappears. I can see that it is animating because little dots and pieces of the text appear. Can you please help me complete my animation!? Thank you!

Is there anyway to create gaps in between each stroke? My text is made up of small straight lines, as if carved into wood. I want the animation to look like the strokes are being carved, so having gaps in between each stroke would help create this effect. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Theres a problem, the traking mat window never shows up if u got your layer on the very top in the layer panel. Much easier and quciker is to use "stroke" effect.
