I'm sure there are a lot of good electricians out there, but I've been called in a few times to clean up after some of the less-than-perfect electricians. Especially, they get lost and can't clean up a funky-acting circuit. I have done a crapton of home remodeling over the years. I am not a tradesman (and have never worked in those honorable professions). I have a degree in electrical engineering, so I am certainly more capable than a novice. We are currently getting a lot of home remodeling done. New roof, replace all windows, 2 bathrooms gutted and replaced, new floor, new doors, and new trim throughout. I am hiring out almost all of it. First thing I did when I moved into my house was sketch out the layout of the house with all the lights, receptacles, and other miscellaneous electrical equipment shown on the drawing. Then I went through and identified the breaker for each item. I have that sketch posted by the breaker panel. Now if I need to replace a fixture or do other electrical work, I can easily tell from a quick look at the sketch which breaker to throw.

Double-tapping circuit breakers is generally not permitted UNLESS the breaker has a terminal that is designed for two wires. The NEC actually states to use a short pigtail & wirenut if the breaker terminal cannot accommodate 2 wires.

I'm glad this customer was one that appreciates honesty. I service lab equipment and have many good customers like that. I've had some that complained about paying for 4 hours when I fixed the equipment in 5 minutes because it was a simple adjustment that they could have done. They just don't get that that 4 hours of driving needs compensated for even if the fix is instant. I could do like other techs and hang out for 2 hours and charge for 6, then they'd probably be happy.

A "handyman" installed two distant outlets at my mother's house and right away circuit breakers started tripping. They were wired to one breaker which was already overloaded. She told me about this later and he obviously didn't know what he was doing. I tore them out and replaced with properly wired circuits on new breakers. NEVER trust a "handyman" to do electrical.

One of the worst contractors I ever hired was a licensed electrician. Quoted three days to do a job, took 5 weeks, installed a light with no way to turn it on, then wanted to charge me to fix it. Stated that "you'll never even know I was here" in reference to the holes he would have to make in the walls to run the wires. I spent a month of weekends fixing the wall and ceiling damage in 5 rooms.

Coming up through the trades I used to do quite a bit of handyman work after my regular work day and on weekends to make ends meet. Watching you going through these peoples houses and the clutter and trash reminds me why I am SO thankful I was able to stop doing side jobs once I became a full time electrician that only works on new commercial and industrial work. I did make good money at the handyman gig though for that time in my life. 2 hour minimum at $75/hr from the moment I left my house including Home Depot runs and 20% mark up on total material cost. A long time ago I worked for Singer store repairing sewing machines. I had to go on service call to elderly ladies House. She stated that her machine just stopped working. 2 things, every single one of those breakers were already tandem breakers which in some panels is illegal. so i don't know how you could add any more. Also pigtailing hots in a panel is perfectly legal under certain conditions.

Alan ... some inspectors will flag you on the fill rate if there's too many wires and others insist that the panel is not a junction box so no wire nuts allowed inside. They say if you want a junction then add an external box and bring in a single wire. (wire pair for a circuit)

what's the difference between the GFCI and the trip on the board itself ? In the UK we are slightly different we have either RCBOs on each circuit or boards split with half protected by one RCD and the other half protected by another.

You all have an RCD for the entire house with a much higher fault current trip rating. GFCI's trip at about 5mA, compared to 30 or so with an RCD. (Don't remember the exact threshold)

When a breaker trips it doesn't stay in the "on position" it moves to the middle. It may look like it's still on because it moves so little but it's not. It will still require a flip to the off position and then a flip back to on so I can see why many people think it's just stuck in the "on position" after trip.

Yes - it is a common misconception that splices cannot occur in a panel. They can. What cannot be done is so-called "double lugging" (placing more than one wire under a common terminal) for neutrals. Two wires under one terminal of a breaker is also not allowed unless the terminal is designed to receive more than one conductor (Square D QO and QOB breakers accept two wires if needed).

Most places. Your main box is out side, to be able to be turned off incase of fires. Your sub boxes can be in the house or outside. As long as you have an exterior box. Those boxes are designed to not allow rain to get to the circuits.

You missed the branch circuits sharing the same tandem breakers. If branch circuits are on the same phase the amperage on the neutral side will double. You will end up with 40 amps on a #12 wire and 30 Amp on a #14 wire. It's a good idea to fix that when find it field because the last guy to work on the panel always gets blamed.

I have my fan running and my LED recessed lights on. When I turn off the fan, on it's own switch, my LED lights also turn off momentarily (and then come back on). Why??? I have a switch for my fan, and a switch next to it for my LED recessed lights in my bedroom. Any insight would be appreciated.

THERE ARE SOME BREAKERS DESIGNED TO ACCEPT TWO WIRES SUCH AS SQUARE D 20 amp breaker ( both regular and obviously twins) home inspectors get this wrong. always refer to manufactures specifications at least on UL equipment, and you cant go wrong. That stuff about reading instructions we learned in school goes a long way. NEC states this also.

Hell I met an inspector and a licensed electrical contractor. who both insisted that you did not need to carry both a neutral and a ground and whatever ungrounded conductors from a main panel to a sub panel. They had to do both a 120/240 service. And a high leg Delta service. All that runs between these panels is the neutral and the two or three conductors. And it's an overhead feed, so no conduit.

It doesn’t happen very frequently but it’s not all that uncommon either. Your multimeter will tell you what’s going on once you’ve pinpointed which breaker feeds the circuit you’re troubleshooting and check voltage from the terminal screw on the breaker to neutral/ground. I’ve been in the trade 26 yrs and I could probably count on both hands how many times I’ve run into that situation

Little rule when you go to your panel to look for a tripped breaker . Lightly run your finger down the on side of them and the one that is tripped but not in tripped position will kick all the way back . Better than following a wire with a dummy stick . Enjoying the videos I’m new to the channel .

I purchased a duplex last year and in one of the units, the plug on the kitchen counter was spotty and the plug on the wall down near the kitchen table did not work. I was told by the tenant that an electrician had been there twice and replaced the receptacle in the dinning room and it worked intermittently. I arrived at the unit after purchasing and interrogated the electrical myself. I found; with a simple tester, that the receptacles both had power to both outlets which made it obvious the common was disconnected or loose. I checked the problem outlet first and found it to be new and in good shape so I checked the next in proximity (counter receptacle) and found the common was corroded and burnt off (likely from resistance heating) stripped the wire back, installed a GFCI and everything works great. Took me 10 minutes to diagnose and repair what an electrician couldn’t fix in 2 visits. I’m certainly no electrician but I can certainly hold my own.

You can do that. You can wire nut two hots into a breaker. It’s considered one circuit. Nothing different than splicing at a junction box for power to a new receptacle.

My breaker panel has neutrals pig-tailed, is that a code violation? Before I bought the house the old 60 amp fuse panel was replaced with a 100 amp breaker panel. How can you run out of neutral spots, there should be enough for all the breaker spots, more even if there are two pole breakers.

It’s legal NEC 312.8. And with AFCI protection requirements, sometimes it’s impossible to trim out a panel without pigtailing the neutral pigtail coming off the AFCI breaker to extend it long enough to reach the neutral bar

The breaker handle position is not an effective alternative for a multi-meter.

@@Koda716 When a breaker trips it's designed to go to the half way position to signal that it's been tripped and sometimes has a red flag depending on the manufacturer. The first rule to trouble shooting is do the easiest thing first.

@@davidremillard4181 - that kind of thing was common place thirty years ago. I have a house where fully half the house was running on a single breaker when the house was built, fifty years ago... The original panel only had six breakers for the entire dwelling. I have had to completely re-wire the place to remove the original aluminum wiring and upgrade the panel to a newer one with 20 circuits and a sub panel in the addition with another ten circuits. Now I just need a new outside panel where the meter is.

It's a NEMA 3 panel. Outdoor weather resistant panel. NEMA 1 would be a indoor panel.

Should point out that some breakers are designed so they can have 2 wires on them but these Bryant breakers are not. With that said I use an olight and it is awesome !

I always put a little pressure, with my finger, on each breaker handle. If the breaker is tripped but the handle didn't move the handle will be mushy. Also, 2,3 or even more wires pigtailed onto a breaker is fine as long as the load doesn't exceed the ampacity of the wire or the breaker.

You should see OUR house! Tissue paper, wrapping paper, TP, AND paper towels within 4 feet of the furnace. It is an exposed furnace and there really isn't another thing to do. You have stuff to store and you put it where you can.

I'm not making excuses for a poor tradesman but I may have another explanation for what you saw at this job. If the electrician pulled the panel cover and traced the wiring back to the "apartment", and they saw the code violations that would have to be fixed, they probably notified the landlord and the landlord turned it down. My son is an electrician and is required to meet the electrical code or he risks his license. In this case it's not likely any tradesman were liable for anything if there were an accident after your visit, you just flipped the breaker back on. The electrician could have done the same but I can understand walking away from a mess like that.

Was replacing a basement window and frozen open faucet......was following the pipe searching for a shut off in the ceiling .......lights started flashing on and off.......found two separate wires in tight area that were just loosely wire nutted together .....home owner said she had some electric work done ....who ?
