This week we're waiting for new PACEs to arrive for Judah. We're sharing a little about how we made our new "offices" and progress game boards. (We use ACE curriculum and our children are in 9th, 7th, 6th, 4th, 2nd and Kindergarten, plus two little ones!)

My son in grade school did not fall into their "normal " narrow view of children. He was removed from class in a stright jacket he was humiliated in front of his class. I learned to mistrust teachers and we know better than the parents thinking. I wish I had home schooled him. Your doing great your children are happy and that's what counts. By the way he turned out just fine. Ps he did have some great teachers

maybe you can use minecraft for interesting learning. like, how many blocks do you need for building x shape. additionally, diamonds and such are randomly distributed so this might also be fun for statistics and probability learning. maybe something like building some electrics would also be cool. with capacitors and coils you can build integration and derivatives. and you have small and very large numbers too.

The book you talk about is compulsory reading at the University I got my Ed degree at. It is so important for all teachers to understand all children learn in different ways. The tragedy of our current school system is that teachers do not have the time, resources, support to provide the individual programs some children need, although I know all good teachers try. Kudos to you Andrea for recognizing the need to change things for Judah. I know this video is older, would love to hear how each of your kids are doing this year (2018-2019) You mentioned needing a direction with your videos... your talent and creativity at teaching both your children and your you tube family might be a good one.

I think that what you're experiencing isn't uncommon, but it can be distressing as a mom especially if it's your first time. The biggest key (which is still a struggle for me sometimes) is to trust that they'll get it eventually and go as slow as you need to. I think it's easier said than done when you feel you're going to be judged for doing it "wrong." There's a little book I like that has lots of fun ideas for reading, writing and math skills that I'll recommend. Just telling you about it makes me want to drag out my copy or a refresher!www.amazon.com/Three-Rs-Ruth-Beechick/dp/0880620749/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485655240&sr=8-1&keywords=the+3+rs

I get them from www.snapfish.com. I wanted personalized mugs for them so I used my PrintShop program to make their name in the font and color I wanted. After saving their names as picture files, I uploaded to Snapfish and had them made into picture mugs. We've broken one several times over the years but the pictures are in my on-line account so we just reorder a new mug. As we have new little ones I make new mugs for them, too.

Thomas does spend a lot of time with them after his school work is done; he also hangs out with Tom and I a lot in the evenings after the other kids go to bed. He's definitely moving into that more adult way of thinking that sets you apart for a time from the younger kids, though. His friends like to come over; thankfully none of them mind having little ones hanging out with them, too.

Sorry I know I'm a pest with all the questions but you are a pro. We got the home-educators getting started kit. It says to not let your child work above their age. Before we got the kit we had tested our daughter and she tested out of level 1 math. We ordered level 2 and she's almost done with the first PACE. Do you/ would you ever let your kid work above their chronological age level? Do you know why they shouldn't? We aren't sure if we should just let her keep going and if we don't what do we do until august when she starts level 2 work?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
If I were you I'd let her keep going. Asher is the same way. Eventually he "hit a wall" and had to slow down in math, but he's still working a year ahead in all of his other subjects and does fine. I'm not sure what the reason is for the advice but I'd feel totally comfortable proceeding as you are and just slow down if it ever feels necessary.

@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
Take lots of breaks! :) My aunt had 7 kids and she told me once that she liked taking out the garbage because it gave her chance to have a few moments to collect herself. When I'm feeling overwhelmed and start wanting to yell at everyone, I go get the mail or think up some reason to go the grocery store so I can have a few minutes. If I can't physically leave, I go in my room, shut the door and lay down for 10 minutes. So much of being overwhelmed is having so many demands and not knowing which way to go. Stopping is the best remedy because it reminds you that while it seems like these are all pressing problems, they can wait. It also gives you a chance to think through a plan of action so you can return to work with some focus. I have the luxury of having older kids to keep an eye on little ones, but in your case you can when you feel like you're going to freak out, put your little one in a safe place to play while you collect yourself. Even if he cries the whole time (I'm not sure what age your little one is) it still gives you a minute to walk away and regroup. And always remember that nothing lasts forever. Whatever you are feeling at any given moment is going to pass eventually and hopefully you can assess what's going on to make things work more smoothly going forward.

+Genevieve Carton That is tough. I remember with my first how hard it was because you're used to doing what you want when you want and all of a sudden you've got a little side kick that has a will of her own and nothing is simple anymore. I promise it gets easier. Half of it is accepting that your life is different now and it's okay. When you stop expecting things to go like they did pre-children (such as sleeping all night without interruptions, getting ready to go somewhere and not having a thousand hangups along the way or eating something without some little person begging for it) you start feeling better about life. Tom tells me to just plan that things are going to go wrong, the kids are going to fight and tattle, I'm going to be woken up 7 times in the night and then when it happens it's not unexpected. Somehow that' easier. Right now Sophia sleeps between us nearly every night (she comes in at around 3:00) and she's somewhat of a nightmare to sleep with. We've discussed multiple times (when we start complaining about it) that she feels so happy and safe right there between us and the day is coming when she won't want to cuddle with us.We know, it's happened 6 times before her. When that day comes we'll miss it so we might as well enjoy it now. Claudia is just the same age as your daughter. She's definitely getting to that willful stage. The other day she was being naughty grabbing things she shouldn't and she hit me. I said, "Hey, kid. You wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for me. I gave birth to you." She looked me right in the eye and said, "Stop it," like she didn't even want to hear about it! :)

We made a DVD for ourselves using the Kindergarten audio CD and flashcards. (For the number train, Tom used the number train cards to get the pictures, but then he animated it himself.) We did that back when we ran out of room to have a large bulletin board so I asked Tom if he could make us a "video bulletin board." We've been using it ever since.

Is Judah delayed at all? Very curious I think you did a test before and he was a little slower ? My son test lower at school also but is so much smarter than they actually see based on there curriculum
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't consider Judah delayed at all. Judah's a very smart boy, but he operates his own way. It was such a blessing to stumble across that book and have confirmation that it's just a personality type and it won't be changed. How then can we use his strengths to his benefit then? That's what we're trying to figure out. Tom had lots of bad feedback on his report cards in school but he's a very intelligent, capable man. Reading that book pointed out that he behaved just as you'd expect with his type of personality. I'm sure if Judah went to a regular school he'd be labelled with something. That's what is so sad to me. How many people go through life with the stigma of a learning delay/disorder when there's nothing at all wrong with them? We're going to continue to tweak our system with Judah based on his personality. To me, it's like me having a use a stool to reach things on high shelves when Tom can just walk up and grab stuff. I'm just making accommodations for who I am and fitting myself to the world I live in. (Hopefully the day never comes when someone decides that short people have a growth disorder that needs intervention!)

Andrea Mills I love the way you think! I always struggle with the answers I get from the school because I know my son is more capable then they make it seem and then they set him back by giving him work that's for a younger level even tho I know he can do things at his level. Very hard to deal with especially because he's so hyper they just leave things that way and I have to just pick up the slack at home witch I'm okay with I do it and try my best the only way I know how. Any tips on starting to read? I so badly want to be the one to teach him seeing how it looks like they aren't going to go any faster on that train at school but I really don't know how I've known how to read since I was 3 but when I ask my dad how he taught me he says he's to old to remember so I literally am lost because I've never taught someone to read or even thought about it until now

(this might be a stupid question but i just want to stop wondering what eye colors they have i keep getting so confused haha)
@TheMillsFamilyVlog

You're the second person to ask this in two days. Maybe there was something "eye-catching" about this video. Ha. Ha. Ha. Tom has brown eyes and of course I have blue. All of the kids have brown eyes, but most of them tend toward that brownish-greenish color rather than being a deep brown. Tom's brown gene is pretty powerful! Another thing _I_ think is interesting about our family genetics is the fact that not a single one of my children share my blood type while only 3 of them share Tom's. Five of them don't match either of us! I'm A-, Tom, Thomas, Asher and Claudia are A+, Judah, Justus, Eden, Solomon and Sophia are O+.

Sometimes he walks around saying, "I've got to build! I've got to build!" We found a KZbin channel that is awesome for explaining step-by-step how to construct buildings and things. Judah's in heaven. And as you saw in the video, he'd got an eye for design, too. He likes to sew. Last night he hung up a shelf we found in the attic that my grandpa had made him with his name on it. When he got all done he wanted me to come see it. (He used the drill to hang it by himself.) He had items attractively arranged on top of it and then I realized he had completely repainted the inside of his bed! He said he did it a couple of weeks ago, but I guess I'd never looked directly at it. One wall is a MInecraft scene that turned out really cute.

So his favored math skills will be the applied sort rather than abstracts.....my son Noah is like that. He's a plumber currently heading up a huge and costly job. He says he loves plumbing because "It's like a puzzle." He's amazing with the budget stuff, too, because it's applied. I never thought I'd see him factoring costs and wages and stuff.....but he's struggling with the people management. "MOM, I DOWNLOADED A BOOK ON MANAGING PEOPLE." Bwahahaha. That's my boy. The answer must be in a book! How interesting to watch our kids. I believe my Noah has Little-Red-Hen-itis like I do and trusting others to do it right and on time is a challenge. We've been talking a lot about the wisdom of knowing ourselves well. These meetings you are having with your kids, Andrea, are so amazing because you are involving them in self-discovery and involving them in self- improvement and correction. You blow my mind. I hope other young moms are being inspired.

You really are such a great mom. Will you make a tips for the first five years of child rearing video? I need tips. My son is 18 months and he's driving me crazy into everything! We don't use birth control and have been married four and a half years, but only one kid so far. I've had four miscarriage though... I love seeing your large family! I have so much hopes for a large family too.

I'm so sorry that you've had those struggles! I've had two chemical pregnancies in the last few months; it's the first time I've experienced something like that. I feel sad at the thought that I might not have any more babies! I think my estrogen levels are low so I've been using some herbs to bring them up hopefully. I can tell that there are some changes so we'll see what happens. Would you mind giving me some specific questions/problems you're having so I can know exactly what kind of tips to share? Thomas, my first, wore me out. He climbed everything, got into everything, broke everything, but it passes.

Who knows? I don't necessarily want them to, but if they choose work that requires it then of course they will.

It's not something he's planning at this point, but I don't think he's quite figured out what he wants to do in life yet.

Solomon doesn't like pants haha

He's got a bit of the perfectionist streak and if anything gets on his pants- and I do mean _anything_ -he takes them off. The other day our dog touched his nose on Solomon's leg. Solomon doesn't like "black, cold noses" so off with the pants. (This too shall pass!) I told him he couldn't go to Sophia's birthday party without pants but he'd put all of his pants in the dirty clothes (including his sweatpants and the pajama pants he'd been wearing earlier in the day.) He ended up wearing some of Sophia's jeans; they looked like skinny jeans. So funny! You could really see it in the scene where he's walking into Burger King on Sophia's birthday party video. He's walking across the parking lot with his puffy winter coat, snow boots and skinny jeans. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGbWpoKgm69srM0

Andrea Mills haha he has the most particular personality! That's what's so cool about his age group, their personality treats and phases come out so boldly since they aren't self aware yet

Speaking of pants......I used to let my son pick out whatever fabric he wanted, and I would make him some simple elastic waist pants. One time, he was probably 2, he picked out a navy blue fabric with red lobsters all over it. At the cutting counter, the sales lady said, "ooh! Lobsters will bite you!" I thought, don't say that! Well, I made the pants, but he wouldn't wear them for a long time. By the time he wore than, they were high water pants. Live and learn! LOL

how do you like those edison bulbs?

I enjoy how they look. I don't like the super bright LED bulbs so I like that these have an amber coating to make the light softer. We bought 3 the first time (all they had at Walmart) and 2 of them didn't work. Hopefully it was a fluke. We bought 2 more and they seem fine. They're the Great Value brand from Walmart.
