Dropping few lines to say thanks for the great series which are probably the main reason for me to get the cub. It arrived yesterday and after watching the series few times I think I've already assembled it :) The only thing I am doing differently is the wing connections and replacing the Dubros with Kavan 6" ones. On mine the covering looks much better with less waves and bubbles, I guess it's been on a more even moisture journey than yours but still needs ironing. Hope you don't stop flying it and posting videos and updates after you finish the Xcub :) Cheers and thanks again for the nice series!
@UngluedModeler2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Glad your Carbon Cub came undamaged and the covering in good shape! It’s a little frustrating to see the wrinkles but about an hour with the iron and heat gun and it all goes away. But frustrating to see for sure. Not a deal breaker! Those Kavans should be great!! Yeah I love this plane and have flown a couple more times we’ll make some more vids of it for sure. Once the XCub is done we will do a side by side comparison/flight video of them both also. The XCub is just MASSIVE haha. I feel the Carbon Cub is the perfect size it will fit in most SUV trunks with the seats down. Where as the XCub won’t. I’m gonna need to put the fuselage in my truck bed and the wings in Mary’s Subaru. So two vehicles for the XCub haha. Such a cool plane but man it’s just HUGE. You really have to plan things out for it’s size. No regrets building it though. Big project haha

@@UngluedModeler could be a good idea to get a small trailer for it by the way. Even if you don't go all-in buying one of those top gun trailers could be a good idea for storage and transportation. The Carbon Cub fits my Porsche Panamera with one seat down so it's indeed the perfect size for me, I can carry it plus the kid and wife together :)

That way you have a quality finished project. You and your wife are great teachers. That’s a cool little iron too. I’ve never seen one of those. Keep it up. I’ll watch part 2 later. Looks like you favor one of my favorite benchtop items, blue masking tape. For a quickie pin vise, wrap a length of it around the end of the drill shank to increase the diameter enough to hold it. You guys sure like working on stuff. Not enough of that in the hobby these days. You might enjoy getting an old kit built plane that seems worn out and doing a rebuild. I've done a few, it's really fun and you end up with a one-of-a-kind plane. I like glow but converting an old glow plane to electric is a common practice. If you check out the Stuart Warne RC channel he does that kind of stuff.
@UngluedModeler4 жыл бұрын
Thats a great tip on the tape for the small drill bits! And I have definitely tossed around the idea of doing a kit but there really are not many available anymore! Buying an old tired kit plane and restoring it is a great idea also. Thanks for the tips!

That's always my first step with a arf! I take each part and seal and shrink it after I check all the pieces for damage! I've been wanting one of those for my rcgf15cc Stinger engine! Instead of the pins I usually put my hinges in one piece and put a drop of CA on each one to hold it in place while putting on the control surface and ca them!

What is the tool actually called that you're using to iron the covering out? I'm gonna need one probably.
@UngluedModeler3 жыл бұрын
It's called a sealing iron. The one I'm using is the Hangar 9 one. Also don't forget the sock that goes over the iron. Without the sock it's possible to damage the Ultrakote. You will also need a covering heat gun. I bought the Hangar 9 one of that also. The iron seals edges and the gun shrinks up and tightens the big open areas. Good luck!

I just bought the Carbon Cub 15cc. Your videos are really interesting to assembly the plane. I have doubt with the hinges and the horns. Are really good to install it in the plane? Specialy the hinges. They appears bad quality. Did you have any problem in this two years since the assembly? Best regards from Spain.
@UngluedModeler Жыл бұрын
Thank you. It’s a great plane. The hinges are common fabric style hinge. The failure on these type of hinges is when people don’t instal them correctly. You HAVE to use thin CA so that the fabric wicks the CA down into the wood. It’s extremely strong. Once dry I was pulling on the hinge very hard and they hold very well. I had my doubts too. Just use thin CA and soak the hinges so it wicks down in. Oh and also make sure the fabric hinge is centered in the joint.

@@UngluedModeler thank you very much for your answer.
@pedmondsonni3 жыл бұрын
why did it ask you to drill the centre of the hinge slots?
@UngluedModeler3 жыл бұрын
Good question!! It says to put a small drill hole there to aid in the wicking of the CA into the fabric hinge and balsa. Without that little hole drilled sometimes the CA has a hard time wicking into the thin slot.

appreciate the heads up on the china hardware, would be a kick in the gut trying to do a perfect job and bust off a screw UGH! Waiting for this model to come back in stock, I would like to run a 4 stroke but there is no recommendation? Anyhow I will be watching. Thanks

I'm almost ready to start building mine and plan on using an old O.S. 91 Surpass four stroke, or possibly an O.S. FS 95. Either way, the 90 class four stroke should do the job. Expecting very scale flight character.

Loved the build series, can't wait to pick one of these up myself. Just a question, what's the largest prop you think you'll be able to put on it? I was wanting to go a 20cc equivalent electric setup with an 18" prop. Will I run into issues with ground clearance?
@UngluedModeler2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I'm running a 16" now and I bet you could swing an 18" but if you're planning on landing in tall grass you might be trimming some grass haha. Should be fine though. I barely nicked my 16" on the dirt on my maiden but I was slightly nose heavy CG and I was nervous on my landing so I bounced it lol. After that nervous landing no issues whatsoever. Great plane love the way it flies!

That’s normal for Ultrakote or Monokote ARF’s. The covering was better when I received it out of the box. Since I live in AZ the balsa has shrunk up over time just a tad and now the covering needs to be re shrunk. Very easy job with an iron and heat gun. I’m leaving it till the end of the build. I’ve done a couple spots and it tightens right up! Good to go!

Wrinkle city!! I can't believe they sell it like that. My knowledge is limited to foam though, so what do I know. I would have thought at that price point they would finish it proper at least. Lol. "Made in China" I suspect.
@UngluedModeler Жыл бұрын
Yeah lots of wrinkles. However. That’s part of balsa planes. Sure some companies are better than others but if you do balsa you will always have some wrinkles to contend with. Real easy to get it all smooth you just need a covering heat gun and iron. Took about an hour to get it all tight once the plane was complete. I leave it loose for building less chance to poke through then shrink once it’s done.
