Got sucked (or should it be suckered) into a cloud at Lachens, France in 1982. I was engrossed in watching the vario & trying to centre on the lift when the vario's bleeping turned into a shriek & I thought to myself "Brilliant!". Then two little misty wisps shot past, then total white-out, and it was bloody rough in there, I was rattled around like a pea in a whistle. Likewise I tried to keep flying straight, popping out of the side of the cloud about 30 seconds later (but it seemed like a lifetime)!

He managed to get out o.k. @@coryturner9140I flew hang gliders for 23 years, got sucked into rain cloud only once, and I agree it is very scary. Never been so happy to see the ground when I finally got out of it. Seemed like hours but it was only minutes. In the Canungra classic hang gliding competition years ago, a pilot got sucked up into a storm cloud. He threw his parachute in desperation and lived to tell the tale. I was talking to him as he was repacking his parachute on the veranda of Moriarty Hall in Canungra. He was adamant that it was something he never wants to repeat. My experience is that Pilots do take risks when flying in competitions.

I know nothing about hang gliding other than I enjoy watching the videos what’s the problem with going into the cloud other than if it was storming lightning potentially?
@MooSurfer4 жыл бұрын
Good question! Firstly it's illegal. We fly in VFR - Visual Flight Rules which means we must be in sight of the ground all the time. Secondly you very quickly become disoriented. There is no frame of reference. You can't tell if you're flying straight or even in a tight circle. This is because of centrifugal force. So it's very easy to become out of control without realising it when in a cloud. It's not a comfortable place to be! Of course there is the further issue of what happens if you are not alone in your cloud....
@Peter-ho8zs4 жыл бұрын
If this is real how was it absolutely crystal clear between the camera and himself even while in the cloud and why isn’t his cords or chin strap flapping in the wind and why does the view only change for the landing?
@MooSurfer4 жыл бұрын
Wow... no-one has ever doubted I'm real before Peter! Are you thinking green screen? The landing view was actually quite lucky - my gopro battery had run out and my friend who landed before me happened to film me on his phone as I landed.

Darren Brown Extreme Sports I wasn’t implying anything, I’m not a videographer or anything but when I use a trail camera in my yard to photograph the wildlife the pictures are awful when it’s foggy but yours are clear as a bell and when I wear a helmet while riding my motorcycle the helmets chin strap flaps like a blowing flag but yours is perfectly still. Well, you were lucky it hadn't really developed yet. I've pushed this 3 times flying HGs surviving, and just barely surviving one of those times. Barely. HGs can't dive anyway near fast enough to outdo the tremendous up flow near a rapidly developing system. Even sailplanes with speed limiting dive brakes have struggled diving at VNE speeds to escape the tremendous up flows when conditions start to OD. You twisted the tiger's tail and lucked out. Laugh about it, but realize the environment you're taking a 50 mph flying machine into is very easily capable of overpowering you.
