Stopped into Cafe Bella a couple years ago having no idea who owned the place and got very confused when the only decoration on the wall was a picture of Gino.

I love this video, 2:40 was crazy! But Asics should've gotten a translator for them. They're in NYC, must be loads of people who can speak both Japanese and English.
@i-never-look-at-replies-lol11 ай бұрын
but bro! he doesn't speak english! that means the rules don't apply to him and he's too dumb to know any better! as if it's any different in america than it is in japan! don't you know how that's how us westerners gotta infantilize everybody like that now? we treat everyone as if they're children!

@@andylowe447 1:48 "Things were definitely lost in Google Translation", so.. not fully communicating back and forth. It's a shit substitute for a real translator, especially with the difference in English to Japanese. Sure you can say words, but whole sentences.. nah.

That framed photo of the backside Ollie is at Stony Brook University in Long Island. I grew up skating there and I gotta tell you that bank was steep as hell, short, no tranny at the bottom at all. As far as I know Gino is the only person who ever did anything out of it like that. He also did a BS nose slide on the top of the vert wall. Most people just carved the bank without ever getting to the vert part. It had inside corners and assorted angle hips. I was the only one in my crew to drop in on it and get a lil edger grind on the top of the vert. But to Ollie out of it is totally insane and was unthinkable back then. They bulldozes it years back, but before they did the "Lecture Center" was the shit. Also had a three level pyramid all waxed up nice and tons of other great spots on that campus. Parking garages with Manny pads and curbs when it rained. Also had great live shows there. Saw The Ramones, Biggie, Siousie and the Banshees, They Might be Giants... many more. When I think of the spots there in the context of what skaters are doing nowadays my mind goes nuts with the possibilities. Hubbas all over, stairs, double sets, did my first handrail there as well. I'm stoked he has that photo hanging up. Gino was a local hero along with Ben Liversedge and Matt Bell. But Gino is still Gino.

Kinda crazy someone somewhere in the pipeline (Asics, jenkem, a fuckin local) didn’t get a translator involved; it’s NYC every language in the world is spoken here, it’s just kinda inconsiderate and alienating to willfully bring these homies around strangers and a new city and not do all you can to get em more fully integrated
