On a historical note, 9. e3 has been considered best; e.g. the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings in 2004 still gave it as clearly better for White. Some old books don't mention 9. Bd2; Nunn's Chess Openings in 1999 gave it as interesting.

There's also another von hennig from the Caro kann, that's a cool gambit too.

Well played. good recovery! Never liked playing against this gambit, back in the day: Maybe the simplest for white is 5. Qa4+ Bd7 6. Qxd4 exd5 7. Qxd5 Nf6 (Nc6) 8. Qd1! (Qb3 (Karpov) Na6 (Carlsen et al) and the white Q gets pushed around) Bc5. Black still has a bit of initiative, as white queenside is tangled, but probably not worth a whole pawn objectively.

as an 2200 fide player one mistake i see in ur games is that u reckon everything on calculating but sometimes the positions you go for are passive the e3, nb4 bb5, ke7 kf1 line looks good for white with nf3 g3 kg2 coming, the bd2 lines with kd1 look so much more passive

Interesting gambit. Now you could add it to the Queen's Gambit playlist. Have a good day. 😁

With your opening knowledge I'm astonished you didn't know this gambit as it's perfectly respectable. Warmerdam has a course on it and played it a couple of times in the Tata Masters with good results (from the opening, although things went wrong later). It's hardly some weird fringe gambit.

After 4. cxd4 i like to play 5.dxe6!? Sacrificing the knight. This is better for black if black ignores the knight and plays Bxe6, but it's still playable at my level. Maybe not against higher rated players. If the knight is accepted it's a blunder because of 6.exf7+, the king can't take because the queen hangs and if the king moves you have 7.fxg8=N underpromoting to a knight with check. It's dubious, but for an intermediate level player like myself it's worked out well.

@Ebobster I don't generally. This is just a specific line that I use against this one variation of the Tarrasch. It's not like I'm doing this every game.
