Thanks for sharing your experiences, it is appreciated. I live in Florida, USA. I purchased a used 18hp with 40 hours last year. Besides the corroded paint, my tilt spring rusted and broke. It took some time to find a good replacement. I used Yamaha 90506-20M27, not exact shape, but works. I'll have to check how rusted my throttle cable is.

It the throttle cable broke ,you can replace with yamaha 15hp throttle cable but remember to buy the longer one ( there are short and long type)

Good to know. I hand onto my 1969 Evinrude since I run in salt water.

A wire brush on a drill might make it easy to remove the old paint 😊
@chong7091
@chong7091 7 ай бұрын
If really want to remove the old (but good) paint, using a grinder with flap disc is easier. Wire brush on drill take too long to remove the good original paint, but can remove the peeled paint easy easy.

It is always easier to use a paint removing solvent. Sanding and brushing rarely work.

I had a 1988 Mariner 115, last year of the strait 6 for 35 Years and it was in better shape than that - I am in South Fl and flushing every time you come back in and hosing it down with fresh water (never open the cover and hose the block while hot) I was thinking of a Hangkai for an inflatable, not a chance after seeing all this corrosion -

The hangkai isnt bad except the paint😅. If one is planning to use only one outboard for 10 or more years , maybe is best to get a branded outboard because of their spare parts and services. For someone like me, if this cheap outboard can serve me for maybe 3 to 5years or more, it is a win and money well spent😁.

@@chong7091 Thanks. That hopefully makes it easier to find parts. I’ve owned a few 20hp Yamahas the past few years and they were fantastic, but they’re pretty expensive. I wish you good luck with the Hangkai. It’s an intriguing motor considering the price.
@chong7091
@chong7091 20 күн бұрын
@@scottgoodson5132 this is not a bad engine (beside the paint). The parts are way cheaper to by the hangkai original instead of yamaha parts. But if you have no choice to acquire the original cheap hangkai parts, you can always use yamaha parts , most of the parts are equivalent beside the conrod( the holes diameter is smallerfor hangkai compare to yamaha)

Your video is very good friend!! I am very interested in buying one like this based on your experience! I think it will be a good purchase!! Can you tell me what mixture of gasoline and oil I could use? I mean the proportion you use!! 1 gallon of gasoline for how much oil!! thank you
@chong7091
@chong7091 5 ай бұрын
For the first 10hrs the mixture should be 25 : 1 (gasoline : oil) , after 10hrs the mixture 50 gas :1oil. The above ratio is the recommendation of the factory requirement. For me, the first tank of fuel i mixed 25:1, then 2tank onward till now are 50:1.

It is not for saltwater. Mine 12HP same after 3 months. Unless you repain it b4 touching saltwater and change the Anode (i modified Tohatsu 9.8HP Adnode to fit it). For throttle cables, clean it every time after boating.
@chong7091
@chong7091 5 ай бұрын
For hangkai use in fresh water ,the paint problem will still happen but not as fast as salt water. My previous hangkai12hp also change the anode to tohatsu 9.8 one, but better to add additional anode somewhere on the body because the 12hp anode is tiny😁

Yes, All the Hankais are like this. I have the 6.5hp 4 stroke. Lives in salt water. Started to corrode after the first season. They do not prep the aluminum correctly at the factory for painting. They use 1 coat of black enamel paint with no primer coat. I took my outboard completely apart, sand blasted all the pieces down to the raw aluminum, prepped the aluminum for painting, heavy coat of primer, two coats of black enamel and two coats of clear coat. This season no sign of any corrosion living in salter water for 6 months. These outboards are cheap because they do cut corners (one being the paint). LIke he said the engines are bullet proof. The paint job stinks. @@denisdezan1309

The outboard is not bad you just need to "Engineer the Chinese out of It" I redid my paint job and changed out a few bearings and seals with quality German/Japanese made bearings/seals. I have a very reliable outboard that will last me many years. You just need to be willing to take the thing completely apart and reengineer into a quality halfway decent outboard.

@@dgomes1967 haha or just rebuild a classic 20-35hp OMC motor for 1/2 price and have more power, similar weight. But i hear you... lots of work on a brand new motor doesnt sound ideal but what can you do?
