Learn Korean: Months
안녕하세요! 한국어를 쉽고 재미있게 가르치는 한국언니예요.
Hello! This is Korean Unnie that makes learning Korean fun and easy.
TINKERAROHA, I hope I pronounced it right has asked me to make a video on months.
I thought it’s a good idea because there are several things that I can teach by making a video on this topic. And for people who already thinks you know all about this, still watch it because there is something you might now know~~~
Basically, for Korean months, you just attach the 월 after the Sino-Korean number of the month.
If you don’t know how to count Sino-Korean numbers, click on this video right here.
But what I want to talk about is this 월.
월 月 is a Hanja, which means it’s derived from Chinese characters, and it originally means ‘moon’.
It’s extended meaning is ‘month’ and it is used in lots of Korean vocabulary.
For example
월초 means beginning of the month
since 월 means month and 초 means beginning
and
월말 means end of the month
because 월 means month and 말 means end or last.
Of course, these two vocabulary are both Sino-Korean words. If you’re not quite getting what I mean by Sino-Korean words, go and review this video right here.
Now that you know the meaning of 월, it’s pretty easy. Just attach 월 after the numbers from One to Twelve.
But, there are some exceptions.
Be extra careful for June and October.
Many people think June would be 육월 because six is 육 in Korean and they attach 월 after 육.
However, in this case, you need to delete the final consonant of 육, so it becomes 유월.
유월.
It’s the same for October as well. You delete the final consonant of ten, 십 and it becomes 시월 not 십월.
시월.
These were the two points that I wanted to teach you today.
The meaning of 월
and the June and October exceptions
Now, assuming that all of you know months in Korean, I will organize them for you guys to review.
Janurary 일월
Feburary 이월
March 삼월
April 사월
May 오월
June 유월
July 칠월
August 팔월
September 구월
October 시월
November 십일월
December 십이월
This is the end of today’s episode of Korean Unnie. Did you find it helpful? Share this video with your friends that also study Korean and practice together! Practice makes perfect.
그럼 다음 시간에 더 유익한 콘텐츠로 만나요.
Then see you next time with another informative Korean video.
그럼 안녕 ~~~

What’s interesting in writing Korean date is you may easily know if it’s for example: September 2 or February 9. Unlike here in my country, we sometimes swap Date and month like 2/9/1992, this is confusing to me as I have figure out if they use dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy format. Unlike in korean dates, always like this for example. 1992연 2월 9일... or maybe 2월 9일. You can easily tell that, ohh! It’s February 9th.

WaitWhats GoingOn You don't need have to be half American or have any relation to an English speaking country in order to speak fluently. I mean, the Internet is a cultural mess (I mean that in a good way xD) and you get to speak any language you'd like achieving fluency at your convenience xD Ofc I have not a single idea how she achieved fluency. But I just wanted to let out my thoughts and experiences lol.

I'm exploring the pronunciation of words at the moment and decided to comment on the months. Apart from June & October which are pretty straightforward, I'm having a hard time hearing the 워 (whoa) sound in the word month (월) in those months that have a preceding ㄹ patchim like January, July & August. What I'm hearing is 일얼, 칠얼 & 팔얼. Or am I missing the whoa sound?

My knowledge is quite limited but I'll try to answer whatever I know. You don't have to use pure Korean when talking about months. If you do have to use specifically sino or pure Korean, the person teaching will most likely bring it up, though I do agree with you wishing there was more information given here. But anyways, I've also been told that sino Korean numbers are actually much more commonly used too than pure Korean numbers, and that this way of counting months is the most common way to do so.
