I feel bad for Hank that he feels embarrassed to say that he use to voice Apu. This whole video is propaganda for Hari's benefit and he literally villainised Hank for not wanting to take part in a documentary that aims to get rid of a character that no one had a problem with before all this. Rather than just agree to disagree, he instead dis respectfully made him look bad. This video is a complete publicity stunt. 0:56 pretty smug there.

I do wish we could see "Apu" recast and revisited. I accept Mr. Kondabolu's objections, but the character of Apu proved to be one of the most admirable citizens of Springfield, hard-working to a fault, guiding Lisa with her vegetarianism, and a faithful, devoted husband heroically taking care of eight little ones. Perhaps with Mr. Kondabolu's guidance the character could again offer positive representation?

Growing up as an American-Indian in the US, people referred to be as Apu a lot. It truly made me feel uncool, or "uncool" considering what kids thought was cool at that age. Right now though, I'm over it.

Or (/&) maybe they could have a new Asian-American, or better yet more than one family representing the entire diaspora. We need fewer token BIPOC characters (in all media, The Simpson's aren't alone in this) and more visibility of all of the types of people and stories in non-White/diverse communities. Not only does it reduce the risk of reinforcing stereotypes or racial profiling/bullying, etc, but we also get to experience new stories and perspectives, which is great for viewers! (I'm a white Brit who has always lived in the very diverse 'East end' of London, and I'm fed up of not seeing my reality on screen.)
@helenl3193
@helenl3193 Жыл бұрын
Sorry for getting in my soapbox there, might have gotten a touch carried away. My point though is Apu and Dr Hibbert (I guess, though I'm not certain that's his actual name?) are generally the only 2 non-white characters anyone can name, and maybe the bullying would have been less if there was more than one person who looked like Hari on TV at that time, especially if that person wasn't such a stereotype - even a mostly good stereotype. They didn't have to remove the character, they could have gone the better route that Big Mouth did, by recasting the role and actually having references in the script about racial stereotypes and code-switching, etc.

Wow, what a coup! Having Hank Azaria, the voice of Apu on “The Simpsons,” promote Hari’s show - this after Hari made the movie “The Problem with Apu”…! This is so cool of him, and shows he’s a real fan of Hari’s work. Spiffy!
@DafyddBrooks

@@DafyddBrooks The fact that Azaria worked with Kondabolu on this promo indicates where he stands, so which part of my statement do you disagree with, that Azaria was cool to do this, or that he’s a fan of Hari’s work? If it’s just that you feel Azaria should never have stopped doing the voice for the character “Apu,” you might try doing a bit of research as to why/how Azaria changed his mind about playing Apu (for instance, read the NYT article “Why Hank Azaria Won’t Play Apu on ‘The Simpsons’ Anymore”), then make an informed opinion. Or, you know, you can just respond reflexively to every comment you disagree with without putting any effort into understanding the context. Whichever makes you happiest.
@DafyddBrooks
@DafyddBrooks 8 ай бұрын
@@LB-ge8ih I disagree on the basis that Hari made Hank feel bad for not taking part in the documentary. Hank had no problem like the rest of the world with Apu but Harri wasnt having any of it. Hank was pressurised into conforming with the idea that Apu was a racist stereotype or be fired from his job. No one should be called disrespectful or racist for thinking that character isn't racist, but its something Harri lives off of. This video comes off more of a publicity stunt for Harri's benefit because he's blatantly capitalising on his documentary and wants to carry on with it . Harri wanted to cancel Apu and he couldnt have made it more clearer than at the end of his documentary. I'm allowed to say I disagree with you and anyone all I want and I dont have to sound smart about it mate.
@LB-ge8ih
@LB-ge8ih 8 ай бұрын
@@DafyddBrooks So… The racial caricature of Apu making an entire ethnic group “feel bad” is perfectly fine and acceptable, but one comedian making the voice actor doing that caricature “feel bad” is wrong. Gotcha. And again, if you do a bit of reading you might find that “the rest of the world” was not “fine with it,” YOU were fine with it. You’re giving Hari Kondabolu a huge amount of power if you think he can threaten Hank Azaria’s job. Try doing the research, Azaria has done multiple interviews about this very issue. Hank says he spent several years looking into the portrayal of Apu, and that HE was the one who ultimately decided to stop voicing Apu. In a statement, the executive producers of “The Simpsons” said: “We respect Hank’s journey in regard to Apu. We have granted his wish to no longer voice the character.” He was never pressured or threatened with being fired. And yes, this KZbin video is definitely “a publicity stunt for Hari’s benefit” - it’s a PROMO, that’s what promos are supposed to be!. Azaria VOLUNTARILY worked with Kondabolu on this promo, which pretty much shows that he supports Kondabolu’s work and doesn’t have hard feelings or feel as wounded about this issue. I really don’t think Kondabolu, who has far less fame, less money and less name recognition, somehow bullied/shamed Azaria into both stopping his voice work for a major character and then promoting Hari’s own work. Of course you’re allowed to say you disagree with me, but maybe also back up your assertions with evidence. I get that you liked the character of Apu, and you are unhappy that Kondabolu influenced Azaria in his decision to stop voicing this character. That’s a valid thing to say. But then maybe look at your statement: “I'm allowed to say I disagree with you and anyone all I want” - but you don’t give that same allowance to Kondabolu when he he disagreed with the portrayal of Apu. So… I guess we can both agree to disagree with one another, yes?
@DafyddBrooks
@DafyddBrooks 8 ай бұрын
@@LB-ge8ih Now you listen here and dont you dare twist things to make it sound like Apu was there to make an ethinic group feel bad and you know it. No one had a problem with the character for 27 years and if they did they would have said so back in 1990, but they didnt because there never was a problem. Harri was taking all this the wrong way, rather than having a disscusion about weather there is a problem or not, he decides there is a problem and theres nothing to argue against that on top of claiming he is not a cancell culture sort of person when he bluntly is. Hank respectively on 2 occasions politely responded and refused to take part in the documentary and wished Harri good luck. Harri was having non of that and treated it like a slap in the face. Hank had every right not to take part because it would damage the shows and the character Apu's reputation. And I beleive thats fair enough, especially when refusing to take part in a documentary that aims to cancell and get rid of the character. Its very disingenuous. In the age of of cancel, woke and so called diversity culture being implemented in media regardless of weather it serves the story or not is a huge reason why Hank felt he had to step down. Being made to feel bad that he voiced an indians voice just like many other voice actors do multple voices from around the world since voice acting began, you can bet he stepped down because of Harri and his influence over peoples minds to minipulate that anyone who disagrees that Apu was bad as a character or Hank voicing was bad too, is a racist. I'll give you this, sure I assumed he would be fired if he didnt step down the role. That is my bad an i'll accept it, but he sure damn was pressurised by the haters for being so called racist this whole time which is a tad extreme. Something that the internet has increased in the last 10 years in this woke mob culture. Theres no discussion anymore. As for the promo above, thats not a good excuse for this to be a publicity stunt, it means then that its fake and put it on, which is wrong. Its comes off like their freinds now so no one cant call Hank a racist. Harri and his doc certanly contributed massivley to Hank making the descion to step down. Thus Disney has essentially made sure all black charcters are voiced by black actors, when no one had a problem with any of this before. Hari and his views and the documentary is extremely bias to the whole subject aswell because he only depicted indian and indian americans hating Apu where as there are plenty of them out there that dont hate Apu and dont care but Harri never bothered to include them in his doc. That s why youtubers and others had to speak up and share their thoughts on the matter. Harri has a right to be upset by the culprits who kept calling him Apu when he was young, but is that the simpsons fault or those misbehaved lads? and what do you know, they were kids, its sadly what kids do and as if Harri himself never did that to others. Dana Gould made a very good argument in the case for Apu, everyone gets made fun of because its comedy, that what comedy is for. Danas more experienced than Harri has been and any comedian is entitled to make fun and talk about what ever they want. If their not, the theyve lost freedom of speech and creativity. Harri and all the people who have this so called 'problem' dont deserve to be a part of this industry and niether should they bother watching the simpsons. And Harri's points are massivley invalid, especially when he only focused on the so called bad things, he never once bothered to see Apu from a good perspective. Never did the show itself ever say "Inidans are silly people and should feel bad about them selves and culture", never once. I told you I disagreed, you never asked me for a reason, instead you behaved rather smuggly about that like I should have already explained my reasons in my comment in the first place?. you watch it mate!

people talk about "PC this," "woke that," "cancel culture..." Kondabolu and Azaria are a perfect example of how things work in the real world. Azaria didn't respond well to Hari's initial criticisms. he admits to being defensive. that's natural. but Azaria didn't pretend to be a victim -- he sat with the criticism, reached out to other people who agree with Hari, and slowly but surely realized he didn't like his own impact via Apu. this is what being an ethical person looks like IRL. it is not about ego, or the principle of "freedom of speech" or whatever. it is someone with a platform and some unique privileges (Azaria) listening to others, and getting respect for doing so. he could've said "fuck off, I'm famous, stop hating, snowflake..." instead, he learned something and pokes fun at himself for the past. that's wisdom.
