Though this song is from the early 80's, it is still relevant today. I live in a small town in Kansas, outside of a major metropolitan area, and I can walk out side on a calm weekend day and here the sounds of people target practicing. I have taught my daughters how to handle firearms at the range. We like to fish as well. A lot of people think that if you can hunt, fish and survive then you must be a country hick. Not true. Many of us are college educated, but most importantly we have common sense. Thanks for the reaction, one of my favorite songs. :)

My family are all farmers in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana, I grew up on farms, learning how to grow food, hunt and fish, and make some moonshine and home made smoke. I have a MS in electrical engineering and spent years designing communication systems for satellites/spacecraft. I now live in a small town in Missouri, and my daughters all grew up learning how to hunt, fish, grow food, and find the edible plants out in the woods. People meet me and think spoiled educated city boy. Till they hear me around my friends and that Tennessee accent comes out, and I start talking hunting and fishing. The thing is, people raised in the city are lost and helpless if things fall apart, people raised in the country get by.

Born and raised in the Deep South US (Louisiana), and this song definitely embodies a lot of what it’s like to be “southern”. Can’t speak for the younger generations coming up now, but my generation and older definitely learned to live off the land. We learned to hunt, fish and grow our own gardens. We had chickens for eggs, cows for milk. We learned to survive no matter what was happening around us. Learned how to be self sustaining out of necessity but now I’m glad I grew up that way. The world is so crazy and unstable these days that I get great comfort knowing that I and my family can and will survive no matter what because we know how to survive! Great song!

Grew up pretty poor and hunting and fishing was how we afforded meat. Had our big garden and learned how to make things ourselves. Great life skills. Even if it's trendy or "hipster", I'm glad young people are getting into craft made products and what most people consider obsolete skills.

The pride of country folks comes from city folks looking down on them as "hillbilies". Hank Williams Jr. is showing pride in the things the country folks can do that the city folks can't. Country people can be truly self-sufficient. And when it comes down to it, the city folks rely on those country folks to feed them and more. The country folks don't need to rely on anyone to survive.

We came from the West Virginia coal mines....yep, my dad's family were West Virginia coal miners. The term "country boy" is that he is poor and he is saying that no matter what you do to poor people they will survive, they know how to survive. This is a song against class privilege.

I enjoy your thoughtful comments to the music and lyrics on all your reviews. Two that I think you will enjoy; Roberta Flack - First Time Ever I saw Your Face and Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors. There's a live version of Coat of Many Colors, just Dolly and her acoustic guitar, that showcases her talent.

I love you guys. First you react to a Hank Williams Junior song, my favorite country singer, and then at the end you tell us to say a prayer every day because it works. Priceless. Hank jr., AKA Bocephus, has a ridiculous number of great songs. From country to rock to Blues to rockabilly, Hank jr. has great songs in every genre. Since you've done All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down, maybe you can do All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.

I'm commenting as I watch, and I had to comment again. You seem to think living in the country means living in a shack, or a cabin. You can be self-sufficient, like he was talking about in the song, and still have a nice place to live, and all the types of things you were saying you have in the city.

I think a big part in the pride of the south comes from the sense of being self sustaining. Country folk take pride in knowing that regardless of what happens, they will be able to take care of their family. They generally don't have the finer things in life or all the comforts of city living, but (as the song says) they will survive. And not to take anything away from city people, but just by the nature of living in the city, they become dependent upon a lot of the conveniences of city life and if the shit hit the fan and some of those conveniences went away, such as grocery stores or civil services, most of them would struggle.
