Something I've realized as a nurse who explains neurologic disease processes to patients and families in a way they can understand is being an ambassador between your field of expertise and the general public is one of the most skillful and rewarding things. Like when people get what's going on in their bodies and are free to ask questions, it makes what they are going through a little less threatening. In a much more positive way, I imagine science communication through scishow makes you feel similarly! #dftba

I remember being in school when I was younger and being so psyched any time a Bill Nye video came on. I was such a universal, yet unique and personal experience as a kid in science class. He took this difficult subject and made it cool and fun. Over the years going to Nerdfighter events I alway like to ask the question to the new people I meet "How did you find out about Hank and John, and What is your best memory of this community?" and at your tour this past month, the overwhelming response was "A teacher showed us Crash Course/SciShow video. I loved it, and found this awesome space on the internet. And since then, I got excited every time a vid was played in class." I'm so happy that those people found their way to this community, and maybe in some ways found a love for science and learning

@@esther5636 That's awesome! It's always so cool finding other people into sci com! I went to the University of Edinburgh - my course was quite small, but I think it's growing in popularity. Although I'm currently waiting to hear back about a job doing science workshops/shows for children, which would also be cool. I am in college at this very moment majoring in Science Education so that I can be a science communicator, and that's really because of you. Like I can point to several external factors that put me onto this path, but ultimately none of of those would even be there in the first place if not for you and your work. I would probably be just as lost as everyone else who isn't quite sure what they'd like to be doing or what their purpose is, and instead I'm lucky enough to have something to pursue that I'm not only very very passionate about, but also good at. And it's something I think I can actually contribute to. Even just by the fact that I am doing it, as a woman who's queer and hispanic and mentally ill. But even more importantly than the career aspect, science and math allow me to appreciate the world around me on a much deeper level than I otherwise would. I can't put into words how much that appreciation has contributed to my life. STEM subjects didn't come easily to me in middle school and many of my teachers were unhelpful at best, so at the time science and math felt totally inaccessible to me. I never would have learned to appreciate the world so much if it hadn't been for science communicators talking about the mechanics behind how and why it works. You opened that door. And you were not only the first one, but the best. So as you said, "to be a person who communicated science to people and who did that well, and who got people excited about it and who was able to help people realize how cool the world is- how strange it is- and to let the world be cool on its own by understanding it deeply enough to tell the story in a way that was both accurate and not convoluted"- you really really succeeded at doing that for me.

I never realized it until now, but I think Hank's work on SciShow and Crash Course is what turned me into a promoter of science communication. I've seen all too often people in science struggling to explain a concept or research they've done, and I guess seeing that and loving how Hank (and Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell) can break down concepts so seamlessly has made me strive to do the same. And the bit about communicating science through sci-fi? I live for it. I love reading the acknowledgement section of sci-fi books and seeing what real life research had to be done for a fictional world.

I love this question and answer! Years ago, I was getting frustrated with the lack of easily-digestible fisheries science available to people who can't afford $100+ journal subscriptions and haven't studied the field enough to get through even the abstract without a dictionary. I think it was 2am one night when my insomnia felt like being a jerk when I decided "I know how to make videos, and I'm pretty good at translating this stuff into English. I'm just gonna do it myself." Without even realizing it, I basically slapped SciShow's style onto fish and ran with it. I've never been great about the whole "regular schedule" thing with videos (I think I have 6 actual episodes since 2012... 👀), but I do post on Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook from dedicated accounts, and have an adorable little following on each, so that's something.

Huh. I’ve honestly never thought of “Science Communicator” as a career label. I wonder if it applies to my own career goal. In ten days I’ll be 40. A month after that, I’ll be getting my Associcate’s Degree. If I successfully transfer into the University program I want to be in, I’ll be majoring in Psychology, and minoring in Cognitive Science and Programming. I’m hoping to eventually design games that educate people about cognitive and social biases to help them make better decisions and be better people. Does that count, or is that something else?

Yes! Same! I'm not in grad school... yet... I'm finishing up my last year of undergrad in chemistry and I have decided to take a year or two off to do career exploration before going to grad school (or never going, I guess). One thing I've always considered is writing a daily/weekly blog post summarizing what I learned in class that day/week in a way that the general public could understand.
@ericarobbin6 жыл бұрын
You totally can! Whether communicating with the community/public or professionals within an academic group/setting, it takes a special skillset and passion to do it well and be effective, even though it's the same subject matter, the audience is very different. An easy way to start while attending uni is offering peer tutoring. Or you could volunteer with NGOs that focus on STEM programs that would challenge you to know your subject well enough to teach to it.
@jengreenwich61486 жыл бұрын
I volunteered with an after school program (I had to stop due to schedule conflicts with my teaching load) and then at a microbiology exhibit at a museum my last six months of grad school. It was honestly what got me through the end of school- reminded me why I love science and research. Also, the science community on twitter is pretty amazing.
@connierobinson10906 жыл бұрын
Where do I start on Twitter? I’ve done some tutoring...I’m somewhat skeptical of the “teach kids in schools!” type things for grad students because they seem to be only serving a small number of students who happen to live near the school. Volunteering at a museum honestly sounds SO cool...how did you end up with that job? I definitely relate to wanting to blog about what I’ve just learned. I know it back to front in that moment, but there’s nobody to explain it to! Haha
@jengreenwich61486 жыл бұрын
Connie Robinson I got into volunteering at the museum through twitter! And also an e-mail went out to a few listservs I’m on. Admittedly, I went to grad school in Boston, so there are a lot of opportunities for biologists. As far as starting on twitter, I joined and then at a conference I periodically checked the hashtag, which led me to more people. Following those people led me to others and at other meetings I did the same thing. I would suggest looking up people you know/respect or just searching hashtags for things you’re interested in. Admittedly, I know less about chemistry, but I’m sure it’s similar!

You know Hank, I’ve been sort of pissed at you since the 2017 VidCon Women’s panel overreaction to questions and people were completely quiet, was handled so badly, hyper P.C. Reaction to a situation that did not exist in reality. But I’ve respected your passion for science and your content, your drive, your passion, so I never unsubscribed or skipped videos. Since you ramped up to your book release and more posting on this channel, I’ve noticed a change in you, one I learned in my 20’s because mine could be cruel, as I would decimate people, make them feel stupid, weak, Small, insignificant, not a good look. This was me REACTING. I’d say 65-70% of the time it was in defense of others, and I knew my intellect was far superior, so if they wanted to treat someone as less than, I made myself believe it justified. I 100,000 x’s worse than your Reaction to the VidCon non-event drama. I learned the hard way by mistaking what someone I cared for deeply doing something she was not. She had never seen me do this. So when I fell into Reacting it was not as viscous as I could be, but it sure as hell wasn’t cute. When I saw her crying, my heart broke, but there is no taking back hurtful or demeaning words. As a Catholic Christian, I fully embrace the requirement to Forgive everyone, but no where does it say forget, because as limited, in the infancy of our evolution, or the Second Coming, we are equipped to forget trauma. I saw her once more 2 days later, I was lost for words, I minor miracle if you knew me. I tried to hug her, at first she responded, but then just fell apart, started crying, hitting me in the chest, not saying anything. That was the last time I saw her. I found out she moved a month later. Then the worst emotion possible set in, regret. Wake up call to say the least. I have conversations with myself all the time to think through roadblocks, problems, complete disasters and see past them. I realized I needed to stop Reacting. I told myself, if you’re so smart, and so faithful, how can you sink to such a low brow bullying reactions, devoid of what the other might feel. So, thanks to some Jesuit friends I tamed myself and learned to RESPOND. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t fast. I tamed my temper, looked for cathartic experiences that were just me. I found Responding not only got actual results or others to rethink their own doings or just deescalate tense situations. Don’t get me wrong, if someone truly needed to be taken down a notch, I still intervened, but in a completely different way. Plus I relearned something I did in high school worked even better as an adult, not biting the bate, smiling and saying as little as possible. Oh how it pissed off opposing soccer and football players. I know, very passive aggressive. My point is learning to Respond, I wasn’t making RIDONKULOUS assumptions anymore, I wasn’t just being a bigger bully, I was far more thoughtful. Which also annoys the hell out of ridiculous people. I have noticed in you a serenity, a wisdom, a person who, from what I have seen, ONLY Responds, which is better than I can say for myself. I’m far from perfect. This very subtle, sublime serenity is amazing. I never doubted that you were a good person, just made a few rash or ill conceived decisions. Not in a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG time. I admire and truly respect people who make themselves better versions of themselves. I’m still working on it. You Hank, I believe you have it dialed in pretty tight. A far superior growth and in far less time than my own. I don’t write this glibly or in any condescending way, or at all lightly, I am very proud of you. A far better man than I. Your book is pretty damn good as well. These Hank channel episodes really accentuate your Responding, and a Wisdom you are gaining that is better than I have achieved in so many ways. Sorry this long. I hold onto anger too long. Letting someone know how impressed I have become of them is truly cathartic!!

I am not sure about this "Mandy is a friend of mine that edits my videos" ... presumably you pay her to? "Friend of mine" is an awkward introduction of an employee.

alekmoth My guess is that they are friends first and he does pay her but Hank seems to feel awkward about being an employer sometimes. It's weird to own up to having that power and it's also counter to his image. But I'm sure it's a fair arrangement.
