Tiktok is hoping to re-educate the younger generations to only use Tiktok and have them not engage with KZbin in the first place, while KZbin feels threatened by the surge of Tiktok and as an established platform, tries to maintain the status quo by providing the features of the competitor, so there's not a need for users to engage with Tiktok. It's strange hearing that Tiktok is incentivizing longer content, since most of the complaints I ever hear regarding Tiktok was that the allowed lengths of videos was just... way too long. To be fair, the dialogue surrounding this was still more in terms of comparing it to Vine, and people at the time were largely using it sort of like a successor to Vine, at which it was failing miserably because without the shorter time limit people were dragging jokes out far beyond their entertainment value. But even now I see complaints from people because they are expecting short-form content and don't want creators to treat the app like a second version of KZbin where they can just host storytimes or vlogs. People talk about how Tiktok is rotting people's attention spans, and to an extent I'm sure it's true, but really, people were largely always unwilling to engage with longer content on Tiktok, probably for the same reason that you wouldn't go on Tumblr to see some model post photos of themselves on vacation. It's just not what you open the app for.

Nah. It makes sense. They are just moving the goalposts so they don’t have to pay creators as much. Same with demonetization based on censorship. I like the ten-minute videos when it's a slightly deeper dive into a topic or educational. I don't like the ones where it's just someone taking about their life for ten minutes. I also wish it was easier to see how long a video is upfront because there are times when I'm there for the shorter ones, and it's helpful to know what I'm in for. It's definitely contributed to my attention rotting a bit, though.

From what I've gathered about Tumblr the part that got cut was the group handling the new things like Tumblr live (which is literally blocked by everyone but the US because privacy issues) and twitterification attempts on the dash (some people dashboards were changed to look basically like Twitter on desktop which everyone hated and immediately found ways to edit the site elements to force it back into its og state) because of how poorly that went. Tumblr itself seems to be as fine as it ever was.

There are still problems with staff applying ban rules to queer content that doesn't violate their own ToS and the strong rules against anything even vaguely porn-shaped has kept a lot of artists away, but yeah: despite losing truckloads of money every year, I hope tumblr remains exactly as weird and algorithm-free as it is now.

Unfortunately on the creator side of things, the Instagram/meta experience is not great. The algorithm changes frequently and pushes ads aggressively, so it's hard to get consistent engagement. I'm an artist, and Instagram was falling behind Twitter (before Elon) because all of a sudden you'd get 12 likes on something you used to get hundreds on, and at some point it stopped showing people your posts. As a user, it's also impossible to find things on instagram -- tik tok has a great search function at least, while Instagram has been nerfing their hashtags and search function for years now. Honestly, both platforms suck for me, especially because Insta is pushing reels so much, same ragebait content and inflammatory comments... I’ve always loved how transparent both of the brothers have been financially, but Hank takes it to a whole new level with his more breakdowny, educational content. I’m sure it’s majorly helpful for small creators and it’s definitely fun for nerds!

This really solves the mystery of why I have so many shorts that feel like they are missing a bit of the end of the video-and not even the normal annoying bit of promising a part 2 that is impossible to find.

@@snoozley853 I don't think it is irrational to want to avoid yet another social media platform. I can't speak for @Leggir but for me it really is about the time that I already waste on other sites. I just don't want to give more of that to tiktok.

Still bizarre to me that people actually swipe through KZbin Shorts. I watch them from my subscriptions feed, and when I'm done with one, I go back to the subscriptions feed and choose the next one. I prefer choosable video to swipable video.

On the Instagram views thing, it would be very easy to write a script that gets the views for every video uploaded and pushes that to a database. Running that every day (or even multiple times per day) would get you a daily (or more) datapoint for every video, allowing you to then pull all data points by video. I'm a software developer myself and I've done things like this, it really is a 'weekend project' that could be super helpful to a lot of creators.

Despite my name, short content is kind of a chore for me. Especially since I'm exclusively covering content that's formatted in 16:9 and have to cram that into a vertical orientation. All of that extra work is rewarded with a fraction of the CPM and an entirely different and seemingly unpredictable algorithm dance that I still don't know how to work with. But I figure with how popular that format is, we're all going to have to get used to shilling products.

I didn’t really understand how TikTok’s product incentives are a good idea on any level. There are already so many scammy / scummy endorsements by unscrupulous content creators. Leaning into that even more sounds like a disaster from the jump.

Glad to see your reaction to Facebook is similar to mine Hank! Thanks for sharing this, as an advertiser it's very interesting. One thing that might have caused the increase in KZbin Short CPM may be seasonality, as it is peak shopping season in most of the world. It would be interesting if you did this again at the end of March for example. Congrats on the all clear as well.

I have not used TikTok at all but the marketplace seems really interesting for an illustrator like me. I could make a TikTok, maybe even several about the process of an illustration and then sell it in the TikTok marketplace, right? It would give my supporters a more personal connection and knowledge about the piece and my thoughts behind it. It’s almost the perfect counter to AI generated art prints too, since people would see proof of how it was handcrafted …
@oyahfftlisawsome Жыл бұрын
...unless you used AI to make something then you recreated it for the content and sales...
@Ruinwyn Жыл бұрын
I can see how it might appeal to actual creatives like writers, musicians and visual artist that have something of their own to sell. The problem is, of course, that uncreative people can churn out content much more selling the seaweed pills, Temu quality clothes and whatever else is available for drop shipping at click of a button. That will give TikTok shop bad reputation very fast. Non-creative can shill 10 different products a day while creative often only has a new product to shill every few weeks or months, and even shilling once a day won't be noticeable in the flood.

All i want is a way to automatically play Shorts in the regular KZbin video player! I don't think that's too much to ask!!! Actually, now that I think about it, I could probably figure out how to make a browser plugin for that.
@blaireshoe8738 Жыл бұрын
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 In browser all you have to do is replace /shorts/ in the URL with /watch/ so, yeah, should be pretty simple to set up some way to do that automatically. There's already a few chrome extensions for it, I'm sure some of them fully automate it, though I can't vouch for any of them since I just do it manually as needed. Sounds like a neat little project to figure out yourself, not sure if the mobile URLs function any differently.

Harder-to-quantify factors: I subscribed to your channel because I watched some of your shorts. I noticed that there are some other channels that use shorts this way deliberately, essentially as advertising for their normal videos.

Wait so with the seaweed pills example would the manufacturer be paying creators, or is Tiktok paying the content creator to sell just anyone else's goods? I assume you meant the latter, because otherwise the manufacturer of supplements would still be liable for what the content creators say - but then I'm not sure what Tiktok gets? Are they just going to pay creators to get people used to shopping on Tiktok? Fascinating but confusing stuff!

Kinda off topic but the headspace ad line “It is hard to be a person. We are trillions of cells all trying to work together to try and be one thing and that’s NOT EASY. It takes a lot of conscious effort to do it better one day, then the next.” really just dropping bangers like that mid ad dang 🤧
