Hey Hank! I think the specific epitoke-producing polychaete that you’re thinking about might be the Samoan palolo worm (Palola viridis). Their epitokes rise up from the seabed in October around the Pacific islands (Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu) and are collected and eaten as a delicacy. I remember reading about these in a marine biology book when I was younger and hearing about them in this video got me super excited!

A lot of times (I'm not saying this about you hank, I'm sure you don't) people forget that we are still a species on this planet. And I honestly feel the argument of humans creating this infrastructure and everything being "unnatural" is odd, because while it's weird we created infrastructure and all that stuff, if it's "unnatural" or "against evolution", how and why did we do it? Many would argue that the reason it's unnatural is because it's harming the environment. But when you really think about it, every species is a parasite to the planet they live on, they take more than they give back. And in that way, I'd say infrastructure, society, and everything along that line is natural.

Idk if I'd go as far as to say that all species are parasites of the planet (I suppose it's true in an entropic sense), but I agree about the meaninglessness of the natural/unnatural distinction. We affect the planet significantly more in degree than others, but I don't think there's necessarily a clean distinction between us and, say, beavers or termites in the "naturalness" of our impact. We are each compelled to do what we do, and building a house seems hardly different than building a beaver dam in some sense.
