You should send this to Stoke on Trent council, the place today is an absolute disgrace. Thanks for posting, grew up in the 70’s and loved every minute of it, especially Hanley.

Born late 70s and grew up in the 80s in Stoke-on-Trent. Going to Hanley a Christmas was a treat. Now it feels like being on the set of 'The Running Man'.

Hanley is miles better now than it was 10 years ago. The old bus station was a dilapidated dump for decades and while modern day Hanley is far from perfect it is still a vast improvement on what it was like in the 90s and 2000s.

What a great montage of photos from a wonderful era. No dustheads, people on the streets & vibrant. It is unrecognizable today.

Wonderful to see the old places that have gone - especially Sherwin's music store on the corner by the old market (where the Potteries Centre now stands). It had a great, and very busy, record shop in the basement, where I bought all my singles in the 1960s.

Black Horse and the Star were regular haunts in late 70s early to mid 80s when you could park bikes outside, Stars and Bars custom shop for add on bits and pieces for the Norton, Bassets for waterproofs, gloves and boots - saw numerous bands at the Victoria Hall- Sabbath, Budgie, UFO, Lizzy, Priest, Hawkwind, Motorhead ( met Lemmy, Phil and Eddie in chippy), vinyl collecting and swaps at Lotus and Chrissies records and 'work training' at Clough Street workshops (Training Opportunities Scheme) in the early 80s ... happy memories

Could "The council" have prevented the loss of 50 000 jobs in the city? NCB, Michelin, The Potts, Creda, Steel works etc? The City is deindustrialised. Hence it's demise.

@@MrGuy999guy Absolutely true. Once the industry died then so did the city and, slowly, the soul of the people too. I used to live down London Road in the 80's and it was fine - a nice mix of housing, small business and pubs with a leavening of students to keep it more lively. I used to be a regular in the Stoke Inn, regular enough to get the odd free pint when I was broke. Went back down there about ten years ago and got the shock of my life at the state of the place - you could see in the people walking about that all the hope was gone. Popped into the Stoke Inn for a drink and the place was mostly gutted, painted all black and with what seemed to be a little stage for 'exotic dancers' - drank up fast and got the hell out.
